Managed to fit a short, 3.15 km ride in before Shakira's session today. Abba was on her toes and very looky, and spooked as soon as I put the camera away, because she doesn't approve of wattles. She then suggested that she might spook at the cows and newborn calves, and when I vetoed that, she offered to spook at the pylons. I landed up walking her back in hand because I did not have the breath to hold her spooky self together on the downhill.
Hackney pony Piece of Perfection, a/k/a “Flash” competed in the Tevis Cup 100 mile endurance race, with his 13 year old owner/rider, Kyla Law. The Tevis Cup requires the horse/rider combination to complete 100 miles within 24 hours.
Kyla and Flash competed with her mother, Natalie Law riding Mo Motion Jack, a registered American Saddlebred. In the wee hours of Saturday morning, the duo swung up on their steeds to begin the 100 mile journey, starting by Lake Tahoe and ending in Auburn, California. The trails are hot, dusty, smokey & rugged. Many miles were traveled in the dark. 133 teams started this journey, and 63 teams crossed the finish line on time (by 5:15). Kyla and Natalie crossed the finish line at 4:33am Sunday morning in 36th and 37th place.
Piece Of Perfection is a 12 year old 11.2 hand Hackney pony gelding bred by Don and Allison Deardorff. He is the second and the smallest Hackney pony EVER to compete in the Tevis Cup!
Please join us in congratulating both Kyla Law and “Flash” and her mother, Natalie Law and “Brave” on this outstanding and amazing accomplishment.
Endurance racing is not for the faint of heart, or mind or body. If you compound that with an animal who cannot talk to you, it adds to the challenge. But challenge is what drives endurance racers and riders. Endurance riding is a popular sport in the horse world that is dominated by Arabian horses. Some riders, however, prefer wild horses because the horses are natural trail horses who possess the stamina, intelligence and toughness to do these races. Do not worry, unlike other types of horse racing, endurance horses must pass several veterinary examinations and get several rest stops during the races, which can last as long as 24 hours.
Our first ride towards the virtual Tevis Cup! We warmed up Chicken and his person, then took them out on the trails. He was great, she was anxious. We'll keep working on it.
The Kelpies, located in Falkirk, tower a colossal 30 metres above the Forth and Clyde Canal and form a dramatic gateway to the canal entrance on the East Coast of Scotland. Created by Scotland's leading sculptor Andy Scott, The Kelpies are a monument to horse powered heritage across Central Scotland.
Some details of the Kelpies, each structure contains approximately 18,000 individual pieces. There is over 1.5 miles of steel in each structure. They each weigh over 300 tonnes and sit on 1,200 tonne foundations. Each structure has 464 steel plates In a monumental feat of engineering, The Kelpies rose from the ground in just 90 days, in late 2013.
Nearly one million people visited the Kelpies sculptures in Falkirk in the first year, since then the visitor numbers have declined, but still have numbers of over 500,000 a year
Some people criticise the cost of The Kelpies, said to be around £5 million, to me it is justified, it does bring a lot of people into the area of Falkirk in general, and are we to be the generation that forgets about public art just because of the costs? I love them and have visited them to many times to remember of the years, I may not be in Falkirk now, but I will take a trip to The Helix again and grab more pics, enjoy a coffee and take in the views over to The Ochils.
This saturday the Helix is hosting a tenth party to celebrate their birthday, the day event is free for all to attend and includes a producers market, face painters, Clydesdale Horse Demonstrations, Pipe Bands and much more. The evening event is ticked and you have performances by Rebecca Vasmant, Callum Beattie, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, and much more., there are still some tickets available.
The last three pics were taken by myself on this day 2020.
