Common name: Horseshoe crab
Scientific name: limulidae
Average lifespan: 20-40 years
Diet: Sea worms, small molluscs and crusteacens
Bio: Hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) are bled each year to produce a substance called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL). LAL is used to test intravenous drugs and medical equipment for the presence of bacteria and endotoxin, a poison found in many bacteria!
Their blood is blue and on the world market, a quart of horseshoe crab blood has a price tag of an estimated $15,000, leading to overall revenues from the LAL industry estimated at U.S. $50 million per year. But that pales in comparison to its value to the pharmaceutical industry!
Each major estuary along the coast has its own horseshoe crab population, distinguished from one another by size, colour and eye pigment!

Crinoids also known as Feather stars are marine animals that make up the class Crinoidea, one of the classes of the phylum Echinodermata, which also includes the starfish, brittle stars, sea urchins and sea cucumbers.
These creatures come in a great range of colors including some bright yellows and reds perhaps to ward off predators mistaking them to be poisonous. There are approximately 625 different species of feather stars, and are found in almost all the oceans and at all depths.

Vaquitas have never been hunted directly, but their population is declining, largely because of animals becoming trapped in illegal gillnets intended for capturing the totoaba, a large critically endangered fish of the drum family!
Tumblr media
The vaquita is a species of porpoise endemic to the northern part of the Gulf of California that is on the brink of extinction. Based on beached skulls found in 1950 and 1951, the scientific description of the species was published in 1958. As of March 2018 only about 12 individuals remain!

These guys are on the brink of extinction and aren’t very well known, they will not be around much longer!

The name ghost crab comes from its pale coloring and semitranslucent shell, in addition to its nocturnal habits. The ghost's crabs shell can reach a span of up to three inches, and males are typically larger than females. Its claws are white, and its eyestalks can rotate 360 degrees, Exorcist-style.
You can often spot ghost crabs at night, which is when they feed on other crabs, clams, lizards, insects and detritus. ... Ghost crabs will hibernate in their burrows during the winter, “holding their breath” for up to six weeks by storing oxygen in special sacs near their gills.
