First of all... dont come at me with the “But Azriel’s shadows danced with Gwyn but they disappear when he’s with Elain” bullshit because let me tell you something:

HIS SHADOWS DO NOT LIKE THE LIGHT.

THEY DONT LIKE SUNLIGHT.

THEY TEND TO DISSAPEAR WHEN IS BRIGHT DAY.

Az said, his shadows lingering in the archway, as if fearful of the bright sunlight in the ring.

A shadow curled around Azriel’s neck, the only one brave enough to face the sunlight.

Because his shadows were born in the dark, in that dark cell when he was a kid.

Born in a lightless, airless prison meant to break him. Instead, he had learned its language.

In the centuries I’d known him, he’d said little about his life, those years in his father’s keep, locked in darkness. Perhaps the shadowsinger gift had come to him then, perhaps he’d taught himself the language of shadow and wind and stone.

But what was it one thing that he desperately needed when he was in that cell? More than his mother? More than a friend?

LIGHT

And who is always described as the sun? As the day? Who’s always described as full of light?

ELAIN

Why do his shadows disappear when he’s with Elain?

Because she’s the light he needs the most.

Because his shadows are not needed.

He doesn’t need to hide from her.

He doesn’t need his shadows to help him get through her company. To protect himself.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing on that face, on his scent. The shadows, whatever the hell they were, hid too well.

The shadows gathered around his shoulders, like they were indeed whispering to him, shielding him, perhaps.

And don’t get it twisted... his shadows might take some time off when he’s in her company but they are always ready to throw hands to protect Elain.

They’re always ready to strike, ready to help him protect her.

Nesta saw the blow land, like a physical impact, in Elain’s face, her posture. No one spoke, though shadows gathered in the corners of the room, like snakes preparing to strike.

And this scene here makes me think she used Azriel’s shadows. There’s no more explanation.

Elain stepped out of a shadow behind him, and rammed Truth-Teller to the hilt through the back of the king’s neck as she snarled in his ear, “Don’t you touch my sister.”

Why Elain’s actions are always compared to Azriel or his shadows? Unless...... unless she might have her own and this is all foreshadowing.

“Don’t,” Elain said flatly, starting once more into a walk, veils of steam drifting past her shoulders from the roasted rosemary potatoes in her hands, as if they were Azriel’s shadows. “She won’t listen.”

And why Azriel’s shadows always try to hide his emotions when Elain’s is brought up?

“You and Nesta are wanted down there.” “Because of the shit with Elain?”

Azriel stilled. “What happened to Elain?”

Cassian waved a hand. “A fight with Nesta. Don’t bring it up,” he warned when Azriel’s eyes darkened.

Cassian blew out a breath. “I take that as a no regarding the meeting topic, then.”

“It’s about what I discovered. Rhys said he requires you both there.”

“It’s bad, then.” Cassian surveyed the shadows gathered around Az.

“You all right?” His brother nodded. “Fine.” But shadows still swarmed him. Cassian knew it was a lie, but didn’t push it. Az would speak when he was ready, and Cassian would have better success convincing a mountain to move than getting Az to open up.

Not you all out there trying to convice yourself and others that these two are not endgame.

Things from the SJM online event

Sarah started the book years ago

When she was writing ACOTAR Sarah realised that there was more to Nesta than just the “bitchy older sister”

ACOWAR was meant to be the end of the series, but Sarah wanted to explore Nessian more and she wrote aorund 200 pages and couldn’t get it out of her head and drunkenly pitched it and they went for it 

Sarah didn’t want her to be the perfect loveable sister, she wanted her to have baggage to then explore how she can grow as a person and heal 

Each of her characters get a part of her, but she thinks Nesta got the biggest chunk out of all of them, she got a lot deeper into the head of Nesta compared to any other character

She loves writing about the IC as a group and as individuals and loves writing about their histories together 

There were lots more parts of the ACOTAR world she wanted to write, including different characters and different courts 

Even though she loves Rhys, she sort of loved writing Nesta’s hatred towards him, she liked showing his actions through someone else’s eyes who isn’t going to swoon over him 

She was going to have Rhys and Feyre perspectives throughout the book but because they were in 1st person not 3rd so it was confusing to read. But also her editor said it was a distraction from Nesta’s story

The friendship between Gwyn and Emerie is one of her favourite friendships she’s written in all of her books 

Their friendship was also just as important as the relationship she had with Cassian

Sarah’s best friend was lot of the inspiration for the friendship between Nesta, Gwyn and Emerie

She doesn’t think Nesta’s story is complete, and she could’ve written another 1000 pages on Nesta just doing stuff. She will also have a major role to play in the future 

She was with a physical trainer (pre-covid) and she asked him to give her some basics on how to use and train with swords and so she drew from a lot of that for the scenes where Nesta is training 

Ever since release day she’s been trying not to think of any of her family reading this book because of the “steamy parts” 

Before the book came out she would explain that ACOSF is in the vein of ACOMAF, in so much they’re both healing stories in their own way 

The House of Wind came from her middle school days where she wanted Cher’s house from Clueless and took inspiration, and that she wanted a house that could cater to her every need and that’s where she got the ideas for the House of Wind from 

She loved the idea of Nesta connecting with something that isn’t actually alive, but making that connection nonetheless and knowing she isn’t alone

She wants someone to make art of Nesta’s black dress because she loves it. She was partly inspired by the Black Swan for that dress. 

The whole scene of her wearing that dress was her coming into control of herself again

Tchaikovsky does inspire some of the book, various movie scores

Stay Together for the Kids by Blink 182 actually helped her get into the head of Nesta- that song gave her the inspiration of how Nesta felt about her dad and family 

Sarah has to write at home because she get’s so into her scenes and characters she needs the privacy. But now shes a mum, she kind of writes wherever she can

She thinks Clare from Outlander would get along with Feyre and Nesta to some extent, and wonders what it would be like if Clare and Jamie fell through into the ACOTAR world 😂

She’s currently in edits on the second Crescent City book, and rivals ACOSF for sex scenes and steamy moments

She knows who’s story she wants to write for the next ACOTAR book, but doesn’t want to give anything away just yet

Your top 10 books?

Ohhhhh I love and hate these questions because they are hard to answer but I love them because I love books and could talk about them for HOURS.

The top ones that come to mind (and I am going to bunch series in as one book sorryyyyy!)

The Infernal Devices.    Don’t ask why, I don’t particularly mind CC but I really didn’t bond over TMI but something about the time in my life when I read TID just hit me, captivated me in a way that reminds me of why I love reading.

From Blood and Ashes     LISTEN Anything JLA sign me the fuck up. Sexy light aliens, we got em. Greek Mythology badassery, got a series for that. Demons, Gargoyles and drama, CHECK. (also a super sexy spin of with said Gargoyles which I have never read such a interesting idea of using them as shifters!She even does a wicked thriller. Honestly even her romances are good, BUT FBAA just excelled, her writing, the characters, the twist *kisses fingers* tres magnificccccc

A Court of Thorns and Roses (well the series. obviously I dedicate a big amount of time to them.) & by proxy TOG and CC but that’s obvious.

AngelFall by Susan Ee    It is so slept on in my opinion. Such dark nitty gritty books, awesome characters especially the lead, she is just so tough and resourceful. + Evil Angels??? AMAZING. Swords that have souls, epic! All of it.

Bloodlines by Richelle Mead  Yeah, you have to read VA first but oh my god it is worth it, I avoided it for so long because I didn’t like Sydney but FUCK i was wrong. Her and Adrian are amazing, watching them grow and evolve was spectacular and to this day these books are such comfort reads.

Six of Hearts by LH Cosway    Phenomenal Circus/performer vibes, all of them, each book and couple was more and more beautiful.  (Bonus Circus Vibes with Amour Amour by Krista Ritchie)

 Grave Mercy   Assassin badassery, very dark gritty books in my opinion as it goes on, there is also a spin-off series too I believe. Just read it.

All For The Game  I have no words. Dark, questionable, fucking phenomenal. It is M/M though so if that isn’t your speed, maybe don’t? IDK its just a romance to me. WELL KINDA.

Demons at Deadnight      SO FUCKING UNDERRATED. I have never laughed so much through a YA. She has got to be the most relatable funny protagonist I have read, honestly, from her first line in the book. Great series if you love big group things and demons of course.

The Winners Curse  !!!!!!!!!!!! let me TELL YOU. You might be getting the impression a like darker books and I do, this is no exception, we deal with some pretty important topics, and you really get to see both sides, you sympathize with both and thats so important. Even though she isn’t right and has been raised with her ways and privileged you also understand her. ALSO THE TWISTS MY GOD The second books destroyed me. Now I want to re-read it!
