Propaganda
Marpessa Dawn (Black Orpheus)—She's like. fairy tale princess etheral pretty. truly eurydice realness. AND she's a singer AND she's a dancer. she used to be a governess/nightclub dancer, which isn't hot per say i just thought it was an interesting job combination. If you want to hear her sing just look up the Black Orpheus soundtrack
Irene Papas (Tribute to a Bad Man, Electra, Zorba the Greek)—"From the opening shot of Michael Cacoyannis's Electra, as the proud, implacable face emerges from encroaching shadows, it becomes impossible to imagine anyone else as Euripides's heroine. Erect, immutably dignified, dark eyes burning fiercely beneath heavy black brows, Irene Papas visibly embodies the sublimity of classical Greece, tragic yet serene." -Philip Kemp (film critic) Also she's a a badass.
This is round 4 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Marpessa Dawn:
Tumblr media
Marpessa Dawn was an filipina/african american who became well known as an actress, singer and dancer in France. She is most famous for her role in 'Black Orpheus' in which she played Eurydice. It's difficult to find a picture where she and her husband, the actor Eric Vander, aren't kissing or hugging or laughing together, they are incredibly cute (and hot).
Tumblr media
basically everyone and their mother will agree that marpessa dawn was one of THEE og vintage black women working in cinema (even if it was mostly in french cinema! the cross language barrier slay). mostly did her work in french cinema, and her smile in black orpheus is literally like the sun breaking over the sea

Irene Papas:
Tumblr media
An amazing actress and singer, some may say a literal Greek goddess. Fought against military dictatorship in her home country and had an affair with Marlon Brando.
Tumblr media
She literally played Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world in Greek mythology, what more could you want

IMPERIAL CAPTAIN - "Step towards the block when we call your name. One at a time!"
RALOF (BLOND BRAID GUY) - The bulky man sighs. "Empire loves their damn *lists*."
RHETORIC [Easy: Success] - Everything's ideological with him.
LOGIC [Medium: Success] - And what's wrong with lists? Lists are *organized*.
SOLDIER WITH THE LIST - "Ulfric Stormcloak, Jarl of Windhelm."
INTERFACING [Medium: Success] - He crosses the name off, like it's already done.
ULFRIC STORMCLOAK - The gagged man walks silently past the soldier.
RALOF (BLOND BRAID GUY) - "It has been an honour, Jarl Ulfric."
ESPRIT DE CORPS [Trivial: Success] - The loyalty this man commands is beyond his title.
SOLDIER WITH THE LIST - "Ralof of Riverwood."
RALOF (BLOND BRAID GUY) - Ralof of Riverwood follows his *true High King* to the middle of the town square.
REACTION SPEED [Medium: Success] - Hold on, what was that look between Ralof and the soldier? Do they know each other?
SOLDIER WITH THE LIST - "Lokir of Rorikstead."
LOKIR, THE HORSE THIEF - "No! I'm not a rebel! You can't *do* this!"
COMPOSURE [Easy: Success] - He's gonna--
LOKIR, THE HORSE THIEF - Before anyone can react, the horse thief has run past the captain and the soldier with the list and is heading left, up the road.
SAVOIR FAIRE [Medium: Success] - He's off balance--it's hard to run with your hands tied.
IMPERIAL CAPTAIN - "HALT!"
LOKIR, THE HORSE THIEF - "You're not gonna kill me!"
IMPERIAL CAPTAIN - "Archers!"
VISUAL CALCULUS [Easy: Success] - You can see the arc of the first arrow almost before it's fired. The path starts at the curved edge of the bow and ends in the back of the fleeing man's leg.
LOKIR, THE HORSE THIEF - As the man is struck, his momentum takes him forward and then over. His head collides with the ground. Two more arrows follow, piercing his crumpled body. Lokir of Rorikstead bleeds out on the ground.
IMPERIAL CAPTAIN - "Anyone else feel like running?"
SHIVERS [Easy: Success] - In the northwest, a small farming village. The wind rolls down the valley and sweeps through the grassy plain. No one is waiting for him.
ANCIENT REPTILIAN BRAIN - There is nothing. Only warm, primordial blackness. You don't have to do anything anymore.
LIMBIC SYSTEM - But what's this? An awareness creeps up on you. A jumping, juddering sensation forces your head up and your eyes open.
LOGIC [Easy: Success] - You are moving. On a cart of some kind.
INTERFACING [Trivial: Success] - Your hands are bound. This is a *problem*. With your magic digits out of action, you're helpless!
RALOF (BLOND BRAID GUY) - There is a blond man with a braid in his hair sitting across from you. He tries to get your attention: “Hey you! You're finally awake.”
CONCEPTUALIZATION [Medium: Success] - He has piercing blue eyes. Oceanic.
RALOF (BLOND BRAID GUY) - “You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush. Same as us, and that thief over there.”
LOKIR, THE HORSE THIEF - He gestures towards the meek looking man next to him.
ENCYCLOPEDIA [Challenging: Success] - Imperial. Of the Empire. What Empire? *The* Empire. The great Empire of Men, centred at the Imperial City, in the Imperial Province of Cyrodiil. These guys used to rule the world.
AUTHORITY [Challenging: Failure] - Clearly they still do.
LOKIR, THE HORSE THIEF - “Damn you Stormcloaks! Skyrim was fine until you came along!”
EMPATHY [Easy: Success] - His sudden anger is a thin disguise for terrible, terrible fear.
LOKIR, THE HORSE THIEF - “Empire was nice and lazy. If they hadn’t been looking for you, I could’ve stolen that horse and been half way to Hammerfell.” He turns to you. “You there. You and me—we shouldn't be here. It’s these Stormcloaks the Empire wants.”
ENCYCLOPEDIA [Formidable: Failure] - Stormcloaks?
CONCEPTUALIZATION [Easy: Success] - Cool name.
RALOF (BLOND BRAID GUY) - “We’re all brothers and sisters in binds now, thief.”
RHETORIC [Medium: Success] - Brothers and sisters? Like he wouldn't trample over the lot of you for a chance to get out of here.
IMPERIAL SOLDIER - The cart driver speaks up: “Shut up back there!”
PERCEPTION (HEARING) [Easy: Success] - Silence.
PERCEPTION (SIGHT) [Medium: Success] - You watch the snowflakes dance in the air.
SHIVERS [Easy: Success] - This land is cold. Bitterly cold.

Are you still doing requests for domestic scenes? (If not, that's all good and hope you have a good day!) If so, how about a very old Ashlander grandmother braiding her great grandchild's hair, while teaching them the history of their people through song
Tumblr media
this is such a sweet one :3
Ty for making a request!

the linked article doesn't say anything about this depiction
it's a piece of graffiti (indeed from around 200 AD) on the Palatine Hill in Rome. Wikipedia only says it's the earliest depiction of the crucifixion
the writing is in Greek, it says:
ΑΛΕΞΑΜΕΝΟϹ ϹΕΒΕΤΕ ΘΕΟΝ
"Alexamenos worships his god" (presumably that's Alex over on the left)
[Greek speakers may note the spelling mistake, σέβετε instead of σέβεται, which is a mistake that someone could make today if their spelling was just a little worse than mine]

The earliest depiction of Jesus, engraved by someone mocking their friend for believing in him, giving him a donkey head ~200AD
