Eukaryotes control the switch between the glycolysis and gluconeogenesis
Author: Bharathi Kavindi Jayaratne Gluconeogenesis and glycolysis are fundamental metabolic pathways for eucaryotic cells. Glycolysis involves converting glucose into pyruvate and similarly, gluconeogenesis is converting pyruvate into glucose. In eukaryotes, glycolysis and gluconeogenesis do not occur at the same time because one process is inactivated while the other process is…

Interbreeding due to exposure of different wavelengths
The movie annihilation, was one of the most beautiful yet terrifying movies I’ve watched. It focused on some out of the box ideas on the effects of mutated genes, refraction, gene cloning. As a person in science many things that happened in the movie got me thinking, some scenes were triggering and unpleasant to look at but looking back every scene had its own purpose and unique idea/background…

Five Tips to cope with off days
5 tips to Cope with off days Personally, as a uni student my mental health is not always great so do I do a few things to cope with these issues. I have many off-days where I feel like completely useless, dumb and annoyed with myself and others for no reason. When I have these days I don’t work at all, I tend to do things that will get me off my usual routine. 1) Find your comfort…

Tips and advice on Note Taking
It took me a while to figure out what works for me, and I'm still experimenting. Note taking can be fun but it can be time consuming and takes a lot of effort and motivation to do. Here are my little tips on tackling that.
1) Keep one book for all your modules
- So you don't have to carry five-six books at once
- Divide the book into equal sections (for each module)
- On the first page of each section write all the assignment and exams for that module as a self-reminder < So every time you open the book you know you shouldn't be procrastinating :) > (of course if you don't open the book this isn't an issue but that's not why we here)
- Keep a general section where you write extra information that relates to the subjects (e.g. extra seminars, extra activity sessions, groups project notes, your own research for subjects, assignment preparation etc. )
2) ONE lecture = ONE page
Sometimes, this might not be possible because Uni likes to give us 90-100 powerpoint slides. So in that case it's okay to have an extra page or two ( I will post how to break down long lectures like this), condensing such lectures can be tricky cause there's so much content but DON'T PANIC ... do what works for you at your own pace!!! <3
- Personally, having like five pages for one lecture can be overwhelming so I tend to cut down my notes one page for lecture.
- Condense the lecture slide into one or two sentences
- Draw a separate box on the page for extra information (either given by the lecturer or researched yourself)
- Any diagrams or tables given, either copy then into a digital note taking place (personal favourite Notion) or put them in a note-card or sticky note
- Staple extra note-card or sticky note on to that page so it doesn't get mixed up with the other lectures.
3) Colour code
I'm a sucker for colours, so I need colour if I'm going to revise. So I make my notes as colourful as I can.
- Have a colour theme (preferably for each module) - e.g. purple, yellow and green for Human pathology and pink, yellow and light blue for Human anatomy. (This low-key tricks your brain into associating that information with that colour , so it becomes easier to recall information)
- Only highlight most important information (sadly... this doesn't mean the whole lecture )
- Important information can be definitions, examples, equations, comparisons, research areas.
- Separate box to keep extra information given or needs to be researched (Highlight the box not the information in it )
4) Draw illustrations
I personally can't stare at a page without pictures, especially when I'm trying to revise. So I tend to add little drawings on to the page, it's not always annotated diagrams but small illustrations relevant to the lecture
- Overall diagram or drawing (e.g. lecture on the heart = anatomical heart)
- Pick an area or subheading and draw something that reminds you of it (it doesn't have to be scientific - make your notes fun)
- Relate the annotated diagrams to the lecture (leave space for the drawing and the annotations)
5) Summarise -> flashcards
More condensed version of the lecture, based on the information on the page (Do not go back to the powerpoint slides). Then condensing the summary further into a flashcard. This personally helps me to understand the content better and keep it in my memory for longer. It's also easier when revising for exams.
- One to two paragraphs from the lecture notes summarising the whole page
- Pick out key information. e.g. Main purpose, definitions, examples.
- Link the content, subheadings, form your own connections
- condense the paragraphs even further only picking out information you MUST remember and put it on a flashcard
- Write at least 4-5 sentences or key words on the flashcard (that summarise what was covered in the lecture)
Thank you so much ya'll for reading this, I hope this was helpful for you and make sure to tell me your thoughts and feelings.
Till next time lovelies x

Productivity and minimalism
Seeing something like this literally brings me joy
Having your own space to study, do something productive makes you motivated to do it.
For me being minimal is hard, i'm not gonna lie im quite the hoarder. So its hard for me to get rid of things to be a minimalist, so this year I decided to recycle my old note books and instead of buying new ones, keep all my notes in one book so I don't have to carry 10 books to uni, have a designated area to keep all my non-essentials out of sight. By doing this I was able to be more efficient with my work, I got things done faster cause I didn't have to look through 5 books to find the information I wanted.
Having a minimal work space also helped me to feel more relaxed while working, cause usually I get so stressed looking at all the things lying around in my desk, this usually slows me down and unmotivated me.
So I totally recommend having a minimal work space to help you become more productive and motivated, with that being said here are few things I learned this summer:
- Being minimal don't necessarily mean getting rid of things, I am a minimalist in my own way, everybody is different so you do you!!!
- Being productive doesn't mean doing academic work, it can just be cleaning your room or going for a walk (even if the walk lasted 5 minutes)
- Its necessary to take a long break from your usual life to recharge
- Your mental health, your freedom, feelings are priority don't let other people tell you otherwise. Putting your needs first does not mean you're being selfish
Bonus tip - From now on there are no zero days, this means you doing something productive everyday, whether it's talking your self out of the house, putting your dirty laundry away or even getting out of the bed. This will help to have a sense of acaivmlenet in the little things you do on the day so every day is a productive day.
Credits to canva for allowing me to make this cause this is my favourite thing now. https://www.canva.com

Depression tips:
- if you can’t clean all your bedsheets, instead clean or change your pillowcase so that your skin doesn’t suffer.
- if you can’t do dishes, scrape and rinse them as you use them so they don’t get gross while waiting for you to have the energy. Alternatively, buy napkins.
- if you can’t do readings for class, download your local library app - most of them will have a wide selection of audiobooks available including many of your required readings.
- keep a lip balm next to your bed, another on your desk, and a small one in your most used bag or jacket. Harder to lose stuff if there’s multiples that each have one place.
- get a weekly medication box, or better, get one of the ones with a lid that has a timer.
- you probably have a sad tired comfort outfit that’s socially acceptable to wear outside but doesn’t stress you out to wear, buy doubles or even triples of the items in that outfit.
- go stand outside once a day, even if it’s just for 20 seconds to grab your mail or something. Go see daylight.

This also work great for me ! !
A studying tip that probably won’t work for everyone but does work for me: I tend to do better with setting a goal of working until I get something done than working for a certain amount of time. If I say “I’ll study for an hour”, I usually end up doing other things for at least part of it to make the time go by faster, where if I say “I’m going to finish two pages of practice questions”, then that’s it. Even if I get distracted, I still have to finish those two pages of practice questions before I can move on. Idk, just a thing I’ve noticed about myself.

5 tips to Cope with off days
Personally, as a uni student my mental health is not always great so do I do a few things to cope with these issues.
I have many off-days where I feel like completely useless, dumb and annoyed with myself and others for no reason.
When I have these days I don't work at all, I tend to do things that will get me off my usual routine.
1) Find your comfort song/playlist
- when I want to have an emotional moment and deal with the feeling I'm having I always listen my comfort playlists -
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6GbUcz3idTAiYKXmTpiK2U?si=ae8d34f54b614382) <- this is my BTS playlist so it might not be for all of you but give it a try if you like, the songs themselves are so calming
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/27XGQDPfeJ5sJMoJjDS7PY <- my other playlist, I cannot get enough of Sia's snowman
- listen to your playlist as long as you need, have a rest, take a nap while you're listening to it
2) Watch an episode or two from your favourite show or binge it entirely
- It's honestly okay to do this once in a while we all need a break without feeling guilty (so It's okay to binge that kdrama)
- You don't realise how much you need this until you actually do it
- You sometimes need to get away from the academic side of your life and focus on the creative side
3) Get dressed up like you're going to a fancy party
- Go all out, it doesn't matter if your earrings are bigger than your head and your clothes are brighter than the sun, this is about YOU; do what makes you happy
4) Go for a walk or get out of the house to run a small errand
- I know this can be tricky when you're having a bit of an off day, but after getting dolled up and looking like whole princess I always feel motivated to go out
- Go for a walk in your local park
- If you don't feel like walking just sit there and take in the breeze and the scenery (This is what I always do and it NEVER fails me)
5) Make a memory!
- When you're in the moment you don't realise how precious it is until its a memory so make as many memories as possible to remind yourself of that tiny precious moment you had three years ago
- Take a picture of that fancy outfit you're wearing today
- Film a video of the sky, the park, or even you
- Even if you couldn't get yourself out of the house, IT'S FINEEE ..... but don't let that eyeshadow go to waste take a great selfie or two or maybe hundreds of them
Bonus tip - Hype yourself up, ALWAYS and EVERYDAY cause who else is going to do it for you

They say to tune in your frequency cause you attract your own vibe. Well to do that you first got to know how you vibin' and that's shadow work. Study yourself, try to understand where you are right now in your life, start pinpointing what makes you react in a bad way, think about why. You are not the things you dont like about yourself. You are not anger. You are not sadness. Those things are there but they're not you. They wouldn't make you so sad if they were.
So do shadow work. Get to know the real you. And the moment you clean yourself of the spiritual mud on your soul, you'll fall in love with your true self.
Thank god we're not all this anger and imperfection. Inside us there's something untouched by that. Something ever clean that only wishes love and justice. Tune in with that. That's god. That's you.
