Charms had always been my favourite class, which I guess everybody knew since it was the one class where I always had my same seat that nobody would ever sit in. Though perhaps that had more to do with the person who occupied the seat besides mine than my actual seat.
Regulus had started sitting next to me in charms two years ago, we hardly ever spoke apart from when we would exchange small pleasantries. Even through silence, I began to learn things about Regulus by his actions. For example, I knew he secretly despised noting in cursive but did it anyway for reasons I didn’t know. Sometimes I would catch him writing in print, but it would always be rewritten in perfect cursive by next lesson. I had also learnt that if it wasn’t an A it was a fail, but he only thought that way for himself. There was many times he had caught my B- score and congratulated me with no trace of sarcasm or malice.
Regulus also preferred the colder weather. On hot days, when the rest of the class would shed their robes and roll up the sleeves of their shirts his sleeves would stay cuffed at his wrists, much to the dismay of myself, who also knew a hot and bothered Regulus meant a cranky Regulus, who would spent the entirety of class tapping his quill against the wood of the desk and kicking his leg under the desk.
“You coming to the party tonight Eleanora? We’ve conjured up a few new spells and let’s just say it’s going to go off with a bang.”
Marlene McKinnon and Sirius Black had been making their rounds of the classroom inviting every student who wasn’t a slytherin.
“Sorry brother it’s nothing personal, green just doesn’t go with the party theme.”
The other thing I had learnt about Regulus, was that when something had affected him more than he’d care to admit, he’d roll his eyes and put his head down to the paper as if he was too busy to care anyway.
Something in my heart jumped when he did this now. I knew it was none of my business to meddle in Black Family drama but I couldn’t help feel a little bad for the youngest of the two.
“Actually.. I think I might give tonight a miss guys. Good luck with your fireworks though.”
Marlene looked taken back, as if nobody had ever to her face declined an invitation, which to be fair they mostly hadn’t. Sirius on the other hand looked confused.
“How’d you know it was fireworks?”
Marlene rolled her eyes and dragged him away to the next table.
We fell back into studying quickly as if the distraction had never even occurred. Regulus was writing in print today, which meant he had a busy night ahead of him re writing everything.
“Why aren’t you going?”
His voice startled me, causing me to drop my quill and smear ink through the page of my notes. It seemed I would also be up late tonight re writing.
“Pardon?”
Regulus put his quill away and faced me in his chair. I hadn’t noticed until both our faces were turned towards each other just how close we sat. We were certaintly close enough to whisper and still hear one another as though we were yelling into a microphone.
“Why aren’t you going to the party?”
“Well green means go right? So if there’s no green why would I go?”
Regulus smiled and placed his thumb on his chin, gently rubbing it and whispering an Ahh of understanding as he did so.
His smile quickly faded into seriousness once more and I found him staring at my Hufflepuff tie as I had yesterday.
“So what are you doing tonight?”
He raised his eyes slowly to meet mine, a slight pink hue marking his cheeks.
“Just studying.”
My words came out husky and crackled which I had not intended on. Regulus had me in a trance and I think he knew it.
“Astronomy Tower, 8pm.”
And then the bell went. And Regulus was gone.

It all started with a look.
Just one silly look and he had me flustered, heat rapidly rising to my cheeks exposing my foolishness.
Louis, Sam and I had decided on an impromptu picnic study sesh on the quidditch field seeing as there wasn't any training today and the field would be practically deserted, or so we thought. It seemed that with the surprisingly nice weather today had spring on us, everyone had conjured the same idea to study on the field.
The Marauders were here - of course - but we had expected them to be. Marlene, Mary and Dorcas lounged on the benches, throwing books in each other's faces and laughing as James Potter and Sirius Black competed to best each other with their flying skills. Remus and Lily sat on the floor behind the girls, actually studying.
We had chosen a spot to set up our picnic on the eastern side of the field, slightly away from the chaos of the Marauders whilst still staying close enough for Louis to appreciate the beauty of James and Sirius in their quidditch uniforms.
I had supplied cherrys for the picnic, as they were my personal favourite snack. Louis and Sam had both sighed, calling me predictable as I pulled the container of them from my bag. Louis had bought pizza crisps and Sam had spent the morning baking his special cookies. In the know Hufflepuffs had began approaching us the moment Sam had sat down and unzipped his bag, offering money in exchange for one of the cookies.
Louis ate for free of course, as per the rules of best friendship. I passed on mine for today, not feeling like fading out on such a lovely day. It didn't take long before Louis and Sam had forgot about studying all together, instead opting to holding their hands up to the sky and imagining if they were birds.
Too out of it to continue to sell the cookies, I took over from Sam as the supplier. Word spread across the field at a rapid rate that the Hufflepuffs were selling again, and eventually even the Marauders were lining up for a cookie.
Thankfully, cookies weren't ever lasting and finally we had run out of our stash. I apologised to the students still in line and told them Sam would bake again soon, but one Ravenclaw boy wasn't budging, accusing me of still having supply left. He began getting pushy and aggressive, and I cursed myself for letting Louis and Sam nap.
"She said no."
I hadn't noticed he was on the field until now, his jet black hair was dangling over his eyes and his white button up sleeves were rolled up to his elbows. The Ravenclaw boy had backed away as soon as he saw who had come to my rescue, scurrying away like a rat with a mumble of a sorry.
"Thankyou."
Regulus shrugged his shoulders as he piled his hands into his pockets, playing it off as no big deal. His eye caught sight of the boys and his eyebrow raised curiously, a smile framing his face.
"Are they asleep?"
He already knew the answer by Sam's soft snores as he tucked his head into Louis' neck.
Whenever Regulus and I had spoken, I always sensed that he liked to continue conversations without admitting to someone that he enjoyed talking to them. This refusal would lead him to asking questions he already knew the answers to, grabbing at anything he could to speak more. I kept my observations to myself of course.
"I'm giving them one more hour before I hex a rain cloud above them."
Regulus tilted his head and allowed himself to laugh, to which I joined him in my own soft giggle.
He kept his head down even after the laughter had fallen off his tongue, even his smile disappeared after a while, leaving an expressionless Regulus standing there clearly caught up in his own thoughts.
And then he looked at me.
Like really looked at me.
I could feel the heat rising to my cheeks, staining them pink. I felt like time had stopped and I was incaple to move as his eyes dipped lower and began to scan down my body, halting on my Hufflepuff tie for just a moment and then starting again, only to drag his whole head up with him as his eyes moved back to catch on mine. From my seat on the ground to his six foot frame in the sky my already big eyes woud have looked bigger, more doe like than usual. He ran his tongue over his lip, wetting it in preparation to speak.
But as fate would always have it, an interruption came first. In the form of Barty Crouch Jr.
"Regulus! Let's go."
We both looked over to where the yelling had come from, a pile of Slytherins were by the exit, most staring at Regulus wondering what was taking so long. Regulus sighed and gave them a quick nod, indicating he planned to leave any second now.
"See you around Ella?"
I creased my brows in confusion, had he really just called me that?
"It's Eleanora."
"I know."
