You’d never been to see the cherry blossoms. The season always seemed to pass you by, but Iida was more than happy to take you to see your first. Both of you spent the day taking tours, learning of their history, chuckling and enjoying the themed treats as he indulged in your every cute whim under the soft spring sun—but it wasn’t hand in hand, not like the other couples.

Every time his square fingers tried to brush up on yours you moved away. Every time he stared into your eyes for too long you’d turn to direct his attention elsewhere in a poorly hidden maneuver. Nearly every time he wanted to touch you, place an adoring kiss anywhere on you, and it wasn’t like Iida was a touchy person in the first place, it’s just that you made his heart feel so full and him so at ease and accepted for once and yet you still denied everything he tried to give you after all this time.

As you sat on the bench with him accompanied by a noticeable space you noticed his drooped shoulders and twitching arrow eyebrow which served to make yours furrow. “Hey Iida, are you feeling alright? If you’re getting tired we can alwa-“

“What’s wrong with me?”

You blinked and tried blocking out the noisy crowd around you to tune in. “Sorry, what-“

“What am I doing wrong? It feels like we’ve been together for as long as I can remember and yet nothing’s changed.”

“You’re going to have to elaborate, I don’t know-“

“I promise I don’t want to force you, or make you feel uncomfortable, but it’s so hard to keep these feelings to myself. I care about you so much, why won’t you let me show you?” His hands were pinched together, face leaned over into them so he stared at the warm stone dotted with fresh and wilted petals as if trying to count them all.

A chill washed over your being as you realized what he meant and it froze you in place. “Iida,” your hand came shy of his shoulder as your body stopped despite your mind screaming at it to go forward just this once, but the disconnect remained, cemented just as you were. “Iida please, look at me.”

“Why? it’s not like you ever wanted me to before!” It seemed like he wasn’t expecting his voice to raise either as he tensed in his seat.

Your eyes darted all around, as if searching him for answers since you didn’t have any of your own. In your peripheral you noticed people beginning to look at the scene as they passed and it made you shudder like the trees shadowing above. “Can we please go somewhere to talk about this,” you spoke in a rushed whisper.

He didn’t respond. You stayed as still as possible to not draw any more attention to yourself as the seconds tore away at you both, you didn’t shake him or touch his back or do anything that would’ve helped him. You couldn’t give him anything but words; it was all you were ever good at, all you ever knew, anyway. “Iida, please-“

“I thought I was the singularity.” Somehow his voice was flat and shaky at the same time. It was the quietest you’d ever heard iida, almost drowned out and carried away by the breeze that picked up, “If I can’t get you to open up… if I can’t even earn the trust of the person that matters most… then what good am I as a hero.” You were so taken aback by it that you didn’t even react when he stood up, not even as he breathed slow and deep to regain his composure. “I think it’s time i give you some space.”

Your voice caught in your throat and you didn’t stop him. “Tenya,” you finally croaked out after he’d already gone. Vision focusing on where he once was, you tried your best to harden your face, but the sun began peeking out from behind the clouds. It was blinding and you were forced to squint. The tears that had welled up finally sprung free and plopped onto your face as you now sobbed openly at how pathetic you were. Your world blurred into a sickening, blotchy, blushing mess, and amongst the racing thoughts and your thudding heart you wondered how could you ever enjoy the cherry blossoms again.
