what if, after all, regulus could swim?

we all know and love the hc/jokes about regulus drowning because he can't swim, but what if it was the complete opposite? what if regulus was a very strong swimmer, who was taught at a young age during the summers their family spent in france, on the coast of britany? what if regulus found peace in the sense of freedom that only water can give you? the feeling of being weightless, floating in the immensity of the ocean, of being everywhere and nowhere at once, both infinitesimal in the grand scheme of things and part of the whole entire universe? what if regulus fell in love with that feeling, and spent time swimming every chance he could get? what if he came to consider water as an ally, a friend even? a friend who, on that fateful day in the cave, stabbed him in the back and suddenly became cold, relentless and brutal? what if the water who made him feel like he could fly suddenly tried to drag him down, and instead of letting him be weightless made him heavy and sinking, its sweet caress becoming icy white hands gripping him harshly? what if regulus felt the only place he'd ever felt safe before slowly become his tomb, and the only thing that brought him joy turn into his killer? what if sirius never believed that regulus death wasn't purposeful because his brother wouldn't ever drown, not his little brother who spent his summers swimming and learning how to deal with even the most capricious waters? what if, after all, regulus could swim?

Even if he hates it, there are little things in Sirius that are just like his parents. You cannot help but become a little bit like those who raised you, even if you despise them. You cannot help but integrate those little bits and pieces to yourself, and recognise them in yourself, even if you wish you didn't. He smokes the same brand of cigarettes as his mother, because he nicked them from her first, and he never bothered to buy different ones. And he likes their taste better anyway. He hates that he knows every constellation by heart, but he hates it even more when inevitably, he finds Orion first. He still plays the piano sometimes, when there is nobody there to see, and the tunes that come to him are the ones Walburga favoured. He holds glasses of alcohol lazily, like it could fall out of his hand at any moment, because Orion held them that way too, and without even realising it, the mannerism was engraved in him. And when he's a little too drunk, it's always French that escapes his lips, remnants of conversations with his parents. He never lost his table manners, and unless he is making a conscious effort not to, he eats just like he was taught. But the one thing Sirius hates the most about this is his anger. His words are sharp and designed to cut just like his mother's were, his voice dark and falsely composed like his father's, and Sirius cannot get angry without scaring himself. And in those moments he has to say to himself, repeatedly, that he is not them. Just pieces of them. Because you cannot help but become a little bit like those who raised you, even if you despise them. But you can chose what you do of this little bit.
