As if to reinforce how few fucks it gives, Israel carpet bombed Rafah yesterday (on the same day there was an ICJ hearing about its ongoing genocide). Today it broke that its relentless bombardments has demolished a mosque in Rafah—not a new move for Israel, as it has already destroyed several mosques in Gaza. And this isn’t even part of the ground offensive Israel intends to embark on in Rafah, fully unstopped because anyone who has the power to stop them doesn’t give a fuck for Arab lives. We are watching the erasure of Palestine in real time, from its sacred sites to its people themselves.

Not people saying “Fandom has always been like this” in that vent post I made. No. It hasn’t always been like this. Fandom has NEVER been like this until recently and if you were in fandom pre-tumblr purge, pre-twitter, pre-netflix boom, pre-tiktok….then you would fucking know it was nothing like this.

We still had the drive to create. We still sold prints and charms and made zines…but it was never like this.

The introduction of streaming, binge shows that drop all at once, tiktok and vine RIP i still love u vine but you were the beginning of a particularly ugly era) creating this bite sized, quick paced ‘content’ era of creation and it bled out into fucking everything else.

Fandoms didn’t die down when the show ended or the season was over. You didn’t mass unfollow artist, writers or moots just because they changed fandoms. There wasn’t this need to please the algorithm in order for your posts to get seen by people and enjoyed.

Fandoms used to last YEARS. Star Trek is literally the oldest running fandom out there and you got people in there that could care less about the new stuff and still have been happily prancing through their fucking fifty year old fandom today. Hell, even SPN after all it’s fuckups and shitshows has a dedicated fanbase STILL creating tons of art and fic.

There is no patience anymore. No calm feeling of taking in fandom and friends at a pace that which doesn’t make you stressed and is still fun.

Do I blame fandom for this? Of course not, but people are complacent with it and start changing their vocab to accommodate and end up making the situation so deep it cant be fixed.

We call Art & Fic Content now, completely stripping the value of what it is to a level of consumerism instead of personal entertainment & community bonding.

Forever thinking about that moment in which I was watching dps with my parents and couldn't stop sobbing after neil's death, distraught that they'd given him no other choice. And my parents looked at me concerned and said "of course he had other options. he could've ran away. he could've defied them" and I was shaking my head desperately like no, no, no, you don't understand, you don't understand that he was given direct orders and he could not for the life of him disobey them once they'd been set in stone before his eyes. when those who made the laws looked at him and prohibited him from continuing with the one thing he loved. because he absolutely could not fathom the idea of directly disobeying them, but also couldn't live without the one thing that made him feel at home. and he couldn't leave them. he needed to be a good son, he desperately needed to be good, and his parents were the law, the one thing he could never defy because it just wasn't an option, it wasn't a possibility that could ever cross his mind. and when he was told by his dad that he'd never be an actor, he saw that path being severed, like a limb, incapable of being brought back because it didn't occur to him that it was an option. and when he saw the only path left to follow—to never act, to never be himself again—he couldn't bear it. willfully going against his parents wishes was unthinkable, horrifying in his mind. living without theater? that was just as horrifying. and no, it wasn't more. if the balance had been tilted just a bit, he would've chosen differently. those two were just as unbearable to him. two hells, identical in their horror. and his parents were the ones putting him through both of them, telling him to voluntarily step into a hell and endure life with grief and horror of tremendous dimensions. like asking him to get in the water when he could see that the water was on fire. and since it was a demand....he couldn't disobey, not unless he wasn't there anymore to take their punishment.
