I like them but now I’m curious, why do you dislike them?
basically it’s a whole host of problems that boil down to 1. it’s a poorly designed, customer-hostile product and 2. the drink tastes wrong
like:
laggy touchscreen
more unsanitary than a classic soda fountain
also unintuitive to people over a certain age
slows down decisionmaking, whereas pushing a lever with a cup is a one-step process
laggy button
if you want your cup full to the brim…good luck
you’re either going to overflow it or spend an unreasonably long time short-pressing the button
meanwhile classic levers are basically 1:1
only one spout
on a classic soda fountain, multiple people can fill up at once if they want different drinks
this is even worse on behind-the-counter freestyle machines, which in most incarnations still only have one spout!
this has a high potential for cross-contamination, since all drinks come through the same thing. sucks for you if you’re allergic to vanilla, or if you want a drink that tastes 100% like it’s supposed to
if one spout has a problem on a traditional fountain, it’s fine. you can just not get the fanta. if one spout goes out on a freestyle machine…tough luck
choice paralysis
you ever spend hours in increasing frustration not watching a movie on netflix because there’s too many options and the good ones are lost amidst a sea of mediocre ones?
that, but with weird soda flavors
costs more for the operator, short-term and long-term
you’re probably unwittingly paying for this price hike in the cost of yr meal
tastes wrong
“hundreds of flavors” means nothing if you can’t get the basics right. freestyle coke does not taste like coke.
like, this is subjective, but I can at least rule out “oh, you must have had a bad machine” because I live in atlanta, where they make coke. we got the freestyle machines early, and we’ve got a lot of them.
and contrary to the “bad machine” narrative, freestyle coke tastes consistent! it just tastes absolutely nothing like the can/bottle/fountain variety. sugary carbonated water with an unidentifiable and poorly integrated additional flavor.
coke built its brand on one specific taste. the last time they tried to change it in the modern era is infamous, but for some reason this time nobody cares
I have had to switch to dr. pepper at fast food outlets specifically because it tastes the Least Worst of the caffeinated freestyle varieties
in general I just feel like the benefits don’t outweigh the costs. (especially since I don’t personally care about the novelty of grape sprite.)
