He could make out the rectangular block of the kitchen cupboards. Memories flooded through him, an exhaled breath misting the vision. Vic dicing vegetables efficiently on color-coded chopping boards, elbows tucked in, dishing out life lessons determinedly; mother-hen. She’d always had his back in that world he’d lost.

He scanned the ground, picked up a chunk of brick, looked for the sharp edge. A final scan of the gardens to left and right and then he hurled it with as much force as he could muster.

It bounced, of course it did.

‘Just-world hypothesis’ that if you’re good the world is going to give good back to you… no, it doesn’t work like that, Aaron, you can be good and bad things happen, and the opposite. The world isn’t a fair place.’

Aaron was watching his mouth as he spoke, a slight shake of his head as he answered:

'You can't believe that.'

'Can't I?'

'Well you were never good anyway.'

And then he saw the mischevious glint in Aaron's eyes. The moment of despair he'd allowed himself receded and he huffed out a laugh. Unexpectedly Aaron reached out and held his wrist, his face angling forward.

The kiss, when it happened, was the sweetest reward the universe could deliver him.
