Did y'all know that there are like dozens of kinds of lightning bugs in the US? And that scientists are only just now discovering how many there are? And they tend to be extremely localized so some are INCREDIBLY rare and only found near this one specific farm pond or something? EEEEEEEEE LIGHTNING BUGS

The Mole Cowry (Talparia talpa) looks like a geode or a messy afro surrounding a lump of fire or an evil eye awakening on the sea floor or… some other weird thing.
Actually it’s a cowry which reaches 10 cm long and has an Indo-Pacific distribution from east Africa to Hawaii.
They have a silky smooth shell which can be completely covered by a fleshy mantle, which in this case is covered in peculiar fingery things.
