‘Then Morgoth hurled aloft Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld, and swung it down like a bolt of thunder. But Fingolfin sprang aside, and Grond rent a mighty pit in the earth, whence smoke and fire darted. Many times Morgoth essayed to smite him, and each time Fingolfin leaped away, as a lightning shoots from under a dark cloud…’ - Of the Ruin of Beleriand, The Silmarillion

JRR Tolkien: mount doom
Mount doom, also known as Amon Amarth and Orodruin, was called mount doom by the enemies of Sauron because the word doom doesn't represent an absolute end but looming fate and being that it was ground zero of the ring being forged there in Sammath Naur it was the mountain of the doom (or fate) of all middle earth representing to the end of all beauty and freedom of all arda or the redemption of Saurons treachery and Isildur's failure and temptation of power.
He knew. It was adequately named. Consider what you're reading.
