#40: Chaos Witch Quelaag

What a terrible faith.

This blogpost comes in 2 parts:

Part 1: Every soul has it’s dark

I wanted to check that I spelled Quelaag correctly, it turns out that I accidentally spelled ‘Quellag’ so I’m glad I did.

When I did I found the wiki page for Quelaag and then I immediately remembered the saddest story every told and cried.

I think one of the things that makes me tear up so much about the Daughter of Chaos story is that it’s right there in front of you but also it isn’t. In order to even see the Daughter of Chaos you need to find or have known about a secret phantom wall, but once you’re there, in what is an extremely helpful area of the game, you find another fire-keeper, and they’re also mute.

So initially you think ‘...’ cause you don’t think of anything, you just sort of take it for granted.

But if you picked the starting gift of the Old Witch’s Ring, an otherwise useless item, and equip it, you hear a story of complete and utter agony, a body kept barely alive by spider magic and the love she holds for the sister you murdered. And that’s happening the whole time you’re there, unperceived to you without the ring.

And it’s important to mention, the voice acting here really sells it, the quivering lilting voice of the Fair Lady is pretty good, it’s pretty great, it’s pretty sad, and that’s great that it manages to do that.

Part 2: flood emoji

Literally Sfar and Kborg and I spent over an hour trying to choose a picture to draw. What a stupid dumb thing, Kborg kept trying to pick obscure youtubers to draw, Sfar kept being too shy to make any suggestions, I don’t remember every suggestion but I remember being very upset that Sfar never saw Star Wars and didn’t know who Darth Vader was.

It’s ridiculous to think we chose to draw Chaos Witch Quelaag considering Sfar also never played Dark Souls.

You might have noticed that my painting is rather pixelated, this wasn’t an artistic choice, I was unhappy with my progress so I started the painting over with 5 minutes left, and I was so frustrated with spending an hour picking a thing to draw that all the paintings were done with like 20 minutes total time.

The Daughter of Chaos story makes me cry because it’s sad; these mspaintings make me cry cause they remind me of a bad time I had.

It sucks that this was the last mspaint Sfar ever drew, it’s even sadder thinking that this was also one of the last conversation Sfar and I ever had and that I haven’t spoken to him in years.

In conclusion: Sadge.

#39: Link, the Dog

And Sfar the human the fun will never end it’s mspaint time!

This might be a controversial opinion, but I actually think dogs are pretty cute. They’re, if I dare say it, sweet.

Because of this, I think it makes sense that these paintings are easily in the S tier of mspaintings. The dog pictures are cute, you know?

The trick with dogs is that they’re basically just big piles of hair, and so like with drawing hair, drawing dogs is all about layers.

You gotta use the transparent brushes, the mspaint brushes were basically designed to draw hair and/or dogs, they blend really well.

To be clear, I don’t wanna pretend like I ascended to another level with this mspaint session, in truth I literally started this whole portrait over, 30 minutes in I realized my pic was too flat and I erased everything. Thankfully this time it turned out pretty swell and spicy/glittery this time.

I’ve never met Sfar’s dog in person but I’ve been to Sfar’s house and his couch is very comfortable so rest assured that Link will rest enamoured.

#38: Mmon

I was at university and I had an hour between lectures, again. Now that I think about it I’m not sure if I the Notch story I told about borrowing a mouse was probably actually about this portrait, it would explain the high quality.

By high quality, I mean I’m pretty happy with the skillful mouse movements and nice colours I used in this mspaint achievment, the actual picture itself is actually very low-quality and compressed since this is a copy since I lost the original.

Speaking of low-quality, this portrait was actually made in competition with Sfar, but he was so embarrassed with his submission that he closed mspaint.exe without saving. All his efforts lost, like tears in rain.

I haven’t spoken to Mmon in years and you know, it really do be that way...

#37: Doctor Otto Octavius

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this mspaint session, it’s that even if you can do something, it doesn’t mean you should.

For example, if you want to create mechanical limbs with an in-built artificial intelligence in order to control a fusion reactor, perhaps maybe you shouldn’t do that and should instead focus on making the fusion reactor easier to use.

Or for another example, if you want to draw Doc Ock, and decide to draw him as geometrically and colourly accurate to the poster as possible, you could instead focus on making the drawing nice and fun to look at.

F’s in chat for Kborg’s sister, Aborg, who didn’t manage to finish the portrait in time, it happens to the best of us.

This is Reno’s first appearance in the mspaint arena, but if i remember correctly he did draw a bunch of anime in mspaint on his own time, still, it’s an impressive contribution, very bouncy.

I remember when I was in secondary school I knew this one guy who’s parents were British i think and he was really haughty and pretentious and a bit chubby and also he had a bowl haircut so my brother called him Doctor Octopus and to be honest I’ve never heard a more accurate nickname in my entire life.

I’m a huge fan of Doctor Octopus on paper, he’s a tragic character, although his Spider-man 2 iteration wasn’t one of my favourites. I really reccomend the ps4 game for an enjoyable rendition, additionally the Superior Spider-man (2013) series of comics is an extremely good romp, some good stuff, let me just say. Also offtopic but I highly reccomend the Liturgy album H.A.Q.Q, it’s an incredible metal album which manages to come off as haunting and also very rapacious.

Wouldn’t it be cool if Doc Ock shot lasers out of his robot hands like pew pew snake robot.

#36: Luke

This is the third and final in the series of friend portraits where one of the people drawing is doing a self portrait.

I’m a big fan of Luke as a person because one time he phoned me on my birthday and I wasn’t expecting it and it made my day, or actually I think it was the day after my birthday but my point is I heavily appreciated it.

He doesn’t actually have a face tattoo in real life, I’m not sure if his signature placement was aspirational, but if so I’m sure he would make it work.

#35: Spider-man (Venom Suit)

Did you guys know Spider-man lives in New York? 

The rock he’s squatting on in these paintings is probably situated in New York when you think about it.

I remember once as a young lad I was at a Christmas party and one of my aunt’s on my dad’s side of the family was talking to me and asked about the notebook I was drawing in and I was all excited about it and showed them my notebook. I don’t really remember if it was spider-man I was drawing but I think it was, I showed it to her and she said the chain I drew a character swinging from was bad and that I should research what chains look like and learn a bunch about chains if I wanted to draw chains. In that moment my aunt planted the seed of self-doubt and resentment into a child’s mind, causing them to stop drawing for fun for years and years.

If you’re an older relative of a child who likes to draw please don’t do this, instead tell them that their drawings are great, because they are. If you’re a child who likes to draw, your drawings are great.

Anyway, I think I drew Spider-Man’s glutes pretty well, I think they’re pretty well highlighted, I’m a big big fan of this mspaint painting.

I think Kborg and Csub (who by the way this is their final entry in the mspaint canon, say goodbye everyone!) did a pretty valiant effort with such a complex subject, and so did I, I did a great job!

If you’ve never heard of Spider-man, he’s basically a man who got bit by a spider, and now he can jump good. If you’ve never heard of this character I recommend reading the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series from the year 2000, it’s a pretty good introduction to the character and it’s very breezy. One of my favourite things about comics as a medium is how breezy they are, and Ultimate Spider-Man uses that breezyness to deliver a very well-defined torso of a series.

#34: Kborg

The bird has come to roost. Kborg is that bird.

A funny thing happened during the making of these pictures, I actually already chronicled those events in a video I made here’s the video skip to 3:30:

I don’t really have much to say about Kborg, I don’t really talk to him much on account of well anyway it’s not really relevant at any rate I think I did a pretty good job on this painting. He had nice pajamas they were fun to draw. Also he’s kind of doing a pogchamp face, don’t you think?

As mentioned in the video technically speaking Annie didn’t use mspaint making this particular competition a sham, but to be honest I think she was holding to the spirit of things so it’s hard for me to totally forsake her.

#33: New York Central Park

I don’t have a lot of parks around where I live, or any greenery, there’s a children’s playground nearby but that doesn’t fulfill my lizard brain need for seeing the colour green.

Anyway my favourite of these pictures is Csub’s, since I really appreciate the contrast between the droll cityscape and the ebullient, very eye-catching and pretty splodges of color the park provides.

In contrast Kborg draws the park as a disorderly miasma, flanked on all sides by an industrial deluge, the only solace in the painting is the 3 blue buildings in the corner, the only solace in a dying world.

Did you notice I used the paint speech bubbles to make the trees? I think that came out pretty nice, although i feel like the park is way oversaturated compared to the cityscape, whilst simulatneously being a lot more visually messy. It sort of makes the paining hard to look at. Also, not sure why I thought to add pink sprongs as stand ins for the people at the last minute. I don’t think I captured their essence, instead, I created a human fungus.

#32: Jester

Jester is a card from the board game Dominion expansion Cornucopia.

Technically this is a first for the ms paint series since it’s the first time I’m drawing something which is already a painting, which makes this a meta-painting.

You know I can’t stand the whole ‘dude but what if bro what if we just think we’re in the real world but really bro we’re all just in the insane asylum bro, you know?’ sort of conversational idea since it’s all about an unfalsifiable claim. Like if we’re in the matrix, insane or if god exists, at the end of the day there’s no way of knowing and so it makes no difference one way or the other, you know?

Anyway the jester card in Dominion is pretty powerful, but it’s also an attack card which makes it mostly notable for being annoying. But really it’s mostly mostly notable for being a very powerful attack card which scales exponentially well with the player count. Since if you’re with 4 players that’s an upper bound of 3 really powerful cards you’ve just added to your deck and that your opponent can’t use next turn. Plus all the curses and junk cards.

It’s just really defeating to run up against it, since it discards the cards you would need to stand up against it. I can see a world were a guy rages out and goes full joker mode because they had to play a game with this card in it.

#31: Pretty Castle (Real)

Avid readers might have noticed a glaring irregularity in this particular mspainting set.

To set the scene, I was seating in an office chair, my computer monitors vivid with color as my cursor danced from each end of the screen, I was even recording the painting process to make a timelapse out of it.

I was in a voice chat with Kborg and Sfar, and all of a sudden, 50 minutes into the painting process, my audio cuts.

My brand new used audio interface was giving me connection problems all day, so this wasn’t a surprise, nevertheless it was unwelcome so I reached to fix the usb connection and

When people build sandcastles, they go into that experience, more or less knowing that they’re either gonna leave the beach or the waves are gonna eventually wash over it, there’s like, an understanding of impermanence.

In this case, I had all of one second to come to terms with the fact I would never see what I thought of as my best mspainting to date ever again.

Well to be fair not really, in reality I was in denial and I took until I realized that I hadn’t saved and that all of the recording footage was corrupted for me to actually have my stomach eat my heart.

Anyway, that audio interface was wack, this wasn’t even the first time it bluescreened my pc, it would do that if you plugged and unplugged it too many times in a row, but you sort of needed to replug it all the time since the connection was so flimsy, I ended up using actual rubber bands to hold the cable in an angle it would work in. It ended up bricking completely a month later.

If I remember correctly Sfar’s castle looks so different from Kborg’s since he didn’t have enough time to draw the whole thing in an hour, I’m pretty sure even Kborg’s is missing a few spires. Castles are pretty intricate to draw, it turns out.

It’s sad to think I’ve already mostly forgotten what the castle I drew looks like, only faint simulacrums remain, the details washed away, like sand in the sea.

#30: Quentin Tarantino

You might’ve noticed that Emul and Kborg made their tarantino hold a fetid leg and a jelly donut respectively. I think in the original it was a burger since to find the picture i googled ‘Quentin Tarantino eating spaghetti’ and a picture of him eating a burger showed up.

Remember the part in Reservoir Dogs where they sitting in the diner?  I wonder if they were eating burgers or donuts or feet or spaghetti in that scene...

I’m pretty sure I was distracted when I was drawing this portrait, shaken and stirred, and I think it’s safe to say the erratic, near-cubist nature of my portrait stems from that.

A lot of people talk about Quentin Tarantino’s very noticeable very distracting foot fetish, and I guess I was wondering what the inclusion of feet in Tarantino films can say and add to those movies.

I guess the main thing they do is distract, they break immersion, you become acutely aware that you are watching a movie. Which I guess you could say brings about a sort of campy, self-aware aspect but none of Tarantino’s movies really utilize that vibe, so it just comes off as indulgent.

You know, I’m not that good at watching movies, usually I’ll decide to watch them at the worst of times, like around exam season, and then if I even do watch them most likely I’ll pause them around half way and probably never return to them for years. Like I paused Goodfellas halfway through in 2017 and finished it in 2019, I still haven’t made it halfway through Inglorious Basterds.

In a lot of ways I wonder if movies as a method of conveying film are outdated, like, maybe expecting people to sit quietly for 3+ hours with maybe 1 pee break is just a dumb way of conveying art to people.

Probably my favorite Tarantino film is Pulp Fiction, it’s got a lot of atmosphere, but also I’m pretty fond of Django Unchained, I liked the part with the Australians, that was pretty funny.

#29: Montana Landscape painting

This is without a doubt the best mspainting I’ve done, or at least, it’s by far the one I most enjoy looking at.

The colours are very pretty. Shoutout to the country of Montana for having pretty mountains!

This is the first landscape painting being used for an mspain, so far all we’d had were pictures of dude’s face, to be honest I’m astounded I didn’t think of doing something like this earlier on. It was way more fun, a really good change of pace.

Also this is the first appearance of the artist henceforth known as Csub, Csub’s fallen for one of the classic blunders: not knowing you can zoom out on mspaint; despite this I think they did a pretty good job, it looks like something I’d want on my carpet, you know what I mean?

I’ve gotten pretty sidetracked in writing this description because I keep looking at the pretty painting colors, they’re pretty mesmerizing, if I can toot my own horn.

It’s times like this I can empathize with geologists.
