i realize, after writing a backstory for my character that ended up being three times longer than i intended with a good amount of worldbuilding in it that probably will not fit in with the world the dm has made, that I don't care that much about actually playing dnd I just like making characters and worldbuilding.
answering this ask 1.5 years later to say me neither tbh that's why i'm a forever DM

downsides of being a lich #1214 — apparently can’t live in neighborhoods with a high concentration of fellow liches without my fucking dogs going missing all the time
downsides of being a lich #1213 — neighborhood dogs are chasing me and trying to bite the bones out of my ribcage. my minions are just laughing

(the issue in question was the fact that for a while the best way to be good at hitting people was to put points into anything but Strength* and that was. not great**)
*not actually called Strength, the stat in question is Aggression (the stats represent different approaches to combat rather than bodily status), but it's functionally like Strength in terms of bonking a mf
**also the issue didn't just apply to hitting people. literally any action you could take in combat would be improved by not building your stats around it
i'm so in love with this system i'm designing.
just fixed a major issue <3
does it still have some problems? yeah 1000% it doesn't actually have rules for settling conflicts through anything besides martial arts (i say martial arts loosely because one of the playtest characters we've made kills people by altering the ratio of a circle's radius to its circumference within a small area and collapsing your skull)

Mmm im so full of ttrpg design
this system is so goofy
character creation is an in depth process where you make custom move pools and try to optimize every last drop of the build. the ratio of time it takes to make a character sheet to the length of a combat is at least like 3:1
until a little bit ago you go through all that prep, step into the ring, and immediately lose to the best build in the game at the time, which immediately tears your throat out with no counterplay.
it obviously had to be patched but it means i’m headed in the right direction because holy shit is that hilarious to me

I have to make myself clear: the character Power “God’s Perfect Idiot” currently allows for incredibly consistent one shot kills with the help of the Move Modifier “Ultimate Move”
like. your counterplay is: “win three skill contests in a row,” “have one very specific ability,” or “beat their absurdly strong Taunt they’ve been setting up” and if you can’t do any of those things you are instantly mocked to death
i love RPG design today i got to say the phrase "God's Perfect Idiot combos too well with Ultimate Move"

hey i recently found out something, if you have a party member with a vorpal sword and you have polymorph (and are atleast level 9) you can give guaranteed crits to the party member with the vorpal sword because the young silver dragon probably wasnt made to be polymorphed into
yeah it was not made to be polymorphed into, which is why:
Tumblr media
that's right, you can't polymorph into silver dragons. it only allows transformation into beasts, not monstrosities or oozes, or, in this case, dragons. you're thinking about classic 9th level bullshit spell true polymorph, which can do pretty much anything because it's bullshit and i love it
and also, unrelated to the polymorph issue but still relevant for things like Hold Person shenanigans:
Tumblr media
vorpal sword doesn't just apply on any old critical hit, but rather only specifically on natural 20s
i'm so fucking sorry

It’s a lot more complicated than just this but here’s a preview
I’m working on a set of rules for handling unarmed pit fight style one on one brawls in 5e because the existing options suck and at some point I will post a PDF of it for anyone who’s interested in it.
It’s called No Magic No Items No Holds Barred and it turns punching a dude in the face into a combination of a strategic bluffing game and a series of skill checks with multiple levels of success and failure.

the ranger in my current game is a swarmkeeper and he's been performing excellently. the forced movement on attack is REALLY strong
hey do you know of any plant-based druid subclasses? i want to make a ranger/druid multiclass character but it wouldnt make sense for them to be able to wildshape
Well without going into the realm of homebrew you've got a few options:
Do normal wildshape but flavor your animal body as being made of moving vines and branches. This thematically works great for anything bigger than your character, as you can think of it as making like, a biological mech suit. Where it falls apart a bit is when you turn into a spider and suddenly you did not just create an animal body around yourself. Pros: lots of flexibility, can pick any druid subclass and still have it work. Cons: gets a little weird with smaller creatures
Spores druid: Your necrotic damage aura could be roots stretching from you and into enemies to sap their life. Your symbiotic entity, which is an alternate usage of wildshape and does not involve turning into an animal, now takes the form of armor made from those roots and an increased amount of THE SUCC, and any zombies you raise (if you take enough levels in druid) are connected to you by those roots. Pros: sick as hell. Cons: caters to a very specific aesthetic
Stars druid: Instead of wild shaping you can manifest a constellation to give you power, which could easily be reflavored to fit almost any character. It includes stuff like a bonus action ranged attack, boosts to healing, and improved concentration, all stuff a ranger would love to have. Pros: flexible aesthetic, good synergy with Ranger. Cons: makes you all glowy?
Wildfire druid, maybe? again, it's an alternate use of wildshape. Summons a little fire spirit that teleports around and chucks lil fireballs at people. I'd personally lean away from this one unless it REALLY suits the character, as the spirit scales based on druid level and. you're multiclassing. Pros: GREAT if you're building a pyromaniac. Cons: kinda bad
I'd personally go with Stars or Spores. Stars with the Archer constellation caters more towards a ranged playstyle , while Spores makes you more of a frontline melee dps with a solid well of temp HP.
