what i feel happened to supernatural is it went on for too long, and because of the already fairly repetitive nature of the show, they had to keep upping the ante for finales until it became utterly ridiculous. i feel like, once you do this big lucifer vs michael vs team free will battle, its really hard to one-up that. so of course you end up fighting god even though literally how are you going to kill god.
