the “adhd medication is good for your brain if you have adhd but damages your brain if you don’t have adhd” claim seems poorly substantiated, as does the claim that stimulants always make adhd people calm and non-adhd people energized (sure, sometimes that happens, but this doesn’t account for dosage, severity of symptoms, the inattentive subtype, people taking it for both adhd and narcolepsy, etc). i’ve seen people claim that non-adhd people shouldn’t take it because it actually decreases their performance, while others claim that non-adhd people shouldn’t take it because it gives them an unfair advantage, which makes the messaging really confusing.
the most compelling explanation i’ve found so far is that at a low dosages it improves most people’s focus and executive function, but also has side-effects like putting too much time into useless tasks or thinking one’s work is better than it actually is. so if your focus and executive function are already good enough, the cons outweigh the benefits, whereas someone who already isn’t getting anything done will more likely see positive results. i get that people respond to substances differently but i much prefer cost-benefit analysis to framing it like there are exactly two types of brains.

saw some autism educational website say that when autistic people have meltdowns they can't help it but when people with bpd do the same thing they can just decide to stop at any moment. emotional dysregulation is the core feature, that is by definition not how it works at all...

people will acknowledge bpd has a lot of behavioural overlap with cptsd or autism but still insist that when people with bpd do the same things it's for secret evil reasons

abuse
my dad gave a very honest "he was a difficult man" eulogy for his father, which i thought was a bit odd but just interpreted as my dad not understanding social cues, but the last few days he's been telling my mom a lot of disturbing things that happened. i thought my grandfather was just the usual level of abusive for a man of his generation but apparently it was beyond that. i am sad for my dad and my grandma.

no one cried at my paternal grandfather's funeral and my grandmother was extremely proud of this. wasp culture is very strange.

my other grandpa just died of a pulmonary embolism. i was worried about my mom but she says she's relieved he didn't suffer (my grandmother had an awful prolonged death) and she seems exhausted but ok. i just talked to him on the phone a couple weeks ago because i misread a text and thought it was his birthday. he sounded fine and he laughed about me mixing up the dates.

my mom was telling me i should date the anglican minister woman who did my grandfather's funeral and when i told my mom the minister is married she said "to a man or a woman?" and i said "to a man" and she said "it won't last."

i have one (1) source on this and it is my father so big grain of salt but we were talking about how older generations typically have larger social networks than younger people (at least in a face-to-face context) and he really shut down the notion that this was primarily caused by the internet, because when he was growing up in the 60s and 70s it was already happening.
