sometimes the best fanfics are written by middle aged adults with years of writing experience who simply know how to craft a good story. but also sometimes the best fanfics are written by a sixteen year old girl with something deeply wrong with her

this isn't specific to anything, and i'm sure i've been guilty of it myself in the past, but, the argument of "blame the writer, not the character" when we discuss characters being ooc in comics fandom kind of falls apart if you take longer than two seconds to think about it. like, these are fictional characters ‒ everything about them can (and indeed has to) be attributed to their writers, both the characteristics you like and the ones you don't… there's no essence to the character(s) that exists independent of their writers. not to mention also this fails to consider situations involving the same writer being inconsistent.
"this is ooc in comparison to prior canon", "this is problematic against prior canon", "this is problematic in context" + "this is problematic put into the perspective of the character's marginalised identities", & "this has already been retconned" are far stronger, logical arguments imo.
(& before anybody cries semantics or goes "how is that different from saying blame the writer", i'm thinking of instances where, for example - a character has a consistent pattern of harmful behaviour which the fans ignore, b/c "this character would never, it's just the writers being x, y, and z" ‒ w no canon evidence to support the character being any other way but as they were written… an all too common phenomenon in comics fandom, which i just find. odd. yes, writer make fake people do thing. congratulations on figuring out how fiction works?)

I love artemis fowl bc the author decided to write about fairies who live underground & have magic, but the coolest thing about them by far is their super tech.
like yeah elves exist but more importantly they have laser weapons

General PSA for this blog:
I will never post a headcanon against the cowboy’s name change or ignoring it. If you don’t like the name change that is up to you, but on this blog the name change will be respected. You can send in headcanons about the name change, but if they are against it, or promoting the idea that “Cole Cassidy” was a name of a bad person from the cowboy’s past or anything along those lines, they will be deleted.

Wow I was really excited until I checked the overwatch tag and now I’m just dejected? I actually like the new Cole Cassidy name. My partner and I have always headcanons his middle name as Cassidy so it was cool to see it become in canon name. I don’t know what to do about my fics, if I should use the new name or keep using the old one like most people seem to be planning to do.
