the manuscript is really the ultimate summation of taylor’s discography
Now and then she re-reads the manuscript Of the entire torrid affair -> Red: loving him was red / All Too Well: Just between us did the love affair maim you too He said, "I'm not a donor but I'd give you my heart if you needed it" -> Electric Touch: Got a feelin' your electric touch could fill this ghost town up with life
He said, "No, just a Good Samaritan" -> State of Grace: So you were never a saint, and I loved in shades of wrong He said that if the sex was half as good as the conversation was -> I Bet You Think About Me: And the girl in your bed has a fine pedigree/And I'll bet your friends tell you she's better than me … you said we're too different/You laughed at my dreams, rolled your eyes at my jokes -> Maroon: Laughing with my feet in your lap/Like you were my closest friend
Soon they'd be pushing strollers -> All Too Well: You taught me about your past, thinking your future was me But soon it was over -> All Too Well: And I know it’s long gone -> Better Man: I wish you were a better man/You might have been the one if you were a better man In the age of him she wished she was thirty -> All Too Well: You said if we had been closer in age maybe it would have been fine/And that made me want to die Then she dated boys who were her own age -> Slut!: In a world of boys, he's a gentleman -> Ready for It: Younger than my exes but he acts such a man so Looking backwards might be the only way To move forward -> Long Story Short: Actually I always felt I must look better in the rear view And the slow dance was alight with the sparks -> Mastermind: And the touch of a hand lit the fuse/Of a chain reaction of countermoves -> cowboy like me: You asked me to dance… -> How Did It End: We learned the right steps to different dances
And the tears fell in synchronicity with the score (Although here I think it means music score) -> Hoax: You knew you won, so what's the point of keeping score? One last souvenir from my trip to your shores -> Long Story Short: And my waves meet your shore, ever and evermore Now and then I re-read the manuscript But the story isn't mine anymore
-> These songs were once about my life, now it’s about yours

I do think the prologue entails what the whole album/each song is about (and unfortunately, many of which is about the fiasco of summer 23… aka m***** h*****)
As you might all unfortunately recall
I had been struck with a case of a restricted humanity
-> Anti-Hero: Sometimes I feel everybody’s a sexy baby/And I’m a monster on the hill
-> Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me: I’m always drunk on my own tears, isn’t that what they all said?
-> I Can Do It With a Broken Heart
Which explains my plea here today of temporary insanity
-> Down Bad: They'll say I'm nuts if I talk about/The existence of you
-> But Daddy I Love Him: No, I'm not coming to my senses/I know it's crazy/But he's the one I want
You see, the pendulum swings
Oh, the chaos it brings
Leads the caged beast to do the most curious things
-> Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me: You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me
Lovers spend years denying what's ill fated
Resentment rotting away galaxies we created
-> You’re Losing Me: Every morning I glared at you with storms in my eyes/How can you say that you love someone you can’t tell has died?
-> My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys (maybe)
-> How Did It End: Our maladies were such/We could not cure them
Stars placed and glued meticulously by hand next to the ceiling fan
-> Lover: We could leave the lights up til January/This is our place, we make the rules
Tried wishing on comets
Tried dimming the shine
Tried to orbit his planet
-> Long Story Short: He’s passing by, rare as the glimmer of a comet in a sky
-> So Long, London: Pulled him in tighter each time he was drifting away
Some stars never align.
-> Invisible String: All along there was some invisible string, tying you to me
-> How Did It End: We were blind to unforeseen circumstances/We learn the right steps to diffеrent dances
-> The Prophecy: I'm so afraid I sealed my fate/No sign of soulmates
And in one conversation,
I tore down the whole sky.
-> Down Bad: For a moment I knew cosmic love/Now, I’m down bad (maybe)
-> So Long, London: And you say I abandoned the ship, but I was going down with it
Spring sprung forth with dazzling freedom hues
Then a crash from the skylight bursting through
Something old, someone hallowed,
-> Fresh Out the Slammer: Now pretty baby, I'm running back home to you
-> loml: Who's gonna stop us from waltzing back into rekindled flames (maybe)
-> Guilty as Sin?: What if the way you hold is actually what's holy?… I choose you and me, religiously
-> imgonnagetyouback: I can tell when somebody still wants me, come clean … Push the reset button, we're becoming something new
who told me he could be brand new
-> I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)
And so I was out of the oven and into the microwave
(Oven and microwave is an interesting metaphor. As function-wise, they are similar, inducing heat. so basically, what she sought for wasn’t the better option, or perhaps even worser one)
Out of the slammer and into a tidal wave
-> The Tortured Poets Department: I chose this cyclone with you
-> Fresh Out the Slammer
How gallant to save the empress from her gilded tower
-> So It Goes: Gold cage, hostage to my feelings
-> The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived: Cause once your queen had come/You'd treat her likе an also-ran
Swinging a sword he could barely lift
-> loml: The coward claimed he was lion (maybe)
-> The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived: You didn't measure up/In any measurе of a man
But loneliness struck at the fateful hour
-> Fortnight: I took the miracle move on drug, the effects were temporary
Low hanging fruit on his wine stained lips
-> The Tortured Poets Department: At dinner you take my ring off my middle finger and put it on the one people put wedding rings on
-> Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus: You said some things that I can't unabsorb/You turned me into an idea of sorts
-> Peter: Words from the mouths of babes/Promises oceans deep/But never to keep
He never even scratched the surface of me
None of them did.
“In summation, it was not a love affair!”
I screamed while banging my fists to my coffee ringed desk.
It was a mutual manic phase.
-> The Tortured Poets Department: Everyone we know understands why it's meant to be/Because we're crazy
It was self harm.
-> But Daddy I Love Him: I'll tell you something right now/I'd rather burn my whole life down
-> I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can): Thеy shake their heads saying, "God, help her" when I tell 'em he's my man
It was house and then cardiac arrest.
-> The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived: Were you sent by someone who wanted me dead?

I haven’t seen it mentioned yet but what a perfect songwritery twist on “alls fair in love and war” to make it “alls fair in love and poetry” … it gives off two things, one that in love and out of love (in war) there are no rules (anything’s fair game!) and second this sense of choosing not going to war when you have grievances but instead to turn to writing about them. which is so taylor

all’s fair in love and poetry’s a very obvious play on words. and the implication that her craft was the war is very interesting

"Oh god, oh god, no! I don't know, man. Guys, you gotta come closer. I feel really alone. I feel so alone. Oh my god. Um, okay, I want to say, I get to work with one of my best friends, who is not only one of my best friends, but also a once-in-a-generation producer. That's Jack Antonoff. I am so lucky. And engineer Laura Sisk. I'm going to say thank you to Serban Ghanea, Sam Dew, Sounwave, Lana Del Rey was hiding, but I think so many female artist would not be where they are, and would not have the inspiration they have if not for the work that she's done. I think she's a legacy artist, a legend in her prime right now. I'm so lucky to know you and to be your friend. I would love to tell you that this is the best moment of my life. But I feel this happy when I finish a song, or when I crack the code to a bridge that I love, or when I'm shot-listing a music video, or when I'm rehearsing with my dancers, or my band, or getting ready to go to Tokyo to play a show. For me, the award is the work. All I want to do is keep being able to do this. I love it so much. It makes me so happy. It makes me unbelievably blown away that it makes some people happy who voted for this award too. All I want to do is keep doing this. So thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to do what I love so much. Mind-blown. Thank you so much!"
— Taylor accepting the 2024 Grammy Award for Album of the Year (and becoming the only artist to ever win four times)
