I love y’all, but the “it sounds like BL isn’t gonna amount to anything” is kind of irrelevant now that we know BT isn’t close to being finished, lol. What’s he gonna do? Keep cheating behind her back?  We’ll find out what’s up in the finale just like AK said. And, funnily enough, it’s probably the first episode when TayKay is officially no longer around. (Still don’t think BL is headed in that direction, but again, there were no lies told. A decision can’t be made about Buck’s next relationship until the current one is done.)

Cookies, Letters, and Apologies
I haven’t written anything creatively since the summer! But slipping in to participate in at least one day this Malex week.
Meet Ugly: You’re my new neighbor and I came over at 7am to introduce myself but it turns out you work late shifts, and I woke you up and now you hate me.
Also on AO3.
*****************************************************************************************
Michael had been meaning to introduce himself to his hotter than sin new neighbor that moved in across the hall from him a few weeks back.
He'd only gotten a few glimpses of him since his move-in day when it was pouring rain outside, and he and another insanely buff and attractive man carried in box after box while their wet t-shirts clung to their sculpted frames.
If Michael hadn't been running insanely late for work that Saturday, he would have stopped to help, but instead, all he could do was muster a quick hello and a quick goodbye in passing. He got a grunt back in return, but he didn't take it to heart, as hot neighbor and hot neighbors friend were in the midst of carrying a king-sized mattress up a relatively small hallway.
Since then, he'd never found an opportunity to approach his hot neighbor.
Once he saw him getting out of the elevator. His mouth was open, the words 'hello' ready to spill right off of his tongue, but the other man's phone rang, and Michael ducked his head into his grocery bag instead, catching a big whiff of ginger that made him sneeze before retreating to his apartment.
It was Tuesday around 5:30 am when he decided to make his move.
Michael's apartment building was newer, but the walls weren't the thickest in the world, especially the wall against the hallway. You could hear the voices of people carrying past as they made their way to the elevator or headed back to their homes. Michael was fiddling with a painting near his front door that refused to stay straight when he heard a voice that sounded like it was right outside.
Curiosity and just a regular old case of nosiness sent him to his peephole, where he spotted hot neighbor looking like perhaps he'd come fresh off a morning walk or something. From what little he could see through the circular lens, his hair was tousled, maybe a little wet, it was hard to tell, and he fit himself into a tight white shirt and black joggers that hugged his lower body like a warm hug.
Michael reached for the handle, fully intending to introduce himself finally, but stopped when he realized something. For one, he was only wearing black boxer briefs. And while he was proud of his body, that was just weird to burst out the front door with barely any clothes on.
As much as he wanted to meet the gorgeous man across the hall properly, he decided to finish his morning routine and then bite the bullet and knock on his door since he was clearly up for the day.
Michael busied himself with a little in-home workout Isobel had sent him, drank some coffee, and scarfed down a muffin before dressing in his cleanest outfit for another day at the garage. He typically didn't wear anything without a hole in it or a stain firmly attached, but he opted for a pair of black jeans, a white v-neck, and a checkered flannel that was sitting on the couch.
After locking up his place and taking about ten deep breaths, he walked the three feet over to his neighbor's door with a plate of chocolate chip muffins he'd thankfully made the night before. Isobel had once told you never go over to someone's house without bringing something, and this was the first time he'd ever actually taken that advice.
One, two, three knocks, and then he waited for a long minute.
Michael couldn't hear any movement on the other side of the door, but he figured the man could have been in the shower or something, so he knocked again rapidly, one, two, three, and then he heard the shuffling of feet.
Steeling himself, he took one more deep breath and then smiled widely when the door flew open.
"Can I help you? Do you have any idea what time it is?"
Michael's smile vanished as quickly as it had appeared when he took in his neighbor's dark hair, which was half matted to his head and half sticking up straight in the air. He had small bags under his eyes, and it looked like a pillow or remote had made a home on his cheek, with red lines cascading down to his chin.
He was still a vision, but he looked pissed as hell.
"Um, yeah. It's, um, like seven am. I saw you…I mean, I've seen you around a little before, and I just wanted to introduce myself," Michael stammered out, nervously shifting his weight back and forth and trying to keep a grip on the plate now that his palms were sweating.
Hot neighbor raised an eyebrow. "Who are you?"
"Oh, I'm, uh, Michael Guerin."
"And how do you know me, Michael Guerin?"
"I live across the hall."
The man made a show of looking past Michael at the door marked 4B and then brought his eyes back to Michael's face, still looking like he was ready to snap. "Alex Manes. I just worked a ten-hour overnight shift, and I just got to sleep about thirty minutes ago."
Michael wanted to smile, finally learning the name of the man he couldn't stop wondering about, but he felt like a total ass for interrupting the guy's sleep. It was clear Alex wanted to be back in his bed and not standing in this drafty hallway talking to a stranger.
Michael was starting to feel a little queasy and quite frankly sad and just wanted to leave as quickly as possible.
"I just wanted to welcome you to the building, is all. And I made these muffins last night. I don't know if you eat gluten or not. Or maybe you're allergic to chocolate. And fuck, I should have thought about that before I brought these over here. I mean, freak. Maybe you don't curse. I obviously don't know anything about you, and I just showed up with a plate of gluten; what's wrong with me?" By the end of his ramblings, Michael was talking to himself, as he'd abandoned looking at Alex, staring at the muffins that appeared to be mocking him along with God and anyone else looking down on this atrocity.
"I'm going to go. Enjoy the muffins or don't. It's all fine. Go back to bed. I am so sorry!" Michael bent down to place the plate at Alex's feet and then literally sprinted down to the elevators, not waiting for a reply.
If he'd taken a second to collect himself and allowed the blood to stop pounding in his ears, he would have heard Alex calling his name.
***
Old Man Sanders wouldn't let up on Michael all day about his disastrous first meeting with the best-looking person he'd seen in New Mexico in his entire life.
He walked into work sweating and looking like he would be sick, and Sanders insisted he tell him what the problem was. Of course, Michael word vomited it all up, and now Sanders was making it a point to rag on him any chance he got.
Still reeling from the awkwardness, Michael was annoyed at first, but as the day went on and he started to feel less connected to the encounter, he began to laugh as well and even poke fun at himself.
"It really couldn't have gone worse if I tried, Iz," Michael relayed to Isobel as he made the trek from the parking lot into his apartment building that night.
It was well after seven, which was later than he usually got home, but he'd be lying if he said he hadn't thought that coming home later in the evening would pretty much ensure that he wouldn't have to run into Alex, assuming he had another shift that night.
Isobel laughed on the other line, not even pretending to feel sorry for him. "I'm sorry, Michael. But he sounds like a grump. So maybe you dodged a bullet."
Michael sighed, lowering his voice for some reason even though he was getting on an empty elevator. "He was exhausted. And probably elated to go to sleep, and here I am pounding on his door at the ass crack of dawn with a plate of carbs. Nobody wants that."
He could hear Isobel scoff loudly, and he smiled. "Um, most people would love that, actually."
When he got off the lift, Michael stilled and spotted his blue and white dinner plate he'd left at Alex's feet sitting on the ground outside his door. "I gotta go, Iz. Talk to you later."
He hung up and slowly made his way to the door, leaning down to grab the plate and looking back at Alex's door, expecting what? He didn't know. After a few seconds, he let himself into his apartment and saw a piece of lined paper folded up on the ground.
He reached down so fast he almost threw out his back. He opened it and didn't recognize the handwriting, but he devoured the words in a hurry.
Michael –
I apologize for being so rude this morning. I was out of it, but that's no excuse for how I treated you. Maybe we can have a do-over one of these days?
Sorry again.
-Alex
P.S. I love gluten and chocolate. The muffins were fucking delicious 🤍
Michael read the note several times that night, wondering if he should reply or ambush him again when he got home from work.
He quickly ruled out the ambushing at 5 am idea and instead sat down with a notepad next to his meatloaf dinner and crafted what he hoped was an appropriate response.
Hey Alex!
It's okay. It was early, and I woke you up. I'm just glad you don't hate me now! I would love a do-over someday. Let me know when you're absolutely, positively free, and maybe we can meet again.
Let me know.
-Michael
P.S. I'm actually a sick baker. If you have any requests, I can probably hook you up.
And that's how things went for the next few days—a series of notes sent back and forth between the two men, who worked complete opposite shifts.
 Michael-
I am a sucker for peanut butter cookies : )
-Alex
P.S. And I really am sorry. I'll stop saying it now, but what a terrible first impression.
 Hi Alex!
Please stop apologizing!! You should see me after I've worked a 16 hour day and towed 6 cars from here to Santa Fe and back. If you woke me up then, I don't know what I would have done.
I hope you like the cookies. I put a little something extra in it. Let me know if you can figure out what it is : )
-Michael
P.S. Do you like to cook?
 Michael –
So, do you work at a garage?
I have no idea what the secret ingredient is but damn, these are the best peanut butter cookies I've ever had. I tried not to eat them all in one sitting, but the heart wants what the heart wants.
Was that your subtle way of asking me when I would cook for you? If you want me to invite you over, all you have to do is ask.
-Alex
P.S. What else do you like to do besides bake?
P.P.S. I only know how to make toast and use the microwave.
 Hey Alex,
I do work at a garage. I am a mechanic. I've got the best hands in New Mexico. What do you do?
The secret ingredient is honey. You can never have enough honey in anything.
I'd rather not invite myself over. I was hoping maybe you'd extend the offer : )
-Michael
P.S. No more food requests?
P.P.S. We need to get you some cooking classes!
 Michael -
I'm a Network Administrator. The hours suck, but the pay is great.
What if I were hoping you would invite me over?
-Alex
P.S. A brownie would really hit the spot after a long shift…
P.P.S. I would be down for a cooking class if you were teaching it.
 Hello there,
That sounds like a demanding job. I would love to hear all about it sometime.
I'm still waiting for you to let me know when you're free...
-Michael
P.S. Hope you like the brownies!
P.P.S. I'm no professional, but maybe we can work something out!
Two days passed with no note back from Alex, and Michael wished he could say he wasn't panicking, but he was.
They'd been flirting, at least that's what it felt like, and Michael hated that it just ended so abruptly.
He thought about just walking over and knocking on his door, but he didn't want to seem desperate, even if he was feeling that way. He was totally and utterly into Alex, and he barely knew anything about him, outside of the fact that he looked adorable when he first woke up.
He tried to put it out of his head when he got ready for work the following Tuesday, not eavesdropping against his door and listening for footsteps at 5 am.
He was about to sit down at the table and enjoy a nice mug of coffee and scone when there was a knock on his door.
"Uh, yeah. Coming!" He called as he grabbed the hoodie hanging off the back of his chair and threw it on, so he wasn't facing his early morning guest without a shirt on.
It didn't even register to Michael to look through the peephole. It was far too early. So imagine his surprise when he opened the door to see Alex Manes standing there with a sheepish grin and a steaming casserole dish.
"I tried to make a quiche. I have no idea what it's going to taste like," Alex spat out with a nervous laugh.
Michael felt like he couldn't breathe. He stared at Alex in his black beanie and all-grey sweatsuit and kept blinking as if to make sure he was real.
"You okay, Michael?" Alex asked, concerned.
Michael shook his head slightly and willed himself to speak. "You said you only knew how to make toast?"
Alex shrugged, the cutest shade of pink creeping into his cheeks. "I may or may not have watched a tik tok on how to make a quiche and tried a few times over the past few days. I'm pretty confident this will be the best one yet."
Michael had to fight the urge to pull his neighbor into his apartment by the strings of his hoodie and kiss him senseless before the sun even set.
Alternatively, he opened the door wider and stood to make room.
"I would like to invite you in for breakfast, Alex Manes."
Alex smiled brighter than the sun. "I thought you'd never ask."

that’s just the way you make me feel
summary: yet another 3.09 coda that takes place a few days afterwards with alex still feeling the affects from lack of sleep.
ao3 link
“Hey,” a familiar voice broke Alex out of his sleep. Alex slowly realized that he was leaning on Michael’s shoulder in the middle of the Crashdown with all their friends watching. He blushed at the realization, before swiftly lifting his head up. The quick movement made him dizzy and he felt Michael put his arm around him.

day 5 : dynamics - this machine runs on malex
Belated for
@roswellnewmexicocreate
For better or worse, for richer or for poorer (after a Vlambase drop- I’m definitely poorer!!) this pairing is what keeps me engaged in fandom and keeps my brain noodling out various stories. I have tried to stop, hell, the show tried to make me stop on a number of occasions by breaking my heart, but there’s just something so pure about Malex, that two plus years later my hyperfixation is still intact. [I came to fandom in May 2019 right before 1x13 lol]

Please enjoy the 22 Malex stories I’ve gathered from the last year. 😍 Our fandom is very blessed with content even during the very long hiatuses we have.
Contractual Obligations - @gritkitty & @changingthingslikeleaves  (118, 084) Michael needs to get to Roswell. After he grew up in the foster system, with no family to tie him to New Mexico, he left it behind without a second thought. But when he comes across a piece of mysterious multi-colored glass, he has to trace it back to Roswell’s UFO Emporium, no matter what it takes. The concept is simple. The contract is not. After Alex’s injury in Iraq, his father forces him to return to Roswell to recover with the assistance of a Companion. And unless Alex selects a Companion of his own, Jesse will do it for him.
why i like it: full disclosure, I was privileged to do the pre-reading and betaing of this story, so I got to read it all at once, and it’s just amazing. Number one, the characterization of Alex Manes was perfect in this re-write of RNM canon. He was suspicious bastard I loved from season 1, and Jesse Manes remains the worst. His recovery was handled realistically, and his transition from able-bodied to disabled was also in character as he deals with his new reality. The world building was so interesting, and the power dynamics between them were handled delicately- also the sex in this epic is very very good.
***
Not letting what we built up crumb to dust - @jule1122 (6,121) Michael fell in love with Alex when he was seventeen.  Now that they are finally together he learns to love Alex all over again.
why i like it: obviously the malex part of the story was great, but what I always return to on this story is the Max and Michael bonding, it was superb. Max and Michael have learned to give each other a bit of space and accept the rough edges of the past and it’s so good.
***
things we could burn in one go (eminence) by @haloud (64,769) Something broke once in this town. Mr. Jones claims to know how and why and where the pieces can be found, but Michael has already spent most of his life chasing broken things and falling short. But as things fall apart around him, he’s forced to turn to the one person who claims to have answers, despite the cost of trusting him, in order to protect the people he loves. For Alex, everything is finally coming together. His father is dead, his friends came out the other side unscathed, and Forrest is everything he should want in a boyfriend. But the past isn’t done with him yet, and he’ll have to fight like hell if he wants a chance at the future that’s always seemed so out of reach.
why i like it: this fic delivers everything- pod squad feels, malex reconciliation, mr. jones plotting, Michael gaining a new power- hal is practically a psychic because of how many things in this fic cropped up in season 3. I love it for the hurt comfort though, Michael gets clobbered and then Alex takes care of him? Love it.
and more recs under the cut because this got long!

RNM Create 2021 - Day 3
Works from September 2020 - August 2021
Angst
I love angst a lot and of course Malex provide plenty of it. I am getting a bit torn when it comes to canon though, right now I just want them to hug. However, fics are a different matter. The level of angst in these fics differs, but what they have in common is they all make me feel so much.
Can I Stay? by @skinsharpenedteeth
“Alex Manes finds he can’t sleep well without Michael in his bed. This is an issue since he’s dating Forrest and Michael is still in love with him. So follows a four month series of nights both beautiful and ugly.”
Over the last year this author has quickly become one of my favourites, and there are some ongoing WIPs that I’m really excited about, but this fic has an extra special place in my heart and I keep going back to reread it. It is indeed both beautiful and ugly as neither Alex or Michael are in a great place for much of this, but it’s so so good.
I’m still here hoping (that one day you may come back) by margosfairyeye (Skittery) / @ineverlookavvay
“Set during the lost decade. After years apart, Alex and Michael spend a night together.”
This is lost decade angst in all its glory. An awkward meeting after years apart, a beautiful night together, and a painful morning after. It’s beautiful and it rips my heart out and I love it.
something so flawed and free by @adiwriting
“At their ten-year high school reunion, Michael and Alex fall back into each other, but with four years of distance and a heavy secret, can it ever be more?”
This is part of the AU Nova Mae series Heartbeat and the entire series is absolutely amazing (mpreg even for people who normally don’t read mpreg, trust me). I kept moving between angst and fluff day, because I am either smiling widely or crying my eyes out when I read this series, by I ended up going with angst and picking this particular fic which is a wonderfully angsty encounter (of course they can’t keep their hands off each other) after Alex comes back into town, before he finds out about Nova Mae. Michael’s hopefullness and pain absolutely kills me.
There will be no rules tonight (If there were we’d break ‘em) by @wle0416
“Michael and Alex are friends with benefits, but when Michael sees him at a frat party with someone else, he doesn’t handle it well.”
Friends with benefits where they both want something more but they don’t think the other one does is always a treat. Michael being shocked at seeing Alex with someone else and it all becoming too much for him. His lonely walk home. Alex following and catching up to him. I love Alex’s hurt confusion when he confronts Michael. And then they actually talk and it’s so very sweet.
This Hard Love by @lambourngb
“What if Alex had stayed after high school? What if hadn’t mattered? What if there were other forces at work that kept Michael and Alex apart?”
I really tried to limit myself to one day for each author, but there’s an exception to every rule and Lambourn writes my favourite kind of angst with a happy ending so I couldn’t not include this here. Plus this fic has so much goodness. It’s AU but many things from canon are woven into the story in a way that works very well. It has Michael and Alex in a relationship after High School, trying to build a life together, but secrets and misunderstandings still pull them apart (it’s so very sad) and keeps them apart after Alex leaves (Michael showing up at Alex’s doorstep and seeing him with a boyfriend and dog is painful). It has Alex coming back into town and truths being revealed. It ALSO has both sweet and angsty Guerenti (which might almost be my favourite part). It’s definitely a Malex fic, but Kyle is really great in this.

day 3 angst : let all your damage, damage me
Day 3 Angst this is a fandom that naturally invites angst with the myriad horrible events that are canon, from foster care, (attempted or not?) sex assault by the drifter and the later Noah’s whole arc, murders - not just one!, homophobic assault, drug abuse, child abuse, racism, the lost decade/DADT, alien-themed concentration camps, etc. I mean I think I’m probably missing a few themes and that says something, right?
I would like to consider myself a connoisseur of angst, but as canon grows my tastes have narrowed considerably. I’m less invested in hopeful endings, I rather need the happy ones with Malex. I also don’t trade in stories where these two are emotionally abusive or controlling of each other. So below are some stories that are angsty, some with heavy themes, but are malex endgame.
Falling series - Falling Like the Stars by @adiwriting (61,771) It’s not that Alex doesn’t know that Michael wants a baby, or that he will be a good dad. Michael isn’t the problem. He is.
why i like it: Full disclosure, this was my christmas present from Britt and I am still on the floor about how generous she was to write me this, not to mention how great it turned out. We all know Michael wants his dad band with Alex, but how does Alex feel about parenthood? That’s a bigger mystery, since we don’t have a canon answer. This story starts with a much softer Lost Decade, where Michael and Alex reconcile after only a couple of years apart, Michael becoming Alex’s supportive military spouse (obviously with misgivings still about the military) - with Afghanistan in the news today, this is a heavy story about deployment there, about Alex coming home changed, and about what it takes to be a family and a father. I cried several times reading it.
***
In my worst moments by @thisatacamasky (37,287) What if Alex couldn’t resist seeing Michael one last time before his first deployment. He doesn’t want to die in a desert on the other side of the world without seeing his face, feeling his touch, without having Michael one last time. But it seems they are connected so intrinsically that Alex sees Michael everywhere. Even when he’s on the other side of the world, fighting in a war he doesn’t believe in, with soldiers he can’t trust, for a country that doesn’t love him for who he is.
why i like it: I’m weak for alien soulmate bullshit, and this story has such a unique look at the connection. Deep in the Lost Decade angst, Alex is brought into the alien secret much quicker after the inadvertent bonding. This story has it all, angst, miscommunication, hot sex, friction with Michael’s family, and above all a cosmic connection between Michael and Alex. There’s two more stories in this series, as the author starts to tackle season 1 in their universe.
***
First 50 Break Ups by @bestillmyslashyheart (7,510) Alex would really like to stop having to break up with Michael every day.
why i like it: so many break ups with these two, most of them they weren’t even dating during them! The angst of Michael waking up every day thinking that they were good, that he and Alex were happy, and Alex having to tell him each day that no, it was over? Ugh crying forever now. I think my favorite part was the reveal behind what happened, and it’s something that nearly every couple has to address.
***
Did you know, could you tell? @aewriting (7,799) Michael is shocked to discover that Alex is engaged to another man. Alex is shocked to discover just how little he’s actually shared with his own fiance.
why i like it: oh man, sometimes AE gets right into my head when she shares a story, and this one is no different. When Forrest was first announced a million years ago, I couldn’t help but think about how hard it would be to explain Jesse Manes to an outsider,  let alone the cosmic connection with Michael, and this story does a brilliant job of giving me Alex, doing things because he thinks that is the next step of being “normal” in a relationship with this OMC and then she gives me Michael seeing right through it.
***
Stay a little longer by @arielana (10,241) “Hey,” Michael’s tone was casual as he slid onto the barstool next to Alex. He’d been playing pool for the last half hour, seemingly busy joking around with a group of tourists who were losing badly, but Alex knew that he’d been fully aware of Alex’s presence the whole time, that all he had to do was wait. He didn’t have to keep his eyes on Michael to know that.
why I like it: - I love the trope of “not actually unrequited love” and this story has it in spades. Michael and Alex fall into a “friends with benefits” relationship after season 2, while Alex is trying to figure things out with Forrest, and it’s such a rollercoaster of pining and dumbass decisions that I was hooked after the first scene. I also teared up a little after the end of the first chapter, Michael truly breaking my heart, but thankfully the ending helped heal all of that.
***
woven from memory by @litwitlady (5,002) Michael calls and asks Alex out to dinner. They decide to go on five ‘talking, not fucking’ dates. The first date is full of awkward ups and downs, but somehow, they survive.
why i like it: this is more of a low stakes angst, but I’ve often pictured what their first date will be like once they get back together, and Brooke has nailed it here. The awkwardness, the intensity of knowing that they have to get it right this time because there probably won’t be a fourth or fifth chance at this- it’s so good. It’s a truly adult look at what Malex communication looks like at 30-somethings.
****
I’m gonna free fall out into nothin’ by @wle0416 (5,926) Michael is getting ready to leave the planet, which means he has to say his goodbyes.
why i like it: Well, full disclosure, this was written off a prompt of mine, and wow, the final product just blew me away. The author had no idea I’m a huge tom petty fan as well. Anyway, Michael having a ship and making a choice about leaving or staying is an idea that won’t leave me alone from the OC show. I do want Michael to discover everything he can about his people, to be allowed to reconnect with his culture, and the delicious angst of everyone saying goodbye to him is just a cherry on top in this story.
***
let the heartbeat take me home by @alexmanesss (2,421) prompt: i wrote my crush a note except i started it with 'dear you’ and my friend stuck it into the wrong locker and now you think i have a crush on you.
why i like it: Okay this is some sweet teen malex and low stakes angst, but who doesn’t remember that crushing feeling in high school when your crush acts oblivious to you after you’ve made an overture? I just love the terror that Alex feels, then how hopeful Michael was - truly a great “meet ugly”.

title: fire side chat
summary: 3.01 coda. what if alex went to talk to michael after he left the bus stop?
thanks to @angrycowboy for the beta!
crosspost to ao3
Michael was tired. Max was dying again, Isobel was trying to pretend that everything was okay when they knew it wasn’t, so she wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone and Michael…
Michael was broken out of his depressing thoughts when he heard a car pull up. Looking up, he saw Alex stepping out of his car and shutting the door. The last time he had seen Alex was across the Crashdown, when he saw him kissing Forrest as he was getting off the bus. He knew he had no reason to be jealous. He dated Maria and walked out in the middle of the Pony when Alex was singing, giving Alex no indication that he was actually waiting for their moment together.
They really needed to learn how to communicate. But right now, Alex looked like he was about to break down or break one of his chairs, so he went with a nice approach.
“Alex?” Michael asked, startled as he watched the other man walking towards him near the fire pit.

Michael is getting ready to leave the planet, which means he has to say his goodbyes.
Thank you for all the prompts guys!!! This fic was born from an amazing one sent by @lambourngb about Michael being presented with a spaceship and way to find his people, but he doesn’t have Alex in his life.
This is my spin on it.

It's a long weekend, and I would love to get a couple thousand words out but my mind won't conjure up any ideas. Anyone have a prompt they want to throw my way? 🤗

Wake Me Up...
Alex gets injured, and Michael never leaves his side.
This is a little fic for my wonderful friend @alexmanesss !!! Happy Birthday 😘😘😘
Also on A03.
****************************************************************************************
Sunday mornings were for lounging.
Michael would sleep in past the first signs of daybreak, slithering around the Airstream in his briefs with a steaming mug of some nondescript dark roast. He would venture outside eventually to inhale a deep breath of that New Mexico air before deciding between a day spent curled up in the bunker tinkering with calculations or a day spent laying in bed reading through the latest batch of books he'd taken out from the Roswell Library.
A few months ago, his Sunday mornings would have consisted of breakfast with Maria, followed by a few hours wasting away at the Pony while she worked. Not the worst way to spend a day, but not something Michael could say he missed as the months post-breakup continued to accumulate.
There was always the option to call one of his siblings and see if they wanted to grab a bite at the Crashdown and itch the pancake craving he seemed to get every weekend, but he'd found that he started to look forward to the solitude of the quiet Sunday mornings.
So, when he heard the screech of tires in the junkyard lot a little past noon one morning in late summer, he knew his peaceful day was about to be blown to smithereens.
Michael exited the trailer before his guest could get to the door, and when he saw Kyle's SVU, at first, he couldn't help but roll his eyes. He was about to speak when he caught sight of Kyle's face, which looked terrible if Michael was honest.
He had a shiny black eye and a busted lip, plus he was walking a bit more gingerly than Michael had ever seen him.
"What happened?" Michael asked tone laced with actual concern.
Kyle shook his head slightly. "Everyone has been calling you all morning! There was an accident."
The air left Michael's lungs, and he immediately reached for his phone, which had been sitting on his desk on silent since late the night before. The outdated iPhone floated into his hand, and he saw first that his battery was low and secondly that he'd missed a slew of phone calls and texts from the people closest to him.
"Valenti! What happened!"
Kyle paused, rubbing his hands through his hair, which Michael now noticed was devoid of any of its usual high-end products. "Alex got a lead on Jones yesterday, and he didn't want to wait on it, so he called me, and we tracked him to this warehouse a few miles outside town. It was weird; it was like he was trying to summon something, but-"
"Valenti! Where's Alex?" He heard the desperation in his voice, and it scared him almost as much as the words accident and Alex being used in the same sentence.
"I got him stable, but it was bad, Guerin. It was just bad."
Michael ran inside to grab a shirt, throwing a plain white tee over his shoulders and grabbing a pair of boots and his phone charger on his way out of the trailer. He passed by Kyle without a word and got into the passenger seat of Kyle's SUV. He didn't trust himself to drive with the adrenaline coursing through his veins.
It took a few seconds for Kyle to catch up, but he shuffled his way over to the car when he did.
They drove in silence to Alex's house, which Michael appreciated but wouldn't dare say. His mind was only a constant loop of 'stable' and 'bad,' and he didn't think he could actually form coherent sentences until he could touch Alex himself and know for sure that he was okay.
He and Alex hadn't been particularly close in the first few month's post-CrashCon and their subsequent breakups, but Michael had felt a shift between them over the last few weeks. The never-ending search for Jones putting them in each other's orbits more and more and allowing their relationship to truly blossom into an easy friendship. Their texts shifting from check-ins about alien business to conversations about how their days were with some innocent flirting sprinkled in.
One Friday night, Alex had asked for Michael's help in picking out a movie for him to watch on Netflix, and it subsequently turned into a weekly thing. Michael had been hoping that one weekend Alex might see if he wanted to come over and watch the movie with him, but so far, he hadn't extended the invitation.
When they pulled up to Alex's house, Max's Jeep and Maria's truck were in the driveway, so Kyle parked on the street, and Michael was out and running into the house, still barefoot, before Kyle could cut the engine.
Michael saw Maria and Max first.
They were sitting in the main room where Michael had once found the late Jesse Manes sniffing around. Maria's eyes were red-rimmed, and she was still in her pajamas, while Max looked tired but otherwise fine. Though his face morphed into something like pain, and he was descending upon Michael in an instant, hands gripping his shoulders when he got close enough.
"Where is he?" Michael sputtered, dragging his arms free from Max.
"He's resting," Max began and when Michael shouldered past him. He grabbed his wrist to yank him back a step.
"Fuck, Max! What?"
Max sighed and looked thoughtful. "I did what I could do, but I'm still too weak. And he told me that he'd never forgive himself if something happened to me."
Michael wished he could have said something to comfort Max, who was clearly a bit frazzled, but all his brain could think of was Alex. So, he wiggled free from his grasp and walked back toward Alex's bedroom, which was cracked slightly.
He saw his face first, a collage of red and purple blotches, his left eye completely swollen shut. He had a bandage around his head and his right arm wrapped in a sort of cast.
There was no exaggerating things when Alex was that close to him. He looked to be in bad shape.
Kyle had somehow gotten his hands on medical equipment and had Alex hooked up to all kinds of machines that were making soft noises in the relatively silent space.
As Michael crept closer, he felt the tears breaking free, and he didn't even bother to wipe them away as he finally got to the bed and sank down at the edge. He stared at Alex for a long while, staring at his chest and rhythmically counting the rise and fall of his chest.
He sat there for what must have been an hour before he heard Kyle quietly make his way into the room. He went to check the IV in Alex's arm and took his temperature before writing some things down in a notebook he had sticking out of his back pocket.
"How come you look like that, and he looks like…this?" The words were whispered, Michael's eyes never leaving Alex's face.
"It's Alex. He put himself right in Jones' path to protect me," Kyle whispered back.
"Always a damn hero," Michael muttered.
Kyle said something Michael couldn't hear, and he didn't ask him to repeat it.
A few minutes later, Kyle left, and Michael stayed by Alex's side for the rest of the day, only getting up once to pee after Max forced him to drink a bottle of water and eat a protein bar. There was a continuous flow of people stopping in the room to gape at Alex and try to make small talk with Michael.
Eventually, only Kyle and Michael remained, with Kyle refusing to leave the house in case Alex woke up, and Michael, well, he wasn't leaving there under any circumstance.
Around midnight, Kyle rapped on the door to let Michael know he would sleep on the couch and to wake him up if Alex so much as fluttered a finger.
At some point earlier in the evening, Michael had maneuvered his body, so he was sprawled out along the foot of the bed, Alex's foot pressed against his abdomen with a thin sheet separating them. It took him a long while after Kyle left to fall asleep, his hand atop the thin sheets cupping Alex's calf.
"I'll see you in the morning," he murmured before the exhaustion of the day finally pulled him under.
***
"How come you look like that, and I can barely move?"
"Oh, you don't remember standing in front of me when Jones brought half the roof down on us?"
Alex coughed a dry noise that sounded painful. "I couldn't let him hurt you."
"Alex, I can take care of myself," Kyle said a little more brusquely than he meant to. "But thank you."
"How long has he been down there?" Alex asked, motioning to the curly-haired man using his foot as a temporary pillow and drooling slightly.
"You've been out for two days, and I think he's left the bed three times to use the bathroom. He's gonna be pissed he missed you waking up."
Alex tried to curl his lips up into a smile, but every muscle of his face hurt, and it wasn't worth the effort. He just looked down at the man and let his one working eye gaze at that beautiful face before he drifted back off.
***
Michael almost broke the gorgeous glass vase Alex kept on his night table when he woke up, and Kyle told him that Alex had been alert and coherent.
He initially wanted to shake him awake and get confirmation that Alex, his Alex, was really going to make it through. But he knew that was stupid, and he was content to stay awake and in bed with Alex until he came woke up again.
He'd stay beside his side for however long it took.
***
"I think we should wake him up," Kyle said as he lifted a glass of water to Alex's swollen lips. "He almost went nuclear on all your glassware."
"But he looks so peaceful," Alex remarked, looking over to Michael, who'd migrated from the end of the bed to Alex's left. His curls were splayed against the pillow, and he was drooling yet again, a sigh escaping his lips when he exhaled.
"He's not so peaceful when he's threatening me," Kyle mumbled, checking that everything he had connected to Alex in the makeshift hospital room he'd concocted was alright after Alex started moving around at three am and triggered the blood pressure machine which woke Kyle up and sent him right to his side.
"He's been helping me every chance he gets. He's like my own person resident," Kyle continued. "I think he counts your breathing during the day. But somehow, he sleeps through these random bouts of lucidity you have when the drugs wear off."
"Tomorrow, I'll wake him up, and I'll try to get out of this bed. Deal?"
Kyle rolled his eyes and took one more look at Michael's sleeping form. If he weren't such an annoying, arrogant jerk half the time, Kyle would have almost found his devotion to Alex charming.
"Fine."
***
"Sanders knows something is up because I never miss this much work, but he hasn't pried at all, which I appreciate. I told him I had a family emergency, and he just told me to take care of my own," Michael spoke into the space between him and Alex.
It was half-past midnight, four days since Michael had gotten to the house. The room was dark, a sliver of moonlight peeking through the blinds and illuminating the foot of the bed.
Michael's left arm was gingerly draped across Alex's chest, enjoying the heat radiating off him.
"Take care of my own," Michael continued. "I started thinking about what that even means. Because my whole life, I only ever really looked out for myself. I had Max and Iz, but so much of the time, they never felt like my own. This will sound crazy, but you're the only thing I've ever had in my life that felt like mine. It's like from the minute we met, I felt seen. And you know how huge that was for me, Alex. I'd never felt seen before. Ever. And even though you didn't know about this huge part of me, I still felt like you knew me better than anyone. Not the person I pretended to be, but me. I felt loved by you and accepted. I know we never said it back then, but I always felt it. I felt that love, Alex. And god, I hope you felt it, too. Because I loved you so much, Alex. With every single piece of myself.
"I still love you, ya know? We've been apart, and we've been with other people, but none of that matters now because I know you are it for me. You are everything I want in this life and the only thing I will ever need. And when you wake up, I will tell you the same exact thing, so don't be mad at me for whispering this in your ear when you're asleep."
Michael paused thoughtfully to bring his hand up to Alex's face. Tracing his index finger lightly down Alex's cheek, which was still bruised, but slowly healing.
"I love you, Alex. Goodnight."
***
When Michael opened his eyes at seven am on Friday morning, the first thing he saw was Alex's brown eyes staring back at him.
His left eye was still swollen, but he could open it some, and Michael could see the brown iris shining back at him. He immediately reached forward to cup Alex's face gently.
"God, I missed you," Michael breathed out, moving so that he was hovering over Alex, who was on his back.
"I missed you, too," Alex whispered. His voice was scratchy, and Michael instinctively moved to grab the water Kyle left on the nightstand closest to Alex.
He brought the straw to Alex's lips, never breaking eye contact, and smiled softly back at him.
"Better?"
"Mmm," Alex hummed. "What day is it?"
"Friday. And Kyle is going to make you get out of this bed today, just so you know."
"Yes, I know," Alex remarked with a slight grimace.
Michael wanted to get Kyle because it looked like Alex was in some pain, but the softness etched across Alex's face had him frozen in bed.
"Michael, can we stop pretending now?"
"What?" Michael asked, recoiling a bit.
"I don't want to just be your friend anymore. And I don't think you just want to be my friend either."
Michael felt the stress that had crept in seconds prior dissipate, and his body naturally inclined back to its rightful spot closer to Alex's warmth. "You're right. I don't want to be just your friend."
"Want to watch a movie on Netflix with me tonight?"
Michael laughed for the first time in what felt like forever. All the pain and grief he'd been hanging onto suddenly expelled in one long, bright bit of laughter.
"I thought you would never ask, honestly."
Before Alex could respond, Kyle came pounding into the room with a delighted and annoyed expression. "How long have you been up? And why didn't you call for me, Michael?"
"Woah, everything is fine, Kyle," Alex said, stretching as best he could in the confines of the bed. "I'm ready to try to get up now."
"Can I help?" Michael asked quickly, all hopeful eyes and a hopeful tone.
"I'd like that," Alex replied, tugging his lips up into a grin. "And maybe when we get back, you can declare your love for me again? Since my eyes are open now."
Michael smirked and winked at his forever love. "Oh, baby, I've got over a decade's worth of declarations saved up. Just you wait."
