April 5-6, 2024 - a character on 9-1-1 came out so of course it's Supernatural that trends.
9-1-1, a show about Los Angeles first responsers which started airing in 2018, has just begun its season 7. The 100th episode aired on April 4 and it was another win for bisexuals, as one of the characters, Buck, was kissed on the lips by another man and you can see his reaction on this gifset: [here].
Be it in celebration and support or bittersweet envy and crushed dreams, this seemingly caused for Supernatural to land on the second spot on the trending page.
It was probably the mixture of the destiel meme [x] and people including the two shows within the same posts [x] [x], possibly aided by today's being the 5th of the month. Regardless, the destiel shippers observing the happenings seem to be happy for all 9-1-1 fans whilst incoherent destiel screams are filling their minds.
Big thanks to everyone who commented on this post with the info and the anons, I thought I was losing my mind.

March 5-7, 2024 - it just happens sometimes.
Supernatural has been trending on and off since March 5. At first glance it doesn't appear like anything major happened, which had people a bit baffled, including yours truly.
It looks like there's been a surge in general spn posting (there's been quite a lot of art appearing as well), with potential organised effort into tempting the universe. What's more, an additional timestamp was published for Ninety One Whiskey by komodobits, a very well-known destiel fanfic from 2016, which had been posted as a commission for Rally for Palestine [x] [x], and which got people posting as well. Not to mention that the confusion about the trend likely caused people to post even more about Supernatural, trying to find out what kind of disaster had happened this time, which would've contributed to the tag appearing.
Or maybe it's just yet another time when Supernatural trends just to disturb the peace and remind people of its existence. Wouldn't be the first time.
Big shoutout to @goldrushzukka, @destieldisaster, and @casismybestfriend for the information, this one had me confused [x].

February 14, 2024 - Supernatural is back on the third destiel wedding anniversary.
Three years ago destiel shippers threw Dean and Castiel a wedding which was celebrated both on the Hellsite (affectionate) and the Hellsite (derogatory). All of that unfolded after the chaos caused by Supernatural actors role-playing a Roadhouse party on Twitter. These were the beautiful times of chaos.

January 9, 2024 - It looks like Taylor Swift may have caused Supernatural to trend.
It is the year of our Lord Godstiel 2024 and yet Supernatural is trending alongside Taylor Swift and Misha Collins.
Whilst the trend may just be the universe recalibrating itself, it looks like it may have started with Taylor Swift. Apparently there've been some discussions about what would happen if Taylor Swift came out as straight [x] [x], though don't quote me on that, as I'm not up-to-date on the Taylor Swift news. She was however trending earlier today with Misha Collins as a secondary tag [x].
This may have then brought back the memories of Misha Collins' coming out as straight back in 2022 [x] [x]. The posts gained some traction, and alsongside some general spn posting and the news of Our Flag Means Death cancellation announced through the destiel meme [x] [x], this appears to have impacted the trend. In addition, some people have been commenting on Jensen's apparent hopes for a Supernatural reboot which definitely helped boost the tag [x] (no announcements here, just discussions, but maybe one day).
However, this is mostly a theory and sadly, I do not have a ✨straight✨ answer today.

November 6-7, 2023 - The celebration continues.
Destiel continues trending amidst the annual November 5 mass hysteria. Previous posts here: [x] [x].
A brief panic was caused by the (as of yet unconfirmed) information suggesting that another season of Supernatural or a movie is in the works [x] [x]. CW Supernatural's Instagram profile has posted a short clip with a caption "And the story continues.. #Supernatural" [x]. The profile however regularly posts clips and photos, so fear not, this doesn't appear to be happening yet and may be simply a misunderstanding (I would love to see the day this happens though, if only to witness the chaos).
Yesterday, all the destiel posting caused for the "November 5" tag to trend separately from the main destiel tag. Today, the trend dropped from the first place and it looks like it might be quieting down. Till next year of course, with many other Supernatural trends until then. This is a Supernatural fan site after all.

November 5, 2023 - If you know, you know. If you don't, log off now and save yourself.
It's been 16 years [x] since the WGA strike of 2007 set a chain of events that led to Castiel the angel saying he loved Dean Winchester and promptly dying exactly 13 years later on the night of November 5, 2020, nowadays known as the destielputinelection night.
It's been three years. For some, the night of November 5, 2020 has become no more than a blur of chaos, whilst for others, the memories of that day remain as vivid and raw as back then, even three years later.
It's time to make peace with the fact that there will be no peace. The ghost of destiel has not left and has contaminated the internet, going so far as to causing Supernatural to trend solely because of the use of the Destiel meme to convey the news [x] [x] [x].
Just this morning, it contributed to Putin trending on the hellsite alongside BBC Sherlock.
At this point we might as well just accept our fate.

September 25 and 27, 2023 - The Destiel Meme does it again [x].
It's not the first time that the use of the destiel meme to share news causes Supernatural to trend, but it is nontheless entertaining to see. This time, it's following the news of possible end and success of the WGA strike following a tentative agreement [x] [x].
The details are being finalized, but the news is being shared across the social media platforms. On Tumblr, this means the destiel meme. A few hours ago, as the "wga strike" tag trended, "destiel" was included as a secondary tag (screenshot below). It looks like it's evolved into a separate trend now.

Can you explain cas and the writer's strike thing?
With pleasure.
On November 5, 2007 (yes, you read the date correctly), the Writers Guild of America strike begins. Supernatural season 3 just started airing and the strike poses a bit of an issue, as at that point only the episodes up to 12th (Jus in Bello) have been written. In the original version, Sam was supposed to save Dean from going to hell by completely giving into his powers. But now there's no time to do that. There are some ideas thrown around, like ending the season/series on Mystery Spot and maybe making a film after. Eventually, four more episodes are shot and season 3 ends on 16 episodes with Dean being dragged to hell in the finale.
Now they need to do something about it. Despite the initial plans to leave the angels out of Supernatural, a decision is made to have Dean saved by one (and to make them more acceptable for Kripke, let's make them dicks that plot to start the Apocalypse). So they sign one Misha Collins for three episodes to do the job (the reason why he lowered his voice was because he'd thought he'd only be in three episodes, he openly regretted that decision later on, understandably so). Fans fall in love. So they keep him. They try to kill him off a few times, but each time the fans demand Castiel come back.
Fast forward 11 seasons and Supernatural 15x18 Despair airs on November 5, 2020. Exactly 13 years after the strike. After years of denying Destiel's existence, Castiel The Angel Of The Lord confesses his love for Dean Winchester. The internet breaks, Destiel trends above the US election and rumors about Putin's resignation. There's a new influx of fans, many of those who stopped watching are coming back. Supernatural renaissance. Nine months later Destiel hits 100k fics on AO3 as a first ship in the history of the site.
One of the most fascinating phenomena in television that started with a strike.

it's the fifteenth anniversary of the episode 4x01 lazarus rising so it's only fitting for spn to rise from the dead. essentially 15 years since castiel first appeared on the show. why it's trending in first place - i have no idea unfortunately, i would love to know the exact mechanics though

September 18, 2023 - Supernatural trends on the anniversary of Lazarus Rising and Castiel's first appearance on the show.
Fifteen years ago, on September 18, 2008, the first episode of Supernatural season 4 aired and completely changed the trajectory of the show with the appearance of Castiel. Angels hadn't even been supposed to be in the show, but the WGA strike (Nov 5, 2007 - Feb 12, 2008) had forced the season 3 to end with Dean going to hell and someone had to drag him out of there. Enter Castiel [x].
He was supposed to appear, stay for three episodes, and disappear. As we all know, that didn't exactly go as planned and here we are, 15 years later, coincidentally in a middle of another strike.

August 24-25, 2023 - Supernatural continues to trend following the most recent episode of The Rogue Translator tale, which had started almost three years ago and yet here we are [x].
Since yesterday, Destiel has been trending after posts from a Tumblr user stating that she'd been informed by the translator involved in the Spanish dub of Supernatural 15x18 episode that Dean's reciprocation must've been in the script as he wouldn't generally add lines [x].
This caused chaos as people started posting and bringing back theories, whilst others have been comparing this to previous information on the subject stating otherwise, including information from the voice actor that the line had been added to the Spanish dub despite not having been in the original script or the released version(s) of the script for the episode not including the line [x] [x] [x] [x].
The trend might've been boosted by the news of Chandrayaan-3's successful Moon landing [x], Putin-related news [x], Trump's mugshots [x], and Riverdale finale [x], all of which used the destiel meme to announce their respective news, which might've helped with keeping the trend up.
