Hi, so you may not remember this but I have a question. and forgive me if you've answered this question before. Was this meant to be Cessily, or was it Loa? Because i realized before that you've talked about wanting Cessily and Laurie to work out their issues, but I assumed that was just because Cessily was jealous of Laurie due to Kevin's feelings for her, but now that I'm looking at this, did something happen between them? If so I'm very curious what it was, also about the detail of her being immune to Laurie's powers.
That was Cessily. Her unique physiology made her immune to certain powers, Laurie's among them.
We were suggesting that Xavier's paired them due to that immunity. But Laurie was so closed off, Cessily felt neglected and mistrusted and switched rooms.
We had wanted to explore that dynamic more - explore what happened, have the Kevin situation play out, and then let the two of them (Laurie and Cessily) work it out and get past the roommate issue and the Kevin issue.

Hi! Hey guys. Hope all is well! I was re-reading some Academy-X books & I got to wondering about the powers/levels & if any specific thought went into them. Like why was Josh an Omega vs. Julian. (Specifically b/c you've said he had potential for Phoenix host in David's dream sequence.) Or TK vs. aerokenisis vs. electrokinesis in an all out sparring match who would win. Or, just any background or errata you remember about the X-Kids and their powers. Thanks! Still love the X-kids 20 years later!
We got permission to label Josh as an Omega level mutant. We never got that permission with Julian. And by the time we put the Phoenix visual reference in, that was our way of potentially nudging him up to that status as well.
We did not stay long enough to follow up and make that reference to Julian being Omega officially part of the story.
Had we stayed, we would have asked to put that in. We wanted that for Julian.
As to the other questions, can you be specific? Who are you asking about in terms of 'who would win'? Happy to map our thoughts on specific pairings.
In general, Julian's TK had greater combat potential than Sofia's aerokinesis, but primarily on the basis of control. Julian had fine control over his TK, and this gave him a more versatile approach in combat. Sofia's winds can hit hard, but it's a full wind, without fine control. She was working on control (the jenga tower scene) but to have control, she had to sacrifice raw power.
In terms of background and errata, is there anyone specific you want to know about?

One of the most deserved Emmy wins in history was Andre Braugher for his work as Det. Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street. (That show alone is worth signing up for Peacock to watch.) He also won for his work on the mini-series Theif, and was nominated for his more recent, and also excellent work as Captain Holt on Brooklyn 99 (two iconic cops, two iconic shows, and that’s only skimming his career!). We lost a legend.
Since Homicide is an older show (and was not available on streaming for way too long), here’s a taste of his work on one of the best cop shows ever:

Sorry if this sounds creepy, but how would Wallflower's pheromone powers interact with sexuality? Can she force someone who isn't normally attracted to women to be attracted to her? And how long would samples of her pheromones (say, her sweat) carry an effect outside her body? If she releases enough pheromones, would she be able to obscure other scents in the vicinity for characters with enhanced senses of smell? For an extremely dystopian use of her power, can she in fact bottle and sell her "body essence" and get people addicted to the emotions that her scents would inspire? For example, making a depressed person feel happy, or making an asexual person feel attraction for the first time?
To be honest, we haven't thought that part through completely. On a first glance, I (Nunzio) think her ability would force someone not attracted to women to be attracted to her. I think hormones would override sexuality, though it would be harder than it is to simply force someone who IS attracted to women but just not to her.
Could her pheromones obscure other scents? Unlikely, but they might distract someone enough to not notice them, which is pretty close.
Bottling her essence? Never thought of that. Kind of a cool way to go, though...

What are/were your thoughts on Brian's relationship with Quentin in House of M? I know you for a time planned for Brian to have been in love with Julian, does Brian's potential queerness factor into his relationship with Quentin in the House of M AU at all? personally it absolutely came off that way to me.
It was always potential queerness for us back in the day - one way we had of looking at the character and how focused he was on Julian.
If we were writing it today, we'd likely have committed to it, and likely (as a result) written it a bit differently.
When we did House of M, we thought that Brian needed someone to focus on, someone to support in his search for acceptance and importance. So we had him focus that attention and energy on Quentin instead.
So if we saw it as attraction in a romantic way with Julian, then absolutely it would have been romantic with Quentin.
And if we were writing today, that would definitely be true.

this interview with andre braugher has lived in my head rent free since i first read it - that concept of "army emotions" helped me understand a bunch of things. what a tremendous talent and a great loss.

Andre Braugher is dead.
When I moved to LA to go to film school, the experience was (while not soul crushing) not the most encouraging. And I started to wonder if I really wanted to pursue writing.
And then came HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET. And Andre Braugher's so-good-you-couldn't-believe-it-was-physically-possible performance as Frank Pembleton. It blew me away. Every week.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was so good, I knew I had to write, just for the chance to one day put words in his mouth.
He was great in everything I saw him in after that, but when he turned up in BROOKLYN 99, it was another revelation.
His Raymond Holt was so funny, I was reduced to tears. Every week.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two fictional policemen, two radically different tones, two performances that could be linked in their similarities and taught in acting classes for their differences.
There was NO ONE like Andre Braugher. He was, to my thinking, the finest actor I've ever seen.
I do not know if we will ever see his equal.
Funny thing is, when I watched Homicide in grad school, it was with two of my best friends, a married couple. And they watched Brooklyn 99 with their kids, decades later. So Andre Braugher has had a different importance to them - one primal and generational.
Sadly, I never did get to put words in his mouth. And I'm sad about that. But it is nothing compared to the loss the world has suffered, as he will never play another role again.
Rest in Peace, Andre Braugher. You gave me so much, and I wish I could have let you know that.
- Nunzio

Hello, thanks for answering my questions :D I've been a fan of the Academy X characters and I wish that Marvel would use them more. Your run was the one that made me start reading X-men comics in the first place.
By the way did you read the Marvel voices Pride issue of this year? Specter made an appearance and his powers were used in the first time. Was it how you imagined his powers would work?
We did not read that - we haven't read any Marvel in a while. From what we saw in bio pages for him, his powers look a little different than what we envisioned, but seem pretty cool, so they work for us.
We'll have to look his appearance in the Pride issue up. Thanks for letting us know.

Could Kevin/Wither use his powers constructively? For example, can he make a mound of nutritious compost? And although the move to Krakoa is a recent development, could he serve as a one-man fertilizer factory for a self-sustaining island nation?
He absolutely was going to go that way if we went forward on the book. Not the compost idea, but we love that one!
We thought of him targeting specific cells instead of killing any cells he touched. So that, when he gained control, he could eradicate cancerous cells, or parasitic organisms... basically he could help in lots of ways.
But the ones you mentioned give even more ways for him to turn his curse into a gift, which was absolutely where we wanted to go with him.

Because I am DYING to know…
What is Hellion’s star sign? (I’m guessing Aries ♈️…?)
We never put his birthday down in our notes. But we often picked birthdays for characters for one of two reasons - one, to link them up with real world birthdays of people we thought of when writing them; two, to link them with personality traits and that usually led to star signs.
So while we have no notes on the subject, we think you're right, and he's probably an Aries.

Brian's death makes me so sad, because he was a minor character throughout the main book and didn't have much development, but in the Hellions mini and in House of M it seemed like you guys were really setting him up to have some serious depth.
Personally I really like the contrast in when Julian is his best friend vs when Quentin is in House of M. You can see in both examples that he attaches himself to his friends very easily and would do anything for them. I remember you saying in a post that he sort of forms his personality after his friends and doesn't know who he is outside of that (which, mood, as someone with BPD) and I can really see that both of these things. He kind of tags along (no pun intended) with whoever is his best friend and does whatever they do, and supports them however they need. With Julian that meant being his right hand man, and his agent in the Hellions mini, and with Quentin that meant sticking up for him when people were rude to him, assuring him that he had friends.
I really love Brian and I really wish he had gotten to be developed more as a character, I think his story would have been something I really related to. <3
It made us sad too. A lot of the deaths hit us hard, almost as a personal loss. But his was more of a regret. We hadn't gotten to do much with him, and just when we started exploring him in the Hellions mini (and hinting at other versions of him in House of M), our time with him was done, and it became clear no one else wanted to do much with him and that potential would go to waste.
We think people got lost in his powers - didn't know how to make them work (as writers) or what to think of them (as fans). And that was on us - we went weird and obscure when devising them. Still, we liked them.
As we've said before, the downside of work for hire is that when you leave the characters, they're not yours anymore. They're in someone else's hands. So you make your peace with it. We're glad he came back, though. Hope he stays that way.

Hi! What did you both think of the latest 'Dreadwolf' teaser? I'm excited!
It was a nice little tease... not enough to draw real conclusions, but enough to get us excited! Looking forward to it and hoping it's coming soon.

This is, without a doubt, one of my (Nunzio’s) favorite movies of all time.
And Jean Arthur is one of my favorite movie stars of all time (as is Cary Grant, but a lot of people say that about him)
Tumblr media
Today I watched “Talk of the Town” (1942) suspense/Romance/Comedy
Really great! The movie was hella suspenseful, very funny and I had no idea who Nora was gonna end up with in the end. I still kinda don’t know lol.
Liked the themes of mob mentality and corporate crimes. Very topical despite being 80 years old. The message of how to practice law was good to. All about balance and case by case basis. All these early 40’s movies I’ve been seeing lately are way more topical and less bigoted than I expected them to be. Im sure I’ll run into a product of its time eventually but all the ones I’ve seen so far for this blog are pretty good.
I actually remember the names of the main characters, probably because they are so weird, like, Lightcap?? Leopold Dilg??? I laughed whenever Nora got frantic and would yell their names.
Also the part where “it’s not your egg day!!!” Got me so good 🤣
Highly recommend 9/10

Vaea is exactly the sort of pain in the ass Fenris deserves to challenge his bullshit.
Between this and the way he immediately reverts to being a typical dog person around Autumn I don't think his attitude will come out of this one unscathed.
