oh also FUCK DISNEY from literally giving Luca ZERO PROMOTION, like... it's not even on the homepage of Disney+ and it came out yesterday! I had to type in the whole ass title just to find it and at first I thought I was mistaken & that it hadn't been released yet!!
And yet they had no problem shoving their mediocre Cruella remake in my face for 30 extra dollars smh 😒

So I was watching some scenes from Luca again, and I noticed something…
Alberto has a scar on his human skin on his arm!
Tumblr media
But on his sea monster skin, it is most definitely still somewhat fresh…
Tumblr media
I had a feeling that the spear had actually hit him in the beginning, and this proves it I guess! Poor kiddo. :(

Still about Luca because I can’t stop thinking about it… yeah maybe it’s not intentional representation, yeah maybe it’s valid only if you go by the death of the author theory, but you know what? I’m gay and I’m Italian and I’m 36 years old and if a movie like Luca had come out when I was in my early teens I would have DIED because damn, at 12 I couldn’t even imagine that being affectionate with a boy, liking a boy, holding a boy, forming a deep bond with a boy could be something so sweet and innocent and natural. At 12, back in the 90s, what I felt towards boys made me feel wrong, like I was creepy or dirty. Even just a hint of a relationship like that between Luca and Alberto would have made me feel less alone and less wrong.
Queer people were once queer children, even before discovering anything about sex. Queer children, even those who still don’t know themselves, especially those, deserve to see themselves in their heroes. The representation in Luca may have been accidental, but it’s so, so important.

The scene where Luca outs Alberto as a sea monster to keep himself safe is already a gut-punching scene, but the way the animation changes for a split second as Alberto slowly gets out of the water in sea monster form and the sky darkens behind him to show him as something terrifying that everyone has the right to be afraid of??? Art.

i was watching Luca with a friend and as soon as the old ladies put their umbrellas down and revealed that they were also sea creatures, her first reaction was calling them "lesbian fish grandmas" and now I can't/refuse to stop thinking about it
Tumblr media
look at them they're fucking amazing

Ok but Luca can definitely be seen as a metaphor for being lgbt and what really sold me on that was when the two old ladies put down their umbrellas and let the rain touch them and were outed as sea monsters too. I kid you not as soon as I saw that my first and imminent thought was “oh they’re a lesbian couple!” and you can’t convince me that they’re not, that they weren’t living in the closet waiting for the day that it was safe to be themselves both literally and figuratively.

Luca was a beautiful allegory about the experience or LGBT+ children, but there was also another layer to it that may not be obvious to non-Italians, and that is
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Migrants.
Many migrants and refugees get to Europe through Italy by sea. It's a dangerous journey, and many die in the crossing. People who work to save them often face scorn because sadly, some would rather see them drown than reach the coast.
Those who make it to land often face racism, violence, mistrust and/or the threat of deportation after risking their lives to make it there. "CLOSE THE PORTS" is a sadly common slogan, much like "build the wall". Like they're some kind of threat, coming from the sea.
It is not the main allegory there and it's easily missed, but I feel it was worth pointing out for all non-Italians out there.
