there’s a difference between “being canceled” and “facing consequences” but there’s also a fine line between “facing consequences” and “deincentivizing growth and change” and i think that needs to be grappled with more. i’m not saying all mistakes need to be forgiven by everyone, but people who make mistakes are people, and if it becomes clear that not only will they will never be forgiven for their past, but that they will also be continually punished, then it’s a normal human response to grow frustrated and stop trying, and the holier-than-thou response of “well if they were really sorry, they would willingly accept all the punishments we throw their way” is stupid. what does pulling receipts up from 20 years ago do? who do these “gotcha” moments help?

Especially when you have to learn a whole new set of rules for reading and the way words work.” He watched her for a moment before unfolding his hands and resting one halfway between them, to the side of Artemis’ papers. A wordless invitation and question, Victor offering her gentle affection as she perused her paperwork. 

“Well if you ever need transportation or help, don’t be afraid to ask. I wouldn’t mind having someone drive you if you need.” Propping his chin up on his other hand, Victor smiled at her, his expression utterly relaxed and his attention fully upon her. “A little bit of a commute is rough but if its a better quality of education, I can understand the reason for it. If I remember correctly, didn’t you also want to travel abroad at some point? Any particular places you have your eye on?”
