I've noticed an uptick in Kuroshitsuji fans applying Christian values and Christian mythology onto certain things in the series.

It's a Japanese series. Demons from Japanese lens are different from demons with a Christian lense. In Christianity, demons are connected to sin. In Japan, they just *are.* They're their own beings, disconnected from the morality of humans and what a Christian God considers sinful. That's what I read demons in Kuroshitsuji as; they're extremely powerful beings that can bend their surroundings to their will and want one thing and will destroy anything that gets in their way of acquiring that thing (in the series' case, Ciel's soul). They're more on par with what the west sees as an "evil" spirit of entity, not the Christian fire and brimstone sinner thing.

Do I think Yana does use some Christian mythology as an influence? Sure. The series is set in Victorian England. But pushing it into a strictly Christian lense steps away from the fact that it's a Japanese story, written by a Japanese woman, and that leaves a bad taste in my mouth about how western fans handle non western cultures

I feel like a lot of people forget that Kuroshitsuji is a Japanese story because it's set in Victorian England.

But it *is* a Japanese story. The discussion of tainting souls? Shinto.

Sebastian being a black hole of a being, made to consume and destroy? Shinto.

The tainting of souls being done be collapsar Sebastian and not through sin? Shinto.

Sebastian wanting to *eat* Ciel, not damn him to hell? Shinto.

The twin reveal? A common JDrama trope.

One of the prevailing themes in the story being the atrocities humans inflict on each other being worse than what a supernatural being who just wants a meal?

All the servants personality tropes, the focus on food and the visual quality, the way the character backstories are presented, the framing of certain panels, how the story is being told and the way it's slowly unravelling?

All Japanese.

It is a *very* Japanese story. Acting like it's not and reading it through a Christian and/or Western lense is striping it of it's cultural contexts and it's a disservice to the story and to the author.

Today on why Dadbastian is fucking stupid, I was rewatching Tango on the Campania for the twentieth time this year and just wanted to point out the way Yuta portrays Sebastian responding to the prospect of being Ciel's "father." Yuta, who Yana, herself has deemed the most accurate portrayal of her character, plays the demon not only recoiling at the sentiment, but reiterating his distaste for it not once but TWICE.

"Father...?"

"Father??"

"FATHER??" 👿 (Translation: "what the fuck did you just call me, you pest of a brat????")

I love this because it shows off Yuta's subtle acting that he does even when he's not centre stage (these are all little asides that are almost off-screen), but also because it's a play into Sebastian's hilarious sensitivity about being called old or paternal.

I think nothing would annoy Sebastian more than being referred to as a parental figure, or even a guardian for his master. I think he very much sees Ciel as an equal, rather than a child he is rearing. It goes against his aesthetic.
