Birthday

This is a birthday gift for @verawhisk! Happy birthday, Vera, ILYSM and I hope this was an excellent day for you~!

"Vyrin, what the HELL is going on?!" Scully nearly screeched as he was pulled along by his lover. The damn brute was nearly ripping his arm off but he looked so happy and excited.

He had been weird the whole week; secretive and dodgy, avoiding Scully and making piss-poor excuses. It was always so easy to tell when Vyrin was lying, and Scully let him have it because he'd spit it out eventually. It was still frustrating but he figured it was a good surprise; if Vyrin had done something wrong or thought he did, he would say it right away. Better to wait that make his lover sad.

That particular afternoon, the Drow announced he was taking them somewhere and Scully followed, annoyed but acquiescent. Maybe now he'd finally know why Vyrin was being so weird. So they hopped into Vyrin's car and off they went.

They had gone to Vyrin's family's estate and pulled up to his personal manor, where Vyrin jumped out of his car and practically carried Scully out. Endearing but the fraying rope of Scully's patience was nearly snapped. "Vyrin Shadowfell, you better answer me right this insta -!"

Vyrin stopped in front of the door to his estate wing and laughed. "Alright, alright! No need to pull put the government name!" He leaned down to give Scully a sweet kiss. "Go in, alakzar."

The kiss placated him somewhat, but Scully shook his head as he stepped around Vyrin and opened the door. "This had better be good, puppy!"

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!"

A chorus of voices called out as the room was suddenly illuminated, revealing a large group of people and a sudden influx of party poppers and little noisemakers and purple and ocean themed confetti. It made his brain stop for a moment before Vyrin's arms around his waist drew him back to the present.

"Wha...what's..." He couldn't get the words out, but his brain started recognizing people.

Astarion and Halsin, Gale and Wyll, Krynne and Karlach, Shadowheart and Lae'zel, Kyran and Abdirak. His eyes even picked out Vyruna and Kryize walking in from the family room.

Scully slowly turned around to look at Vyrin, who just smiled brightly. "What did you do, Vyrin?" He asked softly, trying so hard not to cry.

The smile softened. "I hope you don't mind, but I asked my sister to do some digging. And Krynne is very good at finding out answers." Both of their eyes shift over to the Shadar-Kai, delicately holding a wine glass.

"I stopped at memorizing your social security number, but I do have your IP address." She said, her usual monotone making it more threatening than she meant it.

Scully rolled his eyes, and after giving Vyrin a quick peck, stepped forward with no small amount of trepidation. "I figured that one, you psycho!"

They all laughed and dragged him into the dining hall, where a feast of his favorite foods were laid out. He tried to argue about his diet, but everyone ignored his half-hearted protests. So he ate the meal, enjoyed the good food and the good company.

Vyrin sat next to him the whole time, kept a comforting hand on his thigh. Knew when to draw him into conversation or to distract when it became too much. Kept Scully grounded and there, and he never felt so appreciated.

The mint chocolate chip ice cream cake came out, professionally designed to be ocean themed and when handed an edible little eel hound, Scully almost felt guilty eating him.

But when time for presents came, and he was dragged to the family room, the guilt faded as he was gifted plenty of cute little sea creature toys, an ocean themed bed set, and several different tickets to the aquarium and marine rescue.

"You even got the Kraken Show?!" He exclaimed, looking at Astarion and Halsin with a broad smile. "How the hell did you do that, it costs a small fortune!"

The Spawn scoffed, leaning more into his Druid. "Sweet Scully, you really think Halsin and I are in the poor house? I'm hurt~!"

Halsin chuckled softly, giving the overly dramatic Rogue a kiss on the head. "A friend of mine is an Archdruid who heads the care programs. I asked and she provided."

"Don't say that, they really will think we're destitute!"

"Oh, my apologies, my love~!" Halsin laughed as he drew a hissy, fussy Astarion into a sweet, placating kiss.

The laugh was infectious and Scully leaned against Vyrin to giggle. He sighed happily when he felt strong arms wrap around him.

The night, unfortunately, had to come to an end, and the group of friends left slowly, hugging Scully and giving him departing birthday wishes.

Even Karlach and Abdirak left, leaving only Vyrin's family and Vyrin there. Scully felt the nerves return, always there when faced with the terrifying matriarch.

"Sean." Her deep, smooth voice said his name so delicately; like the shadows whispering your true name, beckoning him to the darkness. "Apologies that we did not bestow you a gift yet. But the day of life celebrations are usually a more private, familial affair."

She leaned down into a shadow and pulled out a white envelope. Scully had long since gotten used to the family's weird shadow magic, but it didn't stop the shiver down his spine at the sight of it, and especially at the sight of Vyruna getting up and walking towards him to present the white envelope.

"Ahhh, thank you, Lady Vyruna." He said, unable to stop the quiver in his voice. He quickly opened it to prevent any displeasure from the imposing Shadar-Kai woman, but when he slipped the packet out and started reading it, his breath caught in his throat.

His eyes studied each word carefully. He stared at it for a long time, and when he lifted his head up to look at her, they were watery with tears. "...marine science courses at BGU?" His voice quivered with so much emotion.

She nodded. "All expenses will be paid for by us, and even should not finish a degree, they should not cost a single - oh!"

All five of them were surprised when Scully suddenly popped up and hugged Vyruna, burying his face into her chest as his shoulders shook. They never expected such a sudden show of affection but the matriarch quickly recovered with a soft, loving smile as she wrapped her arms around the Human. Shadow stained fingers carefully stroked his back and his hair, and she placed a cool kiss on his head.

Vyrin immediately popped up as well, wrapping his arms around his lover and his mother, with Kryize quickly following next then the twins. The older Drow man placed a sweet kiss to his wife's cheek and the couple held their children.

It was a long moment filled with soft sniffles from Vyrin and muffled hiccuped sobs from Scully before he started to pull back and lean against the younger Drow. He stared up at Vyruna and Kryize, feeling his heart stutter at the Proud Parent looks in their eyes.

"Th-thank you both...thank you so," A sniffle. "So much."

Kryize smiled and gently put a hand on Scully's cheek. "Do not worry about finishing the course. Do not worry about getting a degree." His deep voice rumbled through his hand and he felt calmed by it. "You are there to gain knowledge and joy, not prestige. It is all we ask of you."

Scully nodded. "Y-yessir..." He murmured wetly.

The Sailor smiled and placed a sweet kiss to his forehead. Vyruna did the same, before Krynne and Kyran reached over to hug him. They all left without saying a word, leaving Scully and Vyrin alone.

As soon as they left, Scully whipped around to Vyrin. "You did not put them up to this, did you?!" He hissed through an ugly sob, demanding to know.

Immediately, Vyrin scooped Scully up and kissed him, not minding the excessive wetness of his tears.

"No, not at all." He breathed softly. "Their gift is their own, just like mine is."

Scully sniffled before cocking his head to the side. "Your gift?"

The Paladin nodded before pulling out a purple velvet box from his shadow. He held it out to Scully to look at. "I...thought long and hard about what to get you, Sean, and I think I finally found something you may like." He gestured for Scully to open it, and with a shaking hand, he did.

Opening the box revealed a thin, decorative chain of silver, hanging to about the sternum. The pendant itself was made of Abalone shell. The dragon was long and coiling, a sea dragon with its shark-head open in a menacing expression. It's eyes were made of red coral, and along it's body were inlays of larimar, serpentine and stone of courage. It shimmered in the light, and touching it, the pendant felt cool and slightly damp and Scully could hear the distant sounds of waves. He felt safe and protected by the sea's embrace, far from Umberlee's eyes.

He turned to Vyrin, who was simply smiling at him. "Th...this is..." He had no words for the artistry of this necklace. "Why?"

The Drow's smile deepened. "It's...really simple." He leaned in close to take the necklace, carefully putting it on the Human. Once done, he gave Scully a sweet, chaste kiss, but one that held the entire depth of his love for the Human. "I love you, Sean Scullion."

And that was the answer. Truly...truly a simple answer for a simple man.

Scully took it in for a moment, the full force of Vyrin's love, before he returned the soft smile. He gave Vyrin another kiss before burying himself into the Drow's arm.

They cuddle for a long time, basking in their love and each other's presence. "Was this a good birthday, Scully?" Vyrin asked softly, needing to make sure.

Scully laughed, running his hand across the pendant again. "It was the best birthday ever."
