❛ Watercolors ❞
Hello sweetie… (Okay, that sounds too much River) So, I talked lately about me doing watercolors. It's a bit weird because I normally don't like to add color to my sketches, but it was in fact, very fun! I know that it is not really in the topic of books and reading, but art is art, don't you think so? Here it comes, my first watercolor ever, done with the help of a video made by The Frugal Crafter on youtube, go see her channel, she's pretty amazing. :D
Tumblr media
And the second one (yeah, two watercolors in two days!), is about two hyacinth macaws (actually, the color more plea than I thought so…). Here it is :
Tumblr media
This one was done by myself, but I had a picture to help me. Going back to books : Currently finish The Shining, I have to find the time and to be mentally prepared. I red like three pages from The Book Thief because I was not well sleeping last night. Silly me, I cannot begin a book when I have so much to read! So these critics are coming soon, I might also ad some more posts on movies. But like someone would say…
Spoilers!

❛ Color & books ❞
Hello again! I am actually doing watercolors (I'm so bad at this, it's actually my first time and it looks like cotton candy and mud), and I have to wait some time to have it dry. The Book Thief looks at me with puppy eyes at the moment. But I have to finish The Shining to make a new critic for this blog and to have time to cool down before bedtime. Yeah, I'm the kind of nightmares-crazy-girl. But The Book Thief is really tempting. Tomorrow. After I finish it, I have to see the movie. Sophie Nélisse is actually a girl from Quebec - just like me - and I know her for some local television series and the movie Monsieur Lazhar. Weeeeell, when I will know more about the book and the movie, I will do a post on it here. So The Shining and The Book Thief are coming! :D Happy last days of vacation and of course, good reading!

❝ What book to give at Christmas? ❜
Tumblr media
WHY GIVE A BOOK AT CHRISTMAS? For a lot of simple reasons! ❄ They are easy to wrap up. ❄ They are easy to find, you don't need to go kill yourself in a mall. Privilege the small libraries that you will find on the corner of your street, you could find good prices! ❄ You can buy them second-handed, it is ecological and gives the book a second life! ❄ You can help local writers, if you buy one of them book. ❄ It is more original than to give money, the person will know that you know her well! ❄ There are books for all the passions and all the people. If you find the right one. Even for those who do not read! ❄ You can give the chance for someone to experience reading! ❄ If you don't have any gifts to give this year, or you want to make order in your shelfs, you can always donate your books to the poor. It is Christmas for them too! ❄ Simply to see the smile on the faces! WHAT BOOK TO GIVE AT CHRISTMAS? The question may be easy to ask, but not so easy to answer. Here are some tips for those you want to buy books for Christmas. ❄ Always go with the person's passions. You don't have to buy a fiction book : A biography, a magazine, a documentary book, a book to learn how to draw, a diary, everything is good and fine! ❄ Do not forget the person's age. You will not buy an essay on physics for a 8 years-old. But you know the person : A child's book may be interesting for a grown-up, and vice-versa. ❄ Imagine yourself at that age, what did you liked? You can get a lot of inspiration by the books you own. ❄ Does the person likes reading or not? If she have not read a book in her life, do not give a 600-pages in tiny calligraphy. The person will not be interested in the book and she will disinterest from reading. But do not forget that there is not a book that is too little! ❄ Ask the person what kind of book or what she likes in life. Subtily, of course! She may give you some clues. Do not forget to go see her bookcase, she may already have the book you want to give! ❄ A baby is born? What a great chance to give him the very first book of his life! Books helps the baby's development a lot more than toys or electronic games. Of course, you can give books that are toys at the same time : For example, a book that goes in the bath! ❄ Your beloved one receives his book : He already have it or do not like it. You can return it to the store, or give it to the poor. Go back to the book shop with that person and offer to buy the book she will choose! This Christmas, gives the gift of books! Merry Christmas to all!

❝ Da Vinci Code ❜
Tumblr media
By Dan Brown On Mars 18th, 2003 United States Fiction - Thriller 571 pages Everyone know about the mystery behind the Da Vinci Code. Robert Langdon, a teacher, is summoned to the Louvre when a body is discovered. It is Jacques Saunière, who, all over the museum, and all over the world, hid codes. Codes who will reveal christianity's biggest secret, or destroy the world we know. Once again, Dan Brown takes us to elucidate the big mystery, behind what seems "real facts". I have a great time reading about the book, but the doubt persists. What part of it is true, and what part of it is pure fiction? If we are always searching for manipulation and lies, we are somehow looking to find out that everything that we knew was false. The first page of the book tells us everything is true, but after researches, historians and others seems to agree that all the facts are not exactly the same as they appear in the book. But let's not go there - this subject is debated all over the world for now a decade. We can surely affirm that Brown did his research, and have a talent for mystery and world-wide machinations. FAVORITE CHARACTER : I must say that, even if the plot is greatly done, the characters are not as great. Robert Langdon appears to me as a pale man who is doing his little own thing. And when a mystery appears, hop hop, he uses his mind and everything is solved. If I would choose a favorite character, it has to be Sir Leigh. Funny, old, he has all his life seek the Holy Graal. And I like him very much because of something I can't say here, because it would be spoiling those you have not red the book. RATING : 7/10 - The Da Vinci Code is a good book to read for relaxing. It is not big literature, but has a complex story who will overtake your mind for a while. The book is easy to read and to understand, but like I said, some characters are in lack of development and I still do not like the pretension to say that everything in the book is true : This could mislead a lot of people just to do marketing. WHEN TO READ? I would say that the Da Vinci Code is a good book for the go. I like to read it when I want to relax, but to have a good plot at the same time. You have no problem to enjoy the book, as you always try to make your own deductions. RECOMMENDATION : Just have one thing to say : Read it in one time! Not in one day or something, but do not wait weeks to finish a chapters because you will soon loose the track and you will not enjoy it. THE MOVIE : The movie is greatly done, I love particularly the scene where Sir Leigh explains everything about the Holy Graal to Sophie Neveu. But, like almost all movies, it miss a great part of the explanations and mystery, so read the book to have it fully explained! Have a good time!

❝ Carrie ❜
Tumblr media
By Stephen King On April 5, 1974 United States Fiction - Horror 290 pages For a girl who have period for the first time, at 16, under the school shower, it is most evidently that she will be picked up by her classmates. Of course, everyone laugh about Carrie White. Having a mother who is obsessed with christianity and who is clearly afraid of her does not help. But Carrie is special. She can move objects with her mind. She can destroy the world with one thought. But when a boy invites her to the prom, she sees a hope to become a normal girl. But will she ever escape the cruelty of her enemies? Carrie is one of the most appreciated horror story. Stephen King can always bring you chills. And it is not a ghost that hides behind you and screams « boo » when the light closes. His kind of horror is always psychological and more scary than anything else. If it took me a while to began reading this book, once I began, I just could not put it away. It was a day of the week, it was 22 o'clock, and I said to myself « Just one more chapter ». Then, when I finished the book, some ours after in the middle of the night, I realized there was no chapters. The story is marvelously told, if I am not a fan of journal articles and other's telling put everywhere in the book, it has not disturb me. Unlike it, I always wanted to know what would happen next. FAVORITE CHARACTER : Tough question. I feel that in Carrie, everyone has something very bad hidden inside. Stephen King is the king to make character scary and "bad". Somehow, I like the reaction of Dejardins, who wants to help Carrie even if it means to be fire. She is one of the only character in the book that is not fully interested whit herself. RATING : 8/10 - Carrie is surely on of horror's classic. But everything in the book happens so quickly, I would love to have Carrie's character more developed (to see more of her childhood for example), because a big part of the book is concentrated on the prom. WHEN TO READ? When I read Stephen King, I always take precautions. If I read always at night, it is always if there is someone in the house. This may sound childish, but truly, I would not dare walk around the house just after reading Carrie or another King's horror story. Of course, for those who like it more scary, there is nothing like reading it alone in one corner of an empty house… Brrr. RECOMMENDATION : If you want to read a horror story, this is one good book to begin with. If you don't like blood, and disgusting things, I can assure you that in Carrie, mostly of the horror is psychological. Look out for the prom night, it is terrible but not very disgusting, or bloody like some horror stories may be. You are more afraid of the characters than the events themselves. I hope you get some chills!

❝ The Hound of the Baskervilles ❜
A SHERLOCK HOLMES STORY
Tumblr media
By Sir Arthur Conan Doyle In 1902 England Detective Fiction 159 pages Everyone knows about the curse on the Baskevilles. And that it stroke again, because poor Sir Charles is dead, while walking near his domain. Of course, it is a great case for the great Sherlock Holmes and his companion, Doctor John Watson, who travel to the English Dartmoor to seek the truth behind family secrets, manipulated men and deadly landscape. But quickly, they discover that the murderer might be a big dog. Are the Baskervilles really cursed? Yes, but maybe not the way you think they are. What if they found the hound… Or the hound find them first? « Mr. Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound! » Like always, sir Arthur Conan Doyle successfully transport us to the world of misty tales of murders and detectives. For the moment, The Hound of Baskervilles is my favorite Sherlock Holmes novel, as for many of his fans. Our imagination take us quickly on the gloomy moor, as we search for an enormous killing beast. Suspense are at the maximum, but it is always with cold blood that the detective will do his investigation. In this book, everyone seems to have secrets, and it is with great pleasure of detective literature that we want to make our own deductions - with of course, are often false. Even if you know the conclusion, The Hound of Baskervilles can be re-readen all the times you want, for you will always see new things that you never discovered before. For mystery fans, it is, and it will always be, a great classic. FAVORITE CHARACTER : I have a tendancy for companions. Doctor John Watson will always be the essence of Holmes. Their couple is nothing more than the greatest friendship of all times, as Watson can bring qualities to his misanthrope acolyte. He is just the best. RATING : 9/10 - The Hound of Baskervilles is easy to read, no problem to pass trough in few days or even hours. Sir Conan Doyle masters detective fiction, who is almost all based on his works. WHEN TO READ? I red this book in the summer, in camping. It is very fun to read outdoor in the sun, but even more under the tent, at night, with a flashlight. It will bring you some chills! RECOMMENDATION: I think that The Hound of Baskervilles, if you like it or not, is a classic you must read once in your life. You will not regret it, so run to the library and take it! Have good deductions!

❝ Watership Down ❜
Tumblr media
By Richard Adams On November, 1972 England Fantasy - Fiction 478 pages Of all the writers, and of all the books, I must say that Richard Adams and Watership Down are my favorite. In these nearly five hundred pages, we follow a group of rabbits trough a long journey. Fiver, young and nervous, warns his brother, Hazel, about a certain danger coming on the warren. They must leave to prevent death, but who would want to? A little group of rabbits is formed, and begin the journey trough meadows, hills and farms, surviving by tricking their numerous enemies - cats, dogs, other rabbits, and of course, humans. Will they find the place they are meant to be? Or will they all perish under teeth and claws? « My heart has joined the Thousand, for my friend stopped running today » In this book, you will join the protagonists, but also their dear fellows, Bigwig, the strong, Dandelion, the storyteller, Silver, the quick, Blackberry, the clever, and Kehaar, the bird from the sea, and Hyzenthlay, the doe from Efrafa. Richard Adams always mastered the art of writing, but the true idea behind the book cam from the walks he would have with his daugthers, while walking around the warrens of a big hill : Watership Down. As they demanded him to write down his stories about rabbit Adams was telling on those days, this fiction won numerous awards and even was transformed in a movie, and in a series. « It comes from men. […] Men will never rest 'till they've spoiled the earth and destroyed the animals. » As I said, Watership Down is my favorite book. Even if it sounds childish because of the characters being animals, it is actually the opposite. it is one of the most serious story that I have red. The context is marvelously built : The rabbits have their own culture, stories, and poetry. As we follow the group to find their new home, we also discover their world by the adventures of El-Ahrairah. But Fiver and his friends have to look out dangers and predators of a even more real world that they discover along the story. A world far away from good dandelions, security from a warren. A world where hawks surround their prey, where shadows rule the forest and where humans are capable of atrocities to get what they want. We are instantly transported to a context of survival, and under the will of the Black Rabbit of Inle. Where to survive is the only thing the rabbits can do, we quickly discover the morality of life an death behind the words. It is coming for everyone. No matter how hard you try. And you shall accept it. RATING : 10/10, surely. WHEN TO READ? Always. I always keep my dear Watership Down somewhere near, because it is one of the few books that can make me cry. Of happiness. Because you believe so much in these rabbits, because you want them to live. And they are not the only one that have to accept that everyone must die someday. Well. I can say that I isn't so bad, but it is not a book to read if you want some summer-peaceful-love-story. It is not so dark (not as much as the movie), but keep kleenex near in case. Reading Watership Down is always a little moment I keep for myself, alone in my room, because I can capture more all the words. RECOMMENDATION : Read it! It is a book that will not leave you the same way you were before opening it. You can buy it at any time, even if you are eight years old or ninety-nine. THE MOVIE : The movie, animated, is as great as the book. I recommend it too, even if it is much darker. Seeing it when I was four or five, I know it has traumatized me a lot because of blood and everything. It is not for children! Good reading! « All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning, and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.. »
