hi. so I know, logically, that it doesn't mean me, but your character backstory post that says "mandi keep out" scared the crap out of me, as that is my name down to the spelling. though we are in no way familiar, the fear I had somehow caused an offense so great it had reached you was very, very real for about two full seconds.
That is hilarious but also im sorry for the panic. I should specify that the ONLY mandi im trying to keep out is @mandiminimojo
All other mandis can absolutely go for it

The Lone Desolator's backstory:
What she tells people (she has practiced this speech in the mirror):
“I come from a remote village to the east. My father grew apples and my mother was good with medicine. When I was a child, exploring out past my father’s orchard, a group of men came and lit fire to everything I held dear. I saw the face of their leader, a man called Anders, as I trembled from the brambles. My family was gone, and I was alone. Since that day, I have trained my mind and body so that I may face Anders again, not as a frightened child, but instead as… the Lone Desolator.”
The actual story:
The Lone Desolator was actually born Maeve Caldwell, third and youngest child of the noble Jamison Caldwell, cousin of Lord Wyllyck Caldwell. Wyllyck is a man whom the city regards as philanthropic and charitable, and he was recently considered for the council of four in Baldur’s Gate, but was passed over in favor of Ulder Ravengard. While not in much contact with Lord Wyllyck, Jamison Caldwell and his family still enjoy the perks that come with this old name. They own a sprawling mansion paid for by vast apple orchards that they manage outside the upper city using cheap labor. Maeve was raised mostly by her nanny, a healer named Nettle. She was happy, outside of being a tomboy in Upper City life, but one night she found out about some of her family’s misdeeds that had been swept under the rug. The one that stuck closely with her was about a pesticide used in her family’s orchards caused many hundreds of workers to get sick or die. It was covered up by the Caldwell family and their associates, particularly a Fixer by the name of “Anders”. After realizing she could no longer stand ignorantly by, she ran away. But she was just a kid when she left. Even if it was easy for her to blend into the massive lower city of Baldur’s Gate and lose the people sent to find her, she couldn’t fend for herself for long.
Maeve, now already calling herself The Lone Desolator at 10 years old, found both the shelter she needed and training she wanted at Rosymorn Monestary, a dangerous home for a little human girl. But she stayed outside, out of the way, and very quiet, and one day she made a friend. An old gith monk trained in the way of the open hand caught Maeve out behind the kitchens, stealing rotten vegetable tops. He never told Maeve his name, so she simply called him “Master”. She learned very quickly how to not only fend for herself, but thrive by herself. The catch was that she and “Master” had to train far away from the monastery, because the githyanki living inside would never approve of teaching Maeve, even if “Master” was old and therefore no valuable asset to Vlaakith. But they were very careful, and for years this was Maeve’s life. Until one sudden afternoon when “Master” was caught and killed. Again, Maeve ran away, still too weak to fight off more than a single githyanki warrior. She returned to Baldur’s Gate with her well rehearsed story in mind, ready to pursue as much justice as she feels needs dealing out.

Blythe's backstory:
* Born in an entertainment house, called the Eclipse Teahouse, to the mother/manager of the house, named Lady Celine. Lady Celine wanted a changeling child for the house specifically. She paid a changeling man for a chance to sleep with him and get pregnant and thus, Blythe was born.
* Blythe grew up with "they" pronouns. They were also very spoiled by the aunties and uncles who worked in the house. Lady Celine did not play a motherly role; instead Blythe was raised like the precious child of all the employees.
* Blythe spent their entire childhood in their "true form" white body. Lady Celine told them to be proud of it, because it cost her a lot of money.
* Blythe was taught how to dance, sing, and make conversation very early. Once they became a young adult, they entertained patrons like any other employee. However, all the money they earned went right to Lady Celine.
* Blythe was a very popular attraction, because they could take on "requested" forms for patrons.
* Blythe's best friend was a water genasi girl about ten years older than them, who went by the name Lorelei in the house. She was like a real big sister and Blythe thought she was so so cool. Lorelei often told Blythe how she was saving money, even going so far as to steal from Lady Celine, so that she could run away and marry a rich noble somewhere in the country. Eventually, Lady Celine found out and Lorelei was ousted.
* Blythe became disillusioned with the house they'd grown up in after Lorelei left. It's been years since they've seen her, but Blythe eventually ran away with the intention of finding Lorelei, getting a lot of money, and buying an estate for them to live in.
* Blythe took on the water genasi form very similar to Lorelei as they attempted to find her, a bit like a walking missing persons poster.
* Blythe travels around, rubbing elbows with nobility, in a constant effort to find Lorelei, whom they still believe did marry a rich lord at some point.
* Traveling also helps them gain more forms, and thus build their repertoire even more.

Wendell's backstory:
Wendell was adopted as a toddler by a family of halflings named Erling and Berthe Tinselfoot. They already had a young daughter named Winnie, but brought Wendell in, named him, and raised him on a relatively isolated farm in Longsaddle, near the city of Luskan.
Wendell remembers very little of his early childhood. It’s mainly a blur of his time on the Tinselfoot farm, nothing earlier than six or seven years old (though it should be noted he has no idea of his actual age or birthday). He was a quiet, solemn kid who dragged his feet (hooves) about doing farm chores and would instead sneak into the fields with a book to read the day away. He particularly enjoyed stories about paladins slaying devils and demons, or adventurers getting lost in the faewild and falling prey to fae trickery. He tried to cut off his horns at around age 11, and was stopped by his mother after cutting one. It never fully grew back. He was uncomfortable with his tiefling appearance, especially since other tieflings didn’t seem to have hooves like him, but he has more or less gotten used to his body as he grew up.
Wendell (early 20s) went to the same shop in Luskan three days in a row to study a scroll of plane shift. It was 500gp and he couldn’t afford it. He would clean for two hours in exchange for one hour of study time. On the fourth day when he was studying, the shopkeeper told him someone (Roben Klement) was buying every spell scroll in stock and he had to hand it over. Wendell, frustrated after having just spent time cleaning, asked if Roben could wait a while longer. Roben let Wendell keep the scroll. When Wendell said he didn’t need any handouts, Roben replied that it was just a gift from one magic enthusiast to another and left. Wendell caught up to him and asked to work to pay for it, like he had done at the shop. Roben says he always has components to process if he wanted to come over.
After a few weeks, Wendell casually mentions he wants to go to school but can’t afford it. Roben offers to pay, Wendell declines. Over the next week, the Tinselfoot farm gains dozens of new clients wanting to stock their produce and dairy, the Tinselfoots become quite wealthy very quickly. Wendell is suddenly able to go to school. Roben denies involvement but Wendell knows better.
Wendell is grateful but not stupid. He is very dedicated to Roben, despite knowing very little about him. Wendell also knows this debt will likely need to be repaid at some point in the future, not with money, but more likely with favors or allegiance, which at this point he is happy to do.
Wendell maintains a small apartment in Luskan, and frequently travels between there, Longsaddle, Candlekeep, and Silverymoon. His knowledge (and level) come from diligent study, NOT real world application.

Update abt two months later: i LOVE my job but god it Drains Me. I wish i had just one more day of weekend. But ik as i get more used to working full time again, my body will adjust. Hopefully enough to where i wanna draw on my ipad at night instead of just blasting thru genshin dailies and conking out at 8pm.
Anyway i appreciate u being here through just me posting iphone xr photos of doodles i do between customers.
i got a job finally FINALLY after being out of work since july. But instead of an animation job this is gonna be a government desk job.
Tbh i feel extremely relieved to no longer be thinking about trying to find another animation gig. If you’re looking to break into the field or go to anim school right now, by all means dont let me stop you from following your dreams but its just about the worst time in the world to try. I think i know one colleague right now with an industry job.
Bonus is my anim burnout has been a long time coming and the insane lack of work really just forced me to look outside the box id put myself into and think about what i want. I dont think i want to draw all week every day at a consistent rate for anyone anymore, not even if it was for me alone. I think i just want a stable normal non gig based job with health insurance 💀 so i can doodle whatever i want twice a week
Anyway this isnt my normal shit i talk about but if yall want a pretty cynical point of view about the near future of the american animation industry im here ^_^
