I just caught up with The Rookie starting Nathan Fillion? Holy hell there’s a ton of Whump for his character John Nolan in general, but in s4e7 it was incredible! Just a taste: abduction, beating, rope restraints, stabbing, drugging, disorientation....
I’m veeeery behind on the Rookie (still on season 1 lol) but yes! Nathan Fillion has some crazy good whump in it! I’ve watched a whole bunch of his whumpy episodes and they’re so good!! 4x07 looks amazing and I haven’t watched it yet but I’ve seen some gifsets and wowee!! Amazing. And there’s good whump for other characters throughout the Rookie too like Tim Bradford. Damn is the Bradford whump good.

I was tagged by @louwitcher (thank you!) for the "5 top comfort characters". Well... you know comfort in my case means those characters get hurt on a regular basis? :) (Not ONLY, of course. But if that happens, it's the icing on the cake). So, here are five, but ranking them 1-5 doesn't mean I prefer one of them over the others.
Buck (911)
Tumblr media
2. Tim Bradford (The Rookie)
Tumblr media
3. Malcolm Bright (Prodigal Son)
Tumblr media
4. Merlin (Merlin)
Tumblr media
5. Marbod (Barbaren / Barbarians)
Tumblr media
That was fun! You wanna play, go ahead! Additionally tagging if they want to: @keyrousse, @tigerlyla-of-metinna, @valandhirwriter, @humbaeae, @stillness138, @how-much-for-a-whump, @liz-regis-favorite-raven, @dettlaffxregisxgeralt, @katiecat446 and since I bet I forgot a million of you, please just go ahead.

Better late than never?! ;)
Hey all,
I thought I’d post this here, since quite a few of the posts seem to be about a shared love of fanfic - particularly of the whump variety.
So…as usual, I’m late to the party - but better late than never, I guess?
Anyway, in case anybody actually cares…I have FINALLY hopped on board the whump fanfiction train.
My desire to get a ticket started off when I was about twelve or so, I guess, and my family decided to introduce me to the marvel that is ‘50s-‘60s western series: chiefly 'Bonanza’ and 'Rawhide’. It took less than five minutes for the whump to hit me (brace yourselves for a cringeworthy simile!) …you guessed it, like a train. I mean - cutiepie Michael Landon as Little Joe Cartwright everytime he got hurt/shot/beaten up?
Tumblr media
And a young Clint Eastwood as ramrod Rowdy Yates (who knew he had such a baby face?!?!) that time everyone thought he’d contracted anthrax?
Tumblr media
Fanfic emerged as a matter of course - first as something confined solely to the boundaries of my imagination, and then, gradually, as hasty, half-formed scribblings stashed away in the bottom drawer of my desk - seemingly fated never to see the light of day. I’d never heard of online sites where people just like me put up these thoughts and stories for others to read - and then, one fateful day in Grade 8, my best friend told me about a little thing called 'fanfiction.net’.
It was like the world opened up (not at all an overdramatic statement, I assure you!). All of a sudden, here was an entire virtual library of stories - ranging from pointed paragraphs to full novels - about my beloved characters…which not only included the Cartwright family and the Gil Favor drive, to my delight, but also Sherlock Holmes…Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin…the entire IMF team (original Mission: Impossible, anyone?)…David Janssen’s Dr. Richard Kimble ('The Fugitive’)…Obi-Wan Kenobi…Captain Jack Sparrow…and so many others.
At first I gravitated to fics that contained only characters I knew…but I soon branched out by browsing through the works and favorited stories/authors of my favorite writers. For example, I discovered a heretofore unknown love for LOTR through fanfiction - for which I must thank the very talented writing team of Cassia and Siobhan - and along with it, a passion for the previously-ignored Legolas:
Tumblr media
As I matured, so did the nature of the fanworks I sought to read…and here I faced my first real quandary - my own writing wasn’t good enough! Fanfiction wasn’t merely a frivolous pastime, I had realized - for the serious authors, there was a drive to achieve a certain realism, an emotional depth, that I had erroneously thought could only be found in classic published literature. And things didn’t always have to get physical, either. Writers like geekmama, honorat (Pirates of the Caribbean), librophile, ruth baulding (Star Wars), St. Crispins (Man from U.N.C.L.E.), Thundera Tiger, telemachus and consumptive_sphinx from AO3, which I discovered only a few years ago (LOTR and Tolkien’s writings), and many, many more could torture and turn their characters into wrecks without laying a figurative finger on them…
These were people who wrote whump with style.
For several years, as a result, I was a silent participant in fanfic - remaining a reader only. The scant few works that I’d begun posting I either took down or left unfinished…
And then, in November of 2014, inspiration hit. In fifteen minutes I typed up what I understand is called a 'drabble’…and posted my first ever complete fanwork. It was for the 'Star Wars’ prequel trilogy, and I called it 'Travels’ (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10811942/1/Travels). I asked for reviews - and got them! People actually liked what I had to say!
I tried writing again - and again, and again. My first attempts turned into the beginnings of novel-length stories that were destined never to be completed.
I grew discouraged…until I went back to basics. What had made 'Travels’ successful? Its simplicity - a focus on a single, overarching concept, and a setting limited to a brief moment in time. With that in mind, I sallied forth once more - and came up with 'Prima Facie’ (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11637656/1/Prima-Facie-The-Scarlet-And-The-Ivory) and 'Rift’ (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10897388/1/Rift). Much later, after discovering Tim Burton’s films, came a fic for 'Sleepy Hollow’ called 'Before the Half-Shut Eye’ (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12900323/1/Before-The-Half-Shut-Eye).
I had discovered my strengths as a writer - character study and introspection - rather than extensive plot development…as always, it goes without saying, grounded in whump.
And then, last year…I finally watched 'The Hobbit’…
The rest, as they say…is history.
Move over, Legolas - I want more of pretty elf-boy’s prettier dad!
And did I get it…watching the behind the scenes videos on YouTube, I wound my way to:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ALL ABOARD FOR LEE PACE!
What’s not to love? The drop-dead gorgeousness…the versatility…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
…And, oh my sweet LORD - the potential for whump:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Consider this: I’ve written the same complete fanfics just from December 2018 that I wrote over the course of four years - every single one of them for Lee Pace characters. Two are for 'The Fall’ - 'Scraps of Orange Peel’ (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13220805/1/Scraps-of-Orange-Peel) and 'Persephone’ (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13151538/1/Persephone), one is for 'Halt and Catch Fire’ - 'Logic Error’ (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13269415/1/Logic-Error), and one is a (rather dark?) reworking of another author’s fantastically sad 'Pushing Daisies’ all-normal AU - 'Baker’s Dozen or Life in Twenty-Six Parts’ (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13199725/1/Baker-s-Dozen-or-Life-in-Twenty-Six-Parts)…which also happens to be, hands-down, the longest piece I’ve ever attempted.
And, if my brain has anything to say about it, there seem to be plenty more to come.
Hey, what can I say? Lee makes for the perfect muse.
Besides…how can you say no to this smile?

small appreciation post for collapsing while still conscious
ok as much as i love a good faint im also a huge sucker for when a character collapses but is still conscious, maybe just dizzy or weak
stumbling or tripping on something and falling to their knees, too weak to stand up again
weak from fever or low blood sugar and failing to get out of a chair, lying on their back or side while the dizziness subsides (i actually had a fic planned for this at one point)
slumping into a chair because they cant stand anymore
reaching out to a table or wall for support and sliding to the floor (!!!)
sitting on the floor already but they slump to the side out of exhaustion
that thing where they throw their arm across their eyes out of exhaustion or dizziness (honestly one of my favorites)
there are probably a lot more im missing rn so feel free to add on!!

Hey friend, I'll give you the same recs I gave Whumpypepsigal (love y'alls whump blogs!)
One Day on netflix- so much whump, and well done, too. Mostly emotional, but some physical, specifically episodes 5, 12, and 14. A little in each but mostly in those episodes. I want to see these actors in so much more. Both of them can CRY man, like, seriously their tears physically hurt.
And Southland, its available to buy but its also free on Tubi. Whump wonderland- physical, mental, emotional, and also just freaking brilliant. Develops its characters and gets darker as it goes along. Mostly male whump but some lady whump. Hurt/comfort, breakdowns, tears/sobbing, major character deaths, injuries, addiction- holy cow. And brilliantly done. Shawn Hatosy, Ben Mckenzie, Micheal Cudlitz, and many more. Hot damn. You gotta check it out. AND IT WAS CANCELLED in its 5th season and ends on a damn cliffhanger. It could have gone on for many more seasons. Season 3 is the best for whump though- all the seasons are, but I swear like every single episode has some form of very well done whump. Enjoy!
Thanks for the recs!!! I've heard of One Day or at least I've seen pepole talking about it on tumblr when the show was released and it looks like a tearjerker from people's reactions. But oooooh I love me some good emotional whump and they're good criers???? SIGN ME UP!
I think I've heard of Southland! Never seen it and I don't know anything about it lol but that sounds great! Love Ben Mckenzie so I'd check it out for him for sure. AH cancelled with a cliffhanger!? That's the worst!!

HIIII
I’m currently not watching anything new, but AM going through a book phase??? (Haven’t finished a book in years, so thank you audiobooks and also probably Vyvanse?) Also I’m pretty sure some came from a rec post here???
I’d say that all of these books have:
- a focus on found family (!!!!)
- an angsty/whumpable male main character
- some hurt/comfort for said mc
- fantasy/magic with (imo) good world building
and are NOT driven by romance (anything that is there is side-plot), and do not include graphic sexual content (or, at least, it was insignificant enough for me to ignore it - same goes for the listed tropes, really - I was able to read with my fav trope blinders on, which doesn’t mean other stuff wasn’t there, but I can’t say that for every book)
1. Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom (Kaz)
2. A Darker Shade of Magic/A Gathering of Shadows (Kell)
3. Dark Rise/Dark Heir (Will)
4. Sword Catcher (Kel)
(Why do they all have single syllable names mostly starting with K and ending with L?)
ANYWAY highly recommend (in order, from 1-4), and would love to know if you (or any followers) have recs for fic (of the above) OR other books that check the boxes (esp if heavy on the comfort!!)
THANKS!
BLESS YOU!!!! I love getting book recs especially fantasy books with little sex/romance!!! That's super rare nowadays so I thank you! I recently finished reading both Fourth Wing and Iron Flame and loved them both (despite them being very romance heavy I found that I didn't mind it at all and really enjoyed the world and the story) and now I'm eager for some more fantasy books to read. Thank you for the recs!! I'll go give them a look!
I have posted some Kaz whump fic recs in the past so I recommend you check out my Shadow and Bone tag for those. If anyone has fic recs for the others on the list please reply with your favs!!
As for other recs may I offer a few of my favorites? The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, The Ranger Apprentice books by John Flanagan, The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke.

I saw a gorgeous edit made by @captainbucky-yt of a specific still from Medici, but done as The Weeping Monk and when I tell you this had a CHOKEHOLD on me until I drew/wrote it... I went a rewatched that scene to purely to take stills and not because its whumpy as heck in order to draw this because I found myself inspired.
I never draw people you can tell and this is a completely new style for me since I usually draw traditionally and digitalise finished art but I wanted something more... unrefined for this. I never digitalise drawings of people/figures but hey I tried! Yes I have ADHD no I havent had my meds in months why do you ask?
ANYWAY ENJOY;
CRACK!
He closes his eyes as the whip splits his skin, again and again the whip bites greedily into his flesh.
The knotted lengths of brown leather are already stained dark, whilst rivers of crimson begin to carve their way down the scarred terrain of Lancelot's back. He's been at this for a good ten minutes already. Genuine tears have begun to follow the Ashen red marks across his cheeks, but his mind is still blown full of turmoil and refuses to clear for the sting of his rent flesh. With a snarl, he raises his arm once more.
CRACK!
He can't help it now, he winces, carefully stoic mask slipping away with each and every lash of the whip until he's left panting, whimpering, gritting his teeth against the pain. He chokes back a tormented sob.
CRACK!
Through pain we are cleansed, and our sinful souls are saved... but the pain brings no clarity anymore. Where once he found solace, now he feels only despair.
CRACK! Faithless, without direction.
CRACK! Lost, without purpose.
CRACK! Alone, with no one left to turn to...
Brother! You can fight! The voice of Gawain, The Green Knight echoes in his mind, and despite himself he falters. The eyes that should have shown him hatred instead offer him a kindness he has never known before. You could be our greatest warrior...
The whip lies bloody at his feet. He takes a trembling breath, the hot copper scent of his own blood heavy in the air...
...And but a few moments later, he finds his mind made up. His salvation is not in murdering Fey, it's in saving them.
"You must have the will to do what is necessary... Do you have the will, my son?"
And thus he replies;
"Yes, Father..."
- I'm not sure if the writing was inspired by the art, or the art inspired the writing, but enjoy the longest caption to an art piece EVER...
