Well, for starters, this eBike just looks good.

In fact, if you ask my 5-year-old-son what my wife’s favorite color is, he’ll say “Black” – so, most of our house is black and white. Even the dog. No joke.

But we really like the colors the Velotric eBike comes in.

Of course, we got the Jet Black color, but even it has some really subtle details like the two-toned tires. Awesome! I actually this eBike is one of the best-looking we’ve ever reviewed.

But, this bike doesn’t come in just boring black. It comes in other fun colors like Mango, Indigo Grey, Cyan and Pearl (an awesome white color).

If you want a bike that stands out from the crowd, Velotric is definitely the way to go.

The Velotric Discovery 1 eBike also has a few other features that set it apart.

Ergonomic Seating Positions

An upright riding position, more like a cruiser, is possible with this, unlike other bikes.

The Velotric Discover 1 has a unique 87-degree straightback sitting position that makes it more comfortable for commuting. That means that you won’t have to worry about being hunched over like you would on a traditional road bike. It’s more like a cruiser bike in many ways and allows you to ride in a fairly upright position.

In addition, the Velotric Discover 1 has an ergonomic design that makes it easier on your hands and wrists. This is especially important if you’re going to be riding your bike for long periods of time.

The step through design is also nice because it allows anyone, regardless of mobility problems to get on the bike on their own power.

Accommodates a wide range of heights

Some eBikes we’ve tested (like the RadRover 6 – read our RadRover 6 Plus Review) only accommodate taller riders.

Other eBikes don’t accommodate taller riders (like the Himiway Escape – read our Himiway Escape Review).

The Velotric Discover 1 accommodates riders 5’1″ to 6’4″ – that’s a pretty wide range!

So, whether you’re short or tall, the Velotric Discover 1 should be a comfortable ride.

Fully Integrated Design

The Velotric Discover 1 also has a fully integrated design. That means that the battery, controller, front and rear lights are all integrated into the bike itself.

This is a really nice feature because it means that you won’t have to worry about losing any of your parts or having them stolen. You don’t need to take off the battery (but you can). The battery life is more than adequate for your e-bike needs.

But the biggest reason we love this integrated design? It just looks really clean and sleek.

Built-in Rear Rack

Almost any eBike needs a rear rack, so it’s a little bit of a pet peeve of mine when they aren’t included, or cost extra. The Velotric Discovery 1 includes a pretty sturdy rear rack.

It has a max payload of 449 pounds – that includes the rider, so you have a good amount of extra weight you can lug around with the rear rack above the tires.

The rear rack also is equipped with integrated lights. What do integrated lights give you? They tap into the battery and also show when the brake is applied.

The full-coverage fenders (on the front and rear tires) add to the overall usability of the e-bike. We wish all ebikes were equipped with this!

Velotric eBike: What we love

There is a lot about the Velotric Discover 1 that we love. When we first got the eBike, we thought it was just a good-looking commuter bike. But the more we rode it, the more we realized that there was a lot to love about this eBike.

First of all, the Velotric Discover 1 is a great-looking bike (as we’ve mentioned).

This eBike is also focused on being a commuting machine. The 87-degree straightback sitting position is much more comfortable than a traditional road bike, and the ergonomic design makes it easier on your hands

A good balance between weight, speed and torque

The bike weighs 64 pounds or so. Which sounds like a lot, but it’s much lighter than other eBike with a similar range.

It also has a decently powered motor (peaking at 900W). But the thing that really stuck out was the Torque.

A note about torque

eBike torque is the amount of rotational force a motor can deliver and it’s important when it comes to the motor’s power. Put simply, if horsepower is how quickly work can be delivered, then torque is how much work it can do. eBike torque differs from horsepower because it defines how much an engine can do while horsepower only defines how fast that work can happen. eBike torque = oomph. eBike motors with higher torque will enable you to climb steeper hills with ease and maintain higher speeds on the flat. When shopping for your eBike, make sure to pay attention to the torque rating of the motor!

The RadRover 6 Plus, for comparison has 80 nM (newton meters) of torque, while the Discovery 1 has 65 nM. While that sounds like a lot, the RadRover 6 Plus is over 10 pounds heavier. The makes the Velotric Discover 1 a good balance between weight, speed, and torque.

On the most intense hill climb tests we could put this bike on, it had no problem, using a combo of pedal assist level settings and the throttle. It passed out test hill and hill test right out of the gate and had enough power for city streets, trails and hill climbs.

I almost put this as a negative for the Velotric eBike, but I changed my mind after riding it.

The Velotric is equipped with three levels of pedal assist: low, medium and high (the highest pedal assist level). This is a great feature because it allows you to customize your ride based on how much assistance you want from the motor.

Most other eBike have a fairly standard 5 different levels of pedal assist – some have up to 10 different levels. However, the truth is, you don’t need 5 or 10 levels of pedal assist, because you’ll only ever use a handful of them.

The Velotric eBike is also throttle on-demand, which means you can get power from the motor without pedaling if you want.

Able to handle offroad-ish

Ergonomic grips, the front spring fork and just a visually appealing bike overall.

We were pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was to ride, even up some of the steepest hills and on some fairly off-road trails. Please don’t take this bike on a serious mountain-biking adventure, but it’s more than capable to handle paved and unpaved travels – but really excels in road driving.

I wouldn’t trust this in mountain biking at all, but the front suspension and disc brakes make it confident on the road trails near the city.

The front suspension fork is great for light offroad duties of this e-bike but isn’t designed to take the mountains on.

Velotric Discover 1: What we didn’t love (but not deal killers)

We loved so much about the Velotric, that it’s hard to be nit-picky on the eBike.

The Brakes

Our brake test had no problems stopping the Velotric Discover 1 in relatively short order. However, we’ve been spoiled with hydraulic disc brakes recently. The Discover 1 comes with mechanical disc brakes that work pretty well, but it’s probably unrealistic to compare competitors bikes to this, when they cost about 50% more.

The LCD Display

Pedal Assist Setting is the big number at the bottom of the LCD. Up the level for steep hills.

Once again, I’m being a bit nit-picky here, but I didn’t care for the LCD Display.

I’ve seen other LCD Displays VERY similar to this one on other products reviewed. There wasn’t anything revolutionary here, but it did the job and was functional.

A New Brand

Another small thing, but Velotric is a relatively new brand.

Velotric is a new brand of eBike, but it’s already making waves in the industry. The company is led by Adam Zhang, who was a co-founder of hardware at Lime.

He’s assembled a team of top talent from some of the most iconic brands in the business, including Giant, Specialized and Decathlon. Velotric is quickly gaining a reputation for being one of the best eBike brands on the market. Thanks to its unique combination of style and substance, Velotric is quickly becoming the go-to choice for riders who want the best of both worlds.

It’s a minor concern that they will be around in 10 years, but honestly, an affordable eBike like this one should give you many years of enjoyment without any issues.

If you’re worried or have issues, you can actually call Velotric and talk to a real live human. That’s something that’s becoming increasingly rare these days.

The Velotric Discover 1 is also not designed for people who want the absolute best in performance and/or features. It’s a great value for the money, but there are other ebikes out there that offer more bells and whistles – but they come at a significantly higher price tag.

How easy is the Velotric Discover 1 to assemble?

The Discover 1 is very easy to assemble.

It took about 30 minutes total and I had next-to-no issues assembling this eBike.

Every single one of the e bikes that I’ve put together (and we are not up to about 20 e bikes that I’ve assembled) has some small issue.

Shipping a bike across the country (and in some cases across the world) in a shipping box is tough.

One of the most difficult parts of assembling an eBike is the front wheel, aligning with the mechanical disc brakes, but this was really easy. I finished assembling the Velotric eBike in about 30 minutes and I’m not a professional bike mechanic.

If you can change assemble something from IKEA, you can assemble this eBike.

We’ve been huge fans of Myles Apparel for 5+ years. We started with their first product, the Myles Everyday Short (read our full Myles Everyday Short Review and full brand Myles Review).

The first version of the short wasn’t perfect, but we kept following Myles and loved testing their new products.

Not too long ago, they updated their Everyday Short Fabric to be less noisy, softer, and even lighter. On top of that, they added a pocket on the back.

The Look of the Myles Everyday Pants

To be honest, I thought I would hate the way the Myles Everyday Pants LOOKED. But I couldn’t have been more wrong.

I thought they’d look like “dad pants.” You know, the dreaded convertible khakis made from nylon that make it sound like you’re wearing a pair of plastic grocery bags.

Just say no to dad pants like these.

But the Myles Everyday Pants don’t look anything like that. They actually look really good. They are a good cross between a chino, sweatpants, joggers and “adventure pants/dad pants.”

They have a modern, tailored fit that’s flattering on everyone. And they come in two inseam lengths: 30″ and 32″. So whether you’re tall or short, these pants will fit you perfectly. They don’t come in different waist sizes, just Small – 2XL, but I love the fact they come in different inseams. Frankly, I wish other pants did the same!

The Myles Everyday Pants are also available in four different colors: River (Blue), Fog (Dark Grey), Smoke (light grey) and Storm (a darker blue-grey).

No one will mistake these pants for sweatpants, but they also won’t mistake them for chinos, either.

They are a slightly more versatile version of a jogger that I would say is slightly more chino than jogger. Once again, you aren’t going to be able to wear these to a wedding but you could get away with wearing them to work (depending on your office’s dress code, of course).

I think the Myles Everyday Pants are a great option for anyone who wants a pant that is comfortable enough to live in but also presentable enough to leave the house in. And at $98, they’re not cheap but they’re also not super expensive either.

Comfort Level of the Myles Everyday Pants

I was surprised by how COMFORTABLE the Myles Everyday Pants are.

They are made from a light and quick-drying fabric with a comfortable waistband (the same fabric in the Myles Everyday short) And the updated design looks good whether you’re hitting the gym or the farmers market.

I also love that they have a water repellent finish. So if you’re caught in a rainstorm, or if you spill your coffee on them, no worries! The Myles Everyday Pants will keep you dry and comfortable all day long.

The Myles Everyday Pants are also super versatile. You can wear them to the gym, on a hike, to yoga class, or even to work (if you have a super casual environment). I’ve even worn them out to dinner and drinks with friends. They’re the perfect pant for any activity.

But to be honest, know where I wear these pants the most? The weekends playing with the kids at playgrounds.

Why?

The waterproof finish combined with the 4-way stretch is a game changer for potentially wet playgrounds. I don’t have to worry about if the slide is wet or if my kid spills their juice box on me. And I can still chase them around without feeling like I’m going to rip my pants.

I didn’t ask for it (and honestly, I don’t think I every would), but Myles sent me a pair of the Myles Everyday All Terrain Pant. What is it?

The Myles Everyday All Terrain Pant basically takes the Everyday Pant and adds a couple of features, most notably: cargo-esque pockets. It also features a real zipper fly (for some reason – I don’t know why that is more important on the “All Terrain” version but not with the version with 2 less pockets).

The Myles Everyday All Terrain Pant also has a cinch cord at the ankle so you can adjust the inseam length, which is great if you’re going to be wearing them over boots or need to tuck them into socks (if that’s your thing).

The Myles Everyday All Terrain Pant is available in two colors: Black and Storm (blue grey). And like the Everyday Pant, they come in two inseam lengths: 30″ and 32″.

So, should you buy the Myles Everyday All Terrain Pant? If you need/want cargo pockets and a more rugged pants, then yes. But if you don’t need those features, I would stick with the Myles Everyday Pant.

The Pockets weren’t that bad, honestly…

I thought the pockets would be terrible on the All Terrain pant. I thought they would look worse than socks in a pair of Crocs. But they didn’t.

You actually barely notice them. The only thing that draws attention to them is the high-contrast fabric on each zipper, but you can easily take them off.

If you want extra pockets, go bananas and buy the Myles Everyday All Terrain Pant.

If not, don’t worry about it and save yourself $30 by buying the Myles Everyday Pant.

Final Thoughts on the Myles Everyday Pants

I’m really impressed with the Myles Everyday Pants. They are comfortable, versatile, and look great on everyone. If you’re looking for a new go-to pant, I highly recommend the Myles Everyday Pant.

What is Western Rise?

Western Rise is a technical apparel company that produces clothing for both men and women. The company is based in Denver, Colorado and all of their products are made in the USA. Western Rise focuses on creating clothing that is both functional and stylish.

They utilize a wide range of proprietary fabrics their own “Limitless” Merino wool to their own AirLoft and DryWeight fabrics. Western Rise also offers a wide variety of styles from pants and shorts to shirts and jackets.

Why they started Western Rise

Western Rise was started for a simple reason, the founders were outdoor guides who wanted a duffle bag full of clothing that could take them from the mountains to the city. They wanted clothing that was both functional and stylish.

They wanted to spend less time dealing with clothes and more time doing what they love. That sounds like a great idea to us!

What We Love About Western Rise

Simply put: there’s a ton to love about Western Rise.

No Crazy Designs – Only Timeless Ones

You won’t find crazy designs at Western Rise – just classic styles. We love Western Rise’s design philosophy of timeless clothes that stand the test of time (even if they are technical fabrics not available even a couple of years ago).

Focused on Performance

Western Rise is a clothing company that specializes in performance apparel with unmatched versatility. Their products are made with high-quality materials and attention to detail, meaning that you’ll be able to wear their clothes for any activity, whether it’s hiking, running, or just going to the grocery store.

Super Sustainability

Western Rise also believes in sustainability and using recycled materials whenever possible. So not only will their clothes last you a long time, but you can feel good knowing that you’re supporting a company that is doing its part to reduce its environmental impact. What We Don’t Like About Western Rise

While Western Rise has made some serious improvements since we last tried them out, there are still a few areas where they could improve, that we’ll highlight in the product below.

Most of all: they could have a little more stretch in many of their clothes and their clothes run a little small.

I know there are technical reasons that you don’t want your close to the be loose and that’s more of a personal preference.

First Impressions

When we first tried Western Rise, we were not impressed. The clothing felt stiff and uncomfortable, and the sizing was off. However, we decided to give them another chance and we’re glad we did. First things, first, we tried the AT Pant about 5 years ago and really didn’t like it. When Western Rise started advertising their new Evolution 2.0 Pant (now on Kickstarter) we had to reach out and see if we could get an early version of the pant.

Sadly, they aren’t available yet – but we had the chance to review Evolution 1.0 Pant, the Diversion Pant and the Spectrum Jogger.

We try to not pick what clothes will be our favorite before we try them on, but we knew that we would love the Spectrum Jogger.

The Spectrum Jogger has the ability to be both comfortable and stylish, making them perfect for any occasion. The fabric is made of flexible warp-knit material that’s lightweight yet durable so you can wear these jogging pants on your next adventure or just around town!

We love the Spectrum Joggers because they’re incredibly comfortable and super stretchy.

These would be perfect pants for running errands or even traveling (am I the only one that doesn’t like to travel in shorts?).

They are slightly less dressy than other Chinos (see our best men’s pants guide for more, but they are a new staple in our rotation, for sure.

The pants have a great medium weight and a stretch waistband. It also has a zippered security pocket.

About the Spectrum Fabric

Spectrum fabric is a warp knit that exists somewhere between knitting and weaving, giving you the soft, stretch feel of a knit with the weight and durability of a woven fabric.

Built for active movement, the Spectrum Jogger offers extreme breathability, stretch, water and stain resistance and a touch of sophistication. Spectrum fabric is also perfect for travel as it is light, packable and quick drying. The Spectrum Jogger is available in men’s and women’s styles in a variety of colors.

The Diversion pant is a completely different pant than we thought it would be, but not in a bad way.

It’s much thicker than the joggers and the Western Rise Evolution Pant, too. However, it’s stretchier than the Evolution Pant but not as stretchy as the jogger.

I know that’s a big of an odd combination, but it works.

It’s thicker, but also breathable and has a 4-way stretch. On top of that, the Diversion Pant is stain-resistant and water resistant. It also has a gusset, which is a lot of technology to put in a pair of pants – and not look like technical pants.

The Diversion Pant also has hidden pockets (and a zippered pocket, too).

These are the best looking pants in the bunch, but I do wish it had slightly more stretch. They call it the “ultimate everyday pant,” but it may be a little too slim pant design for me.

About the Diversion Fabric

Diversion Fabric is a new type of fabric that is being used in the Western Rise Diversion pant. This fabric is a combination of a durable nylon canvas work pant with the interior dobby weave of a pair of sweatpants.

The Diversion Fabric is interwoven with elastane, which gives it unmatched four-way stretch and drape. This makes the Diversion Fabric incredibly comfortable and built for movement.

The Diversion Fabric is also topped with a “self-cleaning” durable water repellant to shed dirt, dust and stains, making the pants comfortable in any weather. The Diversion Fabric is a great innovation that is sure to revolutionize the way people think about comfort and style.

Final Thoughts on the Diversion Pants

They sat that it is designed to be tougher than workwear, more comfortable than sweatpants and more stylish than jeans.

It is tough.

It’s not more comfortable than a sweatpant.

And it does look nicer than jeans.

So, two out of three isn’t bad.

Also, be sure to size up on both this pair and the Evolution pants. They do run a little small.

We liked how lightweight the Evolution Pant is, but we wish the Evolution Pants had the stretch of the Diversion Pants. The Evolution Pants only features two-way stretch.

Like so many of Western Rise’s Pants, these pants are Water and Stain Resistant. It’s also abrasion resistant. We didn’t have a chance to test these highly technical fabrics – like abrasion resistance, but hope to test this (and the water-resistant fabrics) in a more thorough test, soon.

In short, these pants might be great for your next adventure, but we just wish they were a little more stretchy and comfortable.

These are like the slightly more-fit version of the Boundless Short Review.

They are water ready, lightweight, but only have two-way stretch.

They are a great pair of gym or running shorts, but don’t look as dressy as the Boundless Short.

These would also be a great pair of work-from-home shorts, too – it checks all the boxes there.

About the Movement Fabric

Western Rise was in need of a fabric that would both keep the wearer comfortable while also being able to handle a lot of movement and activity. They found what they were looking for in Movement Fabric from Toray in Japan.

Mizzen and Main really turned me into a vest guy. Western Rise Clothing is doing the exact same thing with their Airloft vest.

This bad boy is a high-performance vest that regulates temperature, is water-resistant, adaptable, and stretches in all directions.

To be honest with you, this vest is not as thick as I thought it was going to be, but it’s another item that checks all the boxes.

While we were shocked at how thin the AirLoft Vest was, we were really surprised at how thick the Limitless Merino Button Up was.

However, it wasn’t super thick in a bad way, at all.

In fact, it was a pleasent change from shirts like Mizzen + Main (read our Mizzen + Main Review and our Best Performance Dress Shirts for more). The shirt was thick, but it was still super breathable.

Being huge fans of other Merino clothes (hello, Allbirds and Duckworth – read our Duckworth Review), we know that even if it is thicker, Merino does at a great job at regulating temperature, is moisture-wicking and has great wrinkle resistance.

We love how Western Rise’s clothing has next to no branding.

Final Thoughts on The Limitless Button Up

What’s not to love about a shirt with all of the great features mentioned earlier. If you’re spending time outdoors (or indoors), you need wool in your life.

The weight of this shirt will be up to your personal preference is you like something this thick. This would be a really good transitional piece into a cooler evening somewhere like the beach. I wouldn’t recommend it for something SUPER hot (see our best cooling clothes for more), but an evening on the beach or a boat would be perfect for this shirt during the summer.

During the winter, I can see wearing this shirt about as often I do my Mizzen + Main Flannels (read our Mizzen + Main Flannel Review).

The X-Cotton tee is a Performance cotton tee that is ultra-soft, stretches in every direction, wicks moisture, and resists odors. This shirt is best for everyday or just lounging.

It’s a slightly heavier weight shirt but features a 4-way stretch that is moisture-wicking and odor resistant. It’s made from 60% cotton, 35% Polyester and 5% Elastane.

We really liked this shirt but thought the price of $48 was a bit steep. The X-Cotton tee comes in sizes S-XXL and six colors.

We found the X-Cotton tee to be very comfortable, with a great fit. The fabric was soft and stretchy without being clingy, and the shirt washed well without shrinking or losing shape.

If you’re looking for a comfortable, versatile tee that will hold up to repeated washings, the X-Cotton tee is a great option. However, at $48 it’s one of the more expensive performance tees.

You can find other poly-cotton blend t-shirts like Fresh Clean Tees (read our Fresh Clean Tees Review) or True Classic Tees (check out the True Classic Tees Review and the True Classic vs. Fresh Clean Tees comparison) for much less.

Once again, not a bad item. It was incredibly well-made and we love the odor-fighting protection here.

We’re super glad that we gave Western Rise another chance. We really like their brand new Boundless shorts, the Spectrum Jogger is amazing and the AirLoft Vest was a super pleasant surprise.

We will continue to update this review when the new Evolution Pants 2.0 come out to give you our honest opinion.

Our only tips are to size up in the Evolution Pants and the Diversion Pants and set your expectations appropriately. While they aren’t going to be as stretchy as something like the Myles Tour Pants, they are going to be more durable.

Why we are reviewing the best cooling clothes

Do you always feel hot, even when it’s not summer? Do you wear shorts around the home year-round? When summer hits, that becomes an instant problem: what do you wear when it’s REALLY hot outside?

Several clothing brands claim to cool you down, but do they actually work? We try shirts from Arctic Cool, Mizzen + Main, Fioboc and many more to see if anything can save you from the Summer Heat.

What to look for when buying cooling clothes

When you’re looking for the best cooling clothes, there are a few things you should keep in mind:

Overall look is important here. You need clothes that don’t look like “tech” clothes. They can be filled with high tech fabrics and high tech materials, but they don’t need to look like it.

The fabric is important. It’s the key to making the clothing cooling

Fit is also important. Clothes that are too tight won’t allow your skin to breathe and will make you feel hotter.

Color is another factor to consider. Light colors reflect sunlight and heat, while dark colors absorb it.

Another important attribute is odor control. We sweat when we’re hot and you don’t want a stinky shirt.

Why you won’t find linen in the best cooling clothes review

On every single hot weather clothes list you find on the internet, you’ll find linen as one of the top items on the list.

Well, you know what? I’m not a bed and I don’t want my shirt to be made from the same material as the bed sheet. I’m sorry that I’m not sorry here.

Linen is great for many things, but I’ve never seen someone in linen and thought to myself, “Wow, that guy looks comfortable… I want to look exactly like him.”

In fact, it’s the same look I give people that wear Vibram Five Fingers. I don’t care if it helps you live 10 years longer, I wouldn’t be caught dead in them.

So, what is the best fabric for hot weather clothes?

As you’ll see in this round up for the best clothes for the guy that runs hot – most of these clothes are actually synthetic – or have a synthetic/natural blend.

Cotton is obviously very breathable – but you know what else cotton is? It’s a water magnet. So, if you’re sweating (and you will be) that sweat is going to sit on your skin and make you feel even hotter.

Polyester, on the other hand, is a synthetic fabric that does an excellent job of wicking away moisture. It’s also very lightweight, which helps keep you cool.

Bamboo Clothing is also a great option for the summer because it’s lightweight, breathable and has a natural cooling effect.

Cotton also wrinkles like a mofo. So, you don’t want to be wearing 100% cotton (or even linen) because you will look like you slept in your clothes.

Ok, now that we know what to look for – let’s get into the best cooling clothes for men!

The best mens summer clothes are a synthetic/natural blend

As I mentioned above, the best fabric for hot weather clothes is a synthetic/natural blend.

This is because the natural fibers (usually cotton or even something like bamboo) help with breathability and the synthetic fibers (usually polyester) help with moisture wicking and wrinkle resistance.

The only, and we mean only, caveat we’ve found to this is merino wool clothing.

Merino wool clothing is great for hot weather because it helps you stay cool and it doesn’t wrinkle. It’s breathable and also anti-microbial.

It’s not magic and doesn’t come out of the box looking like a Mizzen + Main Shirt, however, the wrinkles to disappear after a few minutes of wearing it.

How does moisture wicking work?

If you’re looking for cooling clothes, you’ll see the phrase moisture-wicking thrown out more times than you can count.

But what does it actually mean?

Moisture-wicking fabric actually has two jobs:

Quickly moving (or wicking) sweat to the fabric’s outer surface

The other is drying rapidly so that your sweat doesn’t saturate the fabric.

The fabric accomplishes this by moving the sweat away from your body through a process called “wicking.” Wicking fabric is usually made of synthetic materials such as polyester or nylon, which are better at wicking than natural fibers like cotton.

When you sweat, the moisture is absorbed by the fabric and then transported to the outer surface where it can evaporate quickly. This process keeps the fabric dry and prevents it from sticking to your skin, which helps you feel more comfortable. This helps keep you cool and dry, which is obviously important when it’s hot outside.

The result is that you’re more comfortable because your body can regulate its temperature efficiently and the fabric touching your skin has a dry, nonsticky feel.

But how does that make you cool?

Sweating is a cooling process when you’re working up a good sweat. Sweat evaporates as your skin temperature drops, producing a cooling effect. When your body stops sweating, it’s because its skin temperature has cooled to an acceptable level. It’s a really efficient mechanism that moisture-wicking fabric can enhance.

Moisture-wicking fabrics are a must for hot weather clothes. Not only do they help keep you cool, but they also prevent the fabric from sticking to your skin and make you more comfortable overall.

I will never forget the day I was in New York City. It was a record-breaking day for heat.

I arrived in the evening to check into my hotel. I thought to myself, “The sun is down, it’d can’t be hot, right?” I don’t know if I’ve ever been more wrong in my life.

The Aero Zero is my favorite Button-up from Ministry of Supply clothing.

It’s 100% recycled and milled under solar power, their Aero Zero° fabric is incredibly soft, light, and coiled for comfortable everyday stretch.

While it’s not as stretchy as Mizzen + Main Shirt (read our full Mizzen + Main Shirt Review), it is a great-looking button-up shirt.

One really cool feature for hot days that make this a must-have cooling clothing pick: it has laser perforation in the underarms for ventilation. How awesome is that? No more sweaty pits.

Or maybe I should say, “less sweaty pits.” That’s also good for anti-odor issues, too.

The shirts are also quick drying – almost dry when they come out of the wash after a spin cycle (cold water) – but just hang dry. It’s that easy.

The Aero Zero looks good whether you’re wearing it with jeans or chinos and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. If you’re looking for a new go-to shirt, I highly recommend checking out the Aero Zero from MoS Clothing.

This whole review started because I came across an ad for Arctic Cool. They claimed to keep your temperatures cooler – or your money back. So, I thought I’d check them out. But they aren’t my number 1 pick, but there are several that are VERY close!

I recently came across Fioboc (they actually reached out to me). As I’ve mentioned many times, I get asked to try all shorts of clothing and I pass most of time because the technology always seems to be just so-so or I do’t like the overall style.

However, since my body temperature is always running hot and warm weather was just around the corner, I had to give these t shirts a shot.

Well, TMI warning here: I usually can’t wear lighter colors because my chest hair pokes through. I don’t have a Burt Reynolds – type fur, but I do have thicker chest hair.

On top of that, it’s got natural bamboo fibers.

While I don’t think it will completely hide all chest hair (and let’s be honest, why would you want to?), it definitely makes it less noticeable.

I’ve had some Arctic Cool Clothes for a while now (read our full Arctic Cool Review). They’ve got a wide range of clothes from crew neck t-shirts to polo shirts to even shorts – and products available for both men and women.

We frequently wear the crew neck shirt on hot days.

At first, we thought the shirt may feel scratchy, based on the pictures. We were pleasantly surprised that this shirt didn’t feel scratchy at all. It was super soft and felt like cotton, but cooler. In our test, it helped me stay cool.

Our only pet peeve is the big logo on the front: we aren’t huge fans of giant logos, but it wasn’t unreasonable.

How this all started

The ABC Pants that started it all.

A couple of years ago, came across the Lululemon ABC Pants (and read our Lululemon “jeans” review) and was immediately intrigued (I love their ABC Pants, read our ABC Pants Review) by finding a perfect alternative to jeans.

In short, I was trying to find the best men’s pants – casual pants… not jeans.

That sent me down an internet rabbit hole, like most things. I came across many jean alternatives and just great pairs of pants – ranging from the $198 Outlier Pants to Myles to even a viable option that only costs $19.99 at Costco. Yes, that Costco.

Curious about what I found as the best Men’s Pants (or even the perfect Jeans Alternative)? Read on!

Best Pants for Men – A Jeans Alternative – What Was I Looking For?

I was looking for four primary features when looking at the best Jean Alternative:

Needs to look good: Nothing worse than “tech pants” that look like tech pants – or even dad pants. These pants need to look good!

Breathable: Sometimes it just gets hot in the summer and I wanted to find a jeans alternative that was a little cooler.

Stretchy: I like pants that are stretchy. If they aren’t too stretchy, they are still comfortable and look decent.

Easy to care for: This means wrinkle-resistant and machine wash only – you can’t have a great pair of pants that are high maintenance.

A True Jean Alternative: I also wanted to find a jean alternative that could really pass as a jean alternative, meaning I could wear a button-up (something I could pair with something like a Mizzen + Main Dress Shirt (read our Mizzen + Main Review and our best performance dress shirt guide), t-shirt or polo shirt with the jean alternative.

What I wasn’t looking for

A quick note on what I was NOT looking for: cargo pants, skinny jeans alternatives, any sort of pleated pants, linen pants – I wanted a versatile pair of pants that could be called the best casual pants. Something I could wear to work, to the bar or out on the town with friends to be honest

What kind of pants are there?

In our massive search for the best pants for men, we came across several clear styles to give you the best.

Jeans

Of course, there is the classic American Denim. This pant round-up won’t focus on these at all. But if you want to read more, check out our guide to the best men’s jeans. Also, check out our Perfect Jean Review, too.

Tech-Alternative Jeans

Our favorite kinds of pants we’ve found are the tech-alternative jeans: like the Lululemon Tech Canvas Pants and the Ministry of Supply Kinetic Twill Pants (read our Kinetic Twill Pants Review).

What are Tech-Alternative pants? They are pants that kinda, sorta look like jeans. They look like jeans in a way that if you didn’t look too closely. They are “jean-like,” and are a pair of pants that tend to have some stretch.

Chinos

Chinos are the all-American classic – typically made from cotton, we’ve found some styles that are an instant upgrade to the older-style chinos most dudes wear to work for their work pants. You may call these dress pants, slacks, trousers, or something else.

While we think jeans look a little nicer, overall, these are a good middle ground between jeans and sweats. ; we’ve seen thousands of new chino brands come out from everyone, so it’s really hard to narrow down the list, but we’ll do our very best.

Wait… what about Khakis?

We tend to group chinos and Khakis together. First of all, Khaki is just a color. But there is a difference between Khakis a chinos… what is it?

Chinos are made with a lightweight cotton or cotton blend fabric, and they have visible stitching, which gives them a more finished, formal, and dressy look. Khakis are made with a heavier weight cotton fabric, and the stitching on khakis is hidden. Khakis are typically thought of as more casual because of the sturdier fabric.

Fun fact: the Khaki material was also designed to be more of a work pant or work trousers..

5-Pocket Pants

What are 5-pocket pants? 5 Pocket pants are a type of pant that has, you guessed it, 5 pockets. 3 in the front, and 2 in the back. The 5th pocket is typically a small pocket on the right side, near the waistband, and is meant for a pocket watch or other small item.

5-pocket pants have been around for a while, and they are a great alternative to jeans. They are usually made from denim, but can also be made from other materials like corduroy or chino fabric.

Is it a chino for jeans people, or a jean for chinos people? Yes.

Joggers

Joggers are a new addition to the We Tried It wardrobe. Joggers can be made from either a more casual sweat pant like fabric or something closer to a chino-type fabric. We tend to gravitate toward the slightly-more-dressy version that don’t look like sweatpants

Sweats

Sweats, or Sweat Pants aren’t really part of this round up – and neither are leggings or cargo pants. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Joggers could be considered sweatpants but aren’t for this review.

Best Pants: Meet The Contenders

As I mentioned, I first started this epic tour of jean alternatives after seeing the Lululemon Tech Canvas pants. Since then, I’ve tried pants from Ministry of Supply, Western Rise, Myles, Olivers and even Perk.

Whew, there are a ton of different Chinos on the market and we could easily break this into a separate post on the different styles.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of chino styles out on the market today, some that look better than others, some that fit better than others and some that are simply better looking than others. Chino pants, whether you’re looking for a classic or something that is just comfortable, you have a ton of options!

These are considered “dress pants” by most folks and can be dressed up or down, depending upon the situation.

ABC Pants are what started us venturing out into the world of pants – beyond jeans and Chinos.

But what exactly is this ” ABC” technology? ABC stands for “anti-ball crushing.”

This means that the pants are designed to give your boys some extra room, while still providing a slim and flattering fit.

ABC pants are available in a variety of styles, colors and fabrics, so you’re sure to find a pair that suits your needs. We particularly like the ABC Commission Pants, which is made from a lightweight fabric that’s perfect for summer weather.

There are a couple downsides to ABC Pants:

Their sizing can be a bit inconsistent (but they are great at returns!)

They price – at about $130, they are a bit expensive

I highly recommend the Bluffworks Gramercy Pants to anyone who wants a pair of dress pants that they can actually enjoy wearing.

Looks just as good, if not better than a real suit.

Even better: they don’t look like athletic pants or even athleisure pants.

They have a “tailored fit” but they’re also stretchy and breathable (but I would recommend getting every suit tailored by a professional to make it look even more expensive).

Some people might call these travel pants, but I wouldn’t. I would much rather travel in something a little more comfortable than these. So, pack these in your carry-on because these look like high-quality wool dress pants. They don’t wrinkle, either – so you don’t have to worry about carefully packing them. Pair them with the Bluffworks Blazer (also machine washable and wrinkle free) and you’ve got the perfect fit for date night, work and a whole lot more.

No one but you will know they’re secretly the most comfortable dress pants you’ll ever own.

Everlane makes great clothes. The Everlane Performance Chinos are no different. They look clean and classic.

Unlike some of the other products on the list (especially the Lululemon Tech Canvas), if you look close, the pants may look really technical (ie “Not real pants”).

No one will ever think that the Everlane Performance Chinos are technical, they simply look like your classic pair of slim fit chinos.

At $88, they are cheaper on this list than others, but they do have some limitations.

The only downside?

The Everlane Performance Chinos are not as stretchy as some other brands.

Even though these chinos are 94% Cotton, 6% Elastane, I would not recommend them if you are looking for a lot of stretch in your pants.

However, I do think that Everlane hit the nail on the head with their website description of these pants. T

hey are comfortable, stylish, simple and a great value at $68! If you are looking for a pair of performance chinos that aren’t too crinkly, too tech-y, and too expensive, I would definitely recommend checking out Everlane’s Performance Chinos – just don’t expect a ton of stretch.

Reddit really loves Outlier clothes, for some reason. Their marketing is sexy, sure, but I hated their clothes.

Outlier Slim Dungarees

I also tried out Outlier Slim Dunagrees. I tell you what – they do a great job of selling their product. Every product description makes you belive that if you wear them, you will become 10 years younger and be able to scale skyskrapers with a single bound. I will say this: the product is amazing. However, I simply didn’t like the style. I will write a longer Outlier Review in the near future, too. The short version is: Amazing fabric and craftmanship, but you have to fit their style.

The Slim Dunagrees look like work pants. Like something you could wear in the oil field (and they are strong enough that you probably could), however, that’s not my style. I was trying them on for Mrs. We Tried It and she said, “What are you doing? Going to a construction site?” That’s all I needed to hear.

GapFit Khakis

Are the GapFit Khakis a cheaper alternative to the Lululemon ABC Pants? Read my honest GapFit Khakis review.

I hoped these would be a better, cheaper ABC Pant alternative, but instead, they just looked like terrible dad pants – minus the convertible zipper to turn them into shorts.

A Note From Mrs. We Tried It

To be honest with you, a lot of these pants looked the same. From a looks perspective, the Everlane Chinos were my favorite. They are simple and clean. They don’t look techy at all. I have a ton of Everlane clothes and love them!

After that would probably be the Myles Tour Pant and then the English Laundry 365 Pants. But you simply can’t beat the price of the 365 Pants!

I’d stay away from the Outlier Pants (they look like construction-site pants), and the GapFit Pants. EW!

Other surprising pants we reviewed

We tried some other interesting pants that didn’t really fit into the other categories that we really liked.

English Laundry 365 Pants

Call me super surprised here. I’m shocked that the best overall pant for the price was the English Laundry 365 Pant. When I first did my major jean alternative review, I was ready to name a winner. Then, came across these pants at Costco. Yes, THAT Costco.

These are made of 64% cotton, 34% polyester, and 2% spandex (much like the pricier Lululemon Tech Canvas!) at a fraction of the price! The English Laundry 365 Pants are full of technology and breathable, moisture-wicking Sorbtek technology keeps you cool, dry, and they look slightly more dressy than jeans.

The Lululemon Tech Canvas Pants may have been 2% more comfortable, but they did not look dressy at all!

Even better, if you don’t have a Costco membership, the English 365 Pant is available for purchase on Amazon.

I thought I would hate the new Myles Everyday Pants – that they would look like “dad pants.” But I was totally wrong.

Made from the same materials as the Myles Everyday Shorts (read our Everyday Short Review and our Myles Brand Review), these pants are lightweight and functional. A tad in style above sweats and just as functional, these bad boys will be added to the Saturday morning rotation taking kids to the park and running errands, for sure!

With a slimmer fit than other similar pants (and also a drawstring waist), these have a roomy fit that is still a relaxed fit. But – it looks more like a slim fit, if that makes sense at all.

Ultimate Men’s Pants Review: The final Verdict!

Whew! This was a long one. Thanks for hanging in there. The long and short of it is: there are a ton of options that aren’t Ralph Lauren or Hugo Boss.

There also isn’t a clear best pair for a simple reason: it all depends on what you are looking for.

For the best value: go with the English Laundry 365 Pants. For the most classic style, go with Everlane.

However, if I could only pick one of these styles (and it couldn’t be jeans), I’d pick the Myles Tour Pant.

For the most comfortable but most casual, go with the Ministry of Supply Kinetic Twill Pants or their Kinetic Jogger.

In fact, I was all done shooting the video review of ROT and was about to pack up my equipment. Then I tried on the Crew and it surprised me at how tight the neck was.

I don’t think I have a super large neck or anything, but just something that I’d want to know if I was in your shoes.

If you are worried about it – start with a henley, v-neck or polo – you’ll love the shirts.

To be honest, I get a ton of requests to review different clothes ,and I just promise to give you my honest opinion. I was intrigued by ROT for a couple of reasons:

The price point was so low, I had to make sure they weren’t too good to be true.

I love supporting veteran-owned businesses. I just make YouTube Reviews, veterans are out there doing the real work.

I even asked Chris Hill, the CEO + Founder of Rule of Threads if he could pass along a couple of styles for my brother-in-law, who is in the army. He was happy to.

In short, I really did love almost everything about Rule of Threads. The only thing that was a bit surprising (and not even bad) was the crew neck’s neck was a little tight for my liking. Once again, not a deal killer, but something I would like to know if I was considering this brand.

But, the micro-ribbed fabric is simply amazing. It’s a slightly heavier weight, but also allows for it to feel cool to the touch and is very breathable.

Lululemon Pool Short Swim Short Review

Do these look like swim trunks to you? They are the Lululemon Pool Shorts.

What are the pool shorts made of?

The pool shorts swim, trunks are made from 89% Recycled polyester, 11% Elastane. Elastane is the stuff that makes it stretchy. They also have a built-in liner and elastic waistband for super comfort.

They are also Water-repellent, Abrasion-resistant and feature Breathable mesh fabric liner with Xtra Life Lycra® for chlorine resistance.

I’ve personally worn my other pair of lululemon men’s swim trunks for two seasons – it’s what makes them one of the best swim trunks you’ll ever own.

And I didn’t wear my swim trunks lightly. I typically would wear them 3-4 times a week. They make for a great pair of shorts.

Lululemon Men’s Swim Trunks: The Look

Lululemon Pool Short Swim Shorts can be worn with a polo or nothing else at all.

My first thought on opening the Lululemon Pool shorts is that they certainly don’t look like swim trunks, but rather smart shorts that could easily be worn with a polo or athletic t-shirt. Equally, you could pair them with a pair of flip-flops, loafers or sneakers depending on your mood!

What I don’t like in swim trunks

Before I tell you what I love about these swim trunks, let me quickly tell you what I do not like in swim trunks.

It takes a certain type of guy to wear these swim trunks (Chubbies), that person just isn’t me.

I’m always looking for great swim trucks that don’t look super obnoxious. I like shorts that look like normal shorts – not something that looks like it was only designed for the beach. That’s just my personal style.

I also hate shorts that don’t have pockets.

I prefer something to either have a super comfortable mesh lining or no mesh liner at all.

Gone are the days in many other brands of a super uncomfortable, right mesh liner in swim trunks.

Lululemon Commission Shorts: Our previous vote for Best Swim Trunks

Sadly, lululemon doesn’t make our previous pick for the best swim trunk, the Commission Swim Short.

The Commission Swim Short took a chino-style short and turned them into swimming trunks, that didn’t look like swimming trunks.

The fabric looks almost identical to the ABC Pant Fabric.

The details are a bit different – like the elastic waistband.

These shorts also incorporated Lululemon’s hidden pockets, perfect for storing your wallet or phone… just be sure to remove your phone before you jump in the water! It’s worth noting that the pockets are mesh-lined for quick-drying which is good. Nothing worse than a soggy pocket!

They also have a 9″ inseam on the short. This puts them more in line with the Myles Short (or other casual shorts you’d wear). There is a trend toward loud, short swims shorts (I’m looking at you, Chubbies!) and I like a more casual, relaxed-looking short – especially when I’m lugging the 3-year old around.

Lululemon Pool Short: The Fit and Function

Lululemon does make some BRIGHT Pool Short Swim Trunks, just FYI – but I have the black pair.

Besides yoga pants, lululemon does make some great men’s swim trunks in different colors. I tend to like simple colors like black in my men’s swim trunks.

These short are very comfortable! I’m a 32/33-inch waist and I opted for a medium. This made for a perfect fit.

The stretchy material and elasticated waistband make them super flexible and they move with the body with no restriction.

While I wouldn’t recommend them for “fancy” shorts Iike wearing to the office, but I’d have no problem wearing them to run errands.

However, what I’d use them the most for is: run (or walk or ride one of my eBikes) all the way to the pool, and then jump in. The material is breathable, making them feel really lightweight, keeping you cool throughout the day.

Let’s talk about pockets for a second

Red: not a bad option for men’s swim trunks, honestly. If you can pull these swim trunks off – go for it! Notice the nice side pockets, too.

Much like women love dresses with pockets, I need pockets in my swim trunks. In fact, I need them in my swim trunks.

Why? I still usually have my cell phone and typically my wallet. Going to the local pool, I also usually need a pool tag to get in the pool and a couple of quarters (for popsicles, actually).

Mesh lining

One thing worth mentioning in our Lululemon swim trunks review is that these shorts do have a mesh lining, unlike the Commission Swim Trunks or the board men’s swim shorts listed below.

Pool Shorts: Swim Shorts Sizes

These swim trunks come in a couple of different lengths. They come with a seven inch inseam and a five inch inseam.

Both of these swimming trunks are great – but you have to pick the correct length for you. I’ve found the seven inch inseam to be right for me and the best men’s swim trunks size.

Some other pants pride themselves on short swim shorts, like Chubbies, we don’t like wearing short shorts.

Lululemon has managed to design a fully-functional and versatile pair of swim shorts. You could easily wear these to the office in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, and then dress them up for the evening BBQ or beach bar. Their smart appearance and the fact that they are not super loud when you walk, means that no one will even know you’re wearing swim trunks.

At $88, they might be more than you’d usually pay for a pair of swimmers, but you do get what you pay for. They are long-lasting, stylish, well-crafted, and super high quality. I’ll be wearing these all summer long!

I also tried out the Current State Board Short (not as clever as the Namaste at the Beach Board Short name for the previous product, if I must say so myself!).

Lululemon Current State Board Short: The Look

Right now the Current State Board Short is only available in a 9″ inseam.

They are 2 inches longer than the Pool Short Swim Shorts. They look “sportier” than the other pairs and definitely could not be worn casually – only to the pool or working out.

They do not have mesh lining; these are classic board shorts – not true swim trunks.

Lululemon Current State Board Short: The Fit and Function

I actually liked the way the Lululemon Current State Board Shorts fit. They were comfortable overall.

Here’s what I didn’t like the most about the Current State Board Shorts: the pockets! Or should I say the lack thereof. The Current State Board shorts only have some oddly placed pockets.

See the odd pocket on the side? Great for a classic surfing fit, but not super practical.

Multiple pockets, but not very convenient – like the side pockets.

Also – no velcro here – that doesn’t play well with sand. No one wants a summer full of sand in their velcro while surfing, right?

Lululemon Current State Board Short: The Final Verdict

Overall, the Lululemon Current State Board Short is a great, overall beach short if you can get over the oddly placed pockets. It also doesn’t have any mess lining, which is OK – here’s what to wear under board shorts.

We really like Ministry of Supply products, and this pair of pants is no exception.

They don’t call their clothes athlesiure, they call it “Workleisure” – which I really like. Their clothing is all high-tech and low maintenance. It’s also comfortable and made with style in mind, too.

Kinetic Pants: Everything you need to know

Meet the Ministry of Supply Kinetic Pant line.

The Kinetic pant fabric is the fabric that ran a record-shattering half-marathon (it was a bit of a marketing stunt, we know – but still to see someone able to run a marathon in a Kinetic Suit). Read our full Ministry of Supply Suit Review, too.

Kinetic Pants are made from Japanese Primeflex polyester which offers incredible 4-way stretch.

This warp knit japanese polyester Kinetic fabric has the structure of a woven, but with an immense capacity for omnidirectional motion thanks to spring-like fibers that stretch without wearing out or breaking down.

Look at how wrinkle-resistant this Ministry of Supply Kinetic Fabric really is!

These pants look like woven pants (think something like your favorite pair of Chinos, but they act more like a pair of sweatpants or yoga pants. Stretchy + dress + breathable = awesome.

If it was possible to have a whole wardrobe of JUST Kinetic products, that would be pretty awesome.

Where do these pants fit with jeans and chinos?

The Kinetic Twill Pants are a good in-between jeans and chinos. Let me explain.

First of all, these pants look more like a pair of chinos with a jean-like wash. Compare that to something like the lululemon ABC Pants “Jeans” which look like they are trying to be jeans but you’re not fooling anyone with those pants.

What do they REALLY look like?

These pants actually look a little nicer than most jeans and I’ve got a lot of compliments wearing them. They don’t look like something else that is trying to be jeans – they almost look more like a nice chino-like fabric that is uniquely colored.

There is a variation of the color, which is the part that is the most jean-like – and frankly we like it like that!

While you can’t really wear these as true dress pants because of the 5-pocket design, you can dress them up with a nice polo or a Mizzen + Main Dress Shirt (read our Mizzen + Main Review). If you want true dress pants, get something like the Ministry of Supply Kinetic Pants (read our MoS Suit Review for more information).

Do they look like jeans or chinos?

You can see the ABC Tech Canvas pants have a lot of texture – more so than a traditional pair of jeans, actually.

You can clearly see, up-close that these don’t look exactly like jeans – but they aren’t trying to be jeans either.

Frankly, I like the classic timeless look of these pants over the abc tech canvas pants.

How do they feel?

In one word: amazing. In two words: super amazing.

Our first impressions, the first time we wore these pants, we immediately prefer them over other similar products.

How lightweight are they?

They are SUPER lightweight (more so than other brands) and very breathable.

On top of that these bad boys are stretchy – just like their cousin, the kinetic pant (suit pants) and the Pace chinos (formerly called the ministry of supply momentum chino).

The pant is so stretchy and comfy, you will be surprised by it, actually.

Another brilliant feature: drawstrings!

Even more brilliant: the pant has a hidden comfort waistband that stretches AND a hidden drawstring in the waistband. What purpose does that hold?

Why the drawstring matters

Have you ever had stretchy pants that weren’t so stretchy by the end of the day? Sure they were more comfy, but you might have caught yourself pulling them up after several hours of wear.

That’s there the waist and drawstring come into play.

Can you see the drawstring?

Nope – it’s 100% hidden, something we were pleasantly surprised by in our review. Hidden inside the fabric is a drawstring that you can use to easily tighten the pants.

I hate when I feel like my pants have lost some stretch after wearing them all day. This is the perfect solution – it also helps if you have a tucked in shirt, too.

Classic Design

The Twill version of the kinetic pants also feature a classic 5 pocket design. 5 Pocket design is the traditional jean design with 2 pockets in front and two in back (with a small pocket inside the right pocket). Fun fact: The tiny pockets on jeans and other pants were created to house pocket watches. They were initially utilized with the original Levi’s “waist overalls” in 1890. People no longer use pocket watches, but the pockets live on.

The jeans also have a hidden zip compartment inside the back right pocket. This is perfect for travel if you are worried about pick-pockets.

No nonsense care

These pants are also super easy to care for, like other ministry of supply kinetic pants are, too. Simply put your pair in the washing machine, and machine wash cold with a gentle detergent. . Then hang dry or tumble dry low.

It’s that easy.

Do you need to iron?

It’s also wrinkle-resistant, so you can wear the kinetic pants right out of the suitcase without any issues whatsoever. You can use a cool iron if needed, but I’ve never had that issue since they are pretty wrinkle-resistant, like other Ministry of Supply products.

It’s a lab-tested, high-performance, high-tech pant that feels comfier than high tech. The Ministry of Supply Kinetic fabric is also tested to be long lasting like-new that doesn’t fade.

That’s the truth.

The one problem with the Ministry of Supply Kinetic Pant Twill

The only downside? These pants only come in waist sizes, not length sizes.

How they fit

I’m a 32 waist and 30 length in about every pair of pants (including other kinetic pant styles) and this kinetic pant ran a little long on me.

They probably fit more like a 32 x 32 – which is a more typical size. But I’ve got an odd-shaped body (long torso, shorter legs) and most of my pants have to be tailored to be flattering, anyway.

Not a deal killer at all for this version of the kinetic pant, but I would rather save a trip to the tailor, but not that big of a deal in the grand scale of things.

How to style the Ministry of Supply Kinetic Twill Pants

There are many ways to style these awesome stretch-friendly pants – let’s dive in.

Dress shirt, polo shirt or even a t-shirt

Styling this pant is pretty easy: dress it up with something like a dress shirt or polo (like the Apollo Polo). You could also pair it with a t-shirt. We like the Buck Mason T-shirts (read our Buck Mason T-Shirt Review) and Fresh Clean Tees Review, too.

The Ministry of Supply Kinetic Pant would also pair well with other t-shirts we’ve tested like True Classic (read about our True Classic Review and True Classic vs. Fresh Clean Tees).

In short, the Ministry of Supply Kinetic Pant goes with so many different types of style. Even though their clothes are high-tech they don’t look like it.

How not to style

Just don’t go too overboard with this fantastic stretch. I wouldn’t wear them with a shirt and tie, for example. An untucked dress shirt, sure – but tucked in shirt with dress shoes would just be pushing the style way to much – at least for our simple style in this review.

Are they a dress pant?

Nope. But they aren’t trying to be, either.

Once again, people are going to confuse these with dress pants, but they are nice.

I would also wear these with a pair of white sneakers for a super clean look.

The main difference between the Ministry of Supply Kinetic Twill Pants and the lululemon tech canvas pants is simple the overall look and feel. They are very similar in terms of overall technology but we greatly prefer the Kinetic Twill 5-Pockets pants over the tech canvas pants.

The Sirius ebike, is well, a serious eBike. Vvolt calls the Sirius eBike a trusted companion.

That’s because reliability is key when you’re venturing beyond where other vehicles can take you.

With plenty of torque and an internal transmission protected from the hazards of the trail, the Sirius is ready to search out new places or help you reach your favorite destinations with greater ease.

The super-basics

The integrated battery in this e bike.

The Sirius ebike has a 250 watt motor that’s powered by a 375wh battery. That might not sound like much compared to some of the other ebikes on the market, but trust us, this thing can move!

The single speed gearing means that there are no shifters or cables to get in your way, and the mid-drive motor provides plenty of power for climbing hills.

But one of the things that you’ll notice first is what the Sirius doesn’t have: gears (more on that in just a second) or even a throttle.

But lets dive deep into what makes the Vvolt Sirius super different: the mid drive motor, the Gates CDX Belt Drive and the Enviolo TR Rear Hub.

Mid-Drive Motor And Other Unique Features

At first glance, you might think this bike has a rear hub motor (because of the Enivolo hub, more in a second on that). However, the Sirius is equipped with a MPF Mid Drive Motor.

How Powerful is the motor?

This mid drive motor provides 250w of power (500w of peak power) to the belt drive.

What does this mean for you, the rider?

It means you’ll have no problem climbing hills, and you won’t even feel like you’re working that hard.

Plus, the motor is positioned low and center on the frame. This provides superior balance and weight distribution for a more comfortable ride.

Why did Vvolt choose a mid-drive motor?

I actually asked them this question directly, and they responded quickly!

The Sirius Mid Drive Motor has More torque: most mid drives produce 60-100nm of max torque, compared to the 30-50nm common on hub drives (although, we’ve tested som rear hub motors with more torque, see our RadRover 6 Review for more information).

The higher torque makes the eBikes quicker off the line, and able to climb more effectively for the rated motor power. Combined with the gear reduction offered by the drivetrain, this is how mid-drive motors with 250w nominal power can outperform hub motors with 500-750w power.

It’s also worth mentioning that most mid-drives are rated at 250w nominal power to conform with EU regulations, and lots of them can put out peak power in the 500+w range. For example, the Vvolt Sirius delivers something like 550w peak power to accompany the 80nm max torque.

Vvolt’s Sirius mid-drive motor is one of the most responsive on the market, thanks to its combination of torque, cadence and speed sensors. What this means for riders is that the motor feels “natural” in its response to input, making it feel like you have superpowered legs.

Vvolt’s response time is particularly impressive, with some riders likening it to “riding on a cloud.” Whether you’re looking for a boost up a hill or just want to enjoy a leisurely ride with less effort, Vvolt’s Sirius mid-drive can really make a difference.

Vvolt’s Sirius system is different than most hub motors on the market in that it delivers responsive power delivery, essentially not running as hard as a hub motor and making for more motor longevity. This is over the span of tens of thousands of miles, but in tandem with Vvolt’s generally higher quality builds, it makes their products built to last in a way that most hub drives can’t touch. With Vvolt, you’re getting a product that’s built to last, delivering responsive power that will keep you going for miles and miles.

What is a belt drive?

A belt drive bicycle has a strong nylon belt instead of a bike chain. The belt drives the rear wheel and is paired with tough stainless steel cogs and alloy chainrings. This results in a clean, long-lasting, and low-maintenance drive system – with no rear derailleur or need to shift gears at all. I

OK, but tell you more? Deal!

Belt drives are an essential piece of technology that we owe much of to the development of cars and motorbikes. A belt drive is a one-piece toothed belt that makes use of internal gearing, allowing many moving parts to be protected. This shifting mechanism for bikes can result in them being more durable and quieter than a conventional chain.

Belt Drive bicycles are becoming increasingly popular due to their many advantages over traditional chain-driven bikes. Belt drives are much cleaner and quieter than chains, and they require very little maintenance. Belt drives are also much stronger and more durable than chains, making them ideal for use in high-performance applications such as auto racing engines. In addition, belt drives are much lighter than chains, making them ideal for use in lightweight bicycles.

The only downside to belt drives is that they are more expensive than chain drives and it makes shifting a bit more complicated.

Gates CDX Belt Drive

Specifically the Vvolt Sirius has a Gates CDX Belt Drive. What’s that?

The Gates CDX belt drive is worry-free, meaning it’s practically maintenance free. No need to lube or adjust this drivetrain! The Gates Carbon belt is designed to last for years with little to no stretch. You can say goodbye to dropped chains and grease stains on your pants leg.

What about gears? The belt drive is a classic, “no actual gears” design. So what did Vvolt do instead?

The Enviolo Rear hub

If you have a single belt drive, a common method for allowing multiple gears on a bike is with an internally-geared hub. This system has the benefit that it is usually lower maintenance and there is less chance of something being damaged in an accident. Durability is usually very good.

Vvolt has chosen a highly-refined solution for the Sirius eBike; a unique, internally geared hub from Enviolo (to make matters even more confusing, the bike is branded as NuVinci but they recently changed their name). This is an internal geared hub in the rear wheel of the bike.

Why is this a big deal?

That means no more shifting or gears to mess with. A 100% stepless shifting experience – simply by using the twist shifter.

In fact, instead of gears, the Sirius eBike uses this little guy to show what “gear” you should be in.

Going up a hill? Make the guy look like he’s going up a hill to drop to a lower, easier gear. Want to be able to go even faster? The make the little guy look like he’s on a flat surface.

Make the little guy look like he’s going up hill to shift to an easier gear. Petty cool, huh?!

It’s that easy.

Other features and specs

While the eBike has some super unique features we’ve only seen on the Vvolt Sirius eBike, we’ve found some other great features that you only find on some select electric bikes.

Hydraulic Disc Brakes

First of all, it’s important to know: what are hydraulic disc brakes?

What are Hydraulic Brakes?

Hydraulic disc brakes are a type of brake that uses a sealed fluid system to transfer the braking force from the brake lever to the caliper. This force is then transferred to pistons inside the brake caliper (ceramic brake pads) which push the brake pads into the disc rotor – thus slowing the rotation of the rotor and the wheel with the ceramic brake pads hitting the disc rotor.

Hydraulics provide a superior level of performance and efficiency due to their lack of mechanical cables that are prone to wear, especially if they’re exposed to the elements.

Hydraulic disc brakes also offer more stopping power than other types of brakes, making them ideal for use in mountain biking and downhill racing. In addition, hydraulic disc brakes are easier to maintain and adjust than other types of brakes, making them a popular choice among cyclists.

Why don’t more bikes have Hydraulic Disc Brakes? Good question!

They are more expensive

They’re more difficult to maintain if they need servicing (even though they are more dependable).

Also, they can be hard to transport – can you imagine that you get a box for your electric bike and the hydraulic brake fluid is everywhere? That would SUCK!

Now that you know a bit more about the Vvolt Sirius eBike, let’s take a look at some of its other features and specs.

Finally, the Sirius eBike comes with a unique internally

Front Suspension

Not unique to the Sirius electric bike is the air sprung suspension fork.

The Vvolt Sirius electric bike has a suspension fork that offers 100mm of travel. This will help you ride over bumps and keep the bike more stable over bumps and uneven paths. The air spring can be adjusted to your weight and riding style with the on-board controls.

The suspension fork is a great addition to any electric bike, but it’s especially appreciated on the Sirius eBike. You can definitely take this e bike anywhere you’d use a regular mountain bike.

Things we didn’t care for: but (potentially not deal killers)

A fairly simple trip computer, but also, no throttle.

What is a throttle?

How hard is it to ride?

The torque sensor in this electric bike is honestly great – it’s like the torque sensor isn’t even there. Some folks have described having this powerful mid drive motor in a high gear is like sailing with super legs.

Most other ebikes have cadence sensors which feel more like a push. In contrast torque sensing pedal assist makes it feel like you your legs are more powerful.

In other words, it’s the smoothest pedal assist option there is.

Warp Core Upgrade

In the unit we tested, we had the warp core upgrade. What’s the warp core upgrade?
