Lemon Tree Lane
There was a backdoor in the small laundry room. It wasn’t locked. Just as Lizzy was about to reach for it, a voice asked her, “did you figure it out this time?”
Her ears pinned back. “Leave me alone!”
Lizzy flung open the door and stepped outside – up the path towards the house on Lemon Tree lane.
“Alright,” says Lizzy, holding the camera out in front of her. “We made it everyone, the house on Lemon Tree Lane. Time to find out if it’s really haunted.”
The fur on the back of her neck stands on end, and her ears twitch. The house that sits in front of her is old and decrepit, with wood that is bleached by weather and sun, and glass windows that are so coated in filth there’s no way to see inside of them. Even from the end of the path, it’s ominous looking.
“I’m going to be doing something really, really stupid tonight,” says Lizzy, to her audience. She keeps the camera trained on the house but speaks loudly enough that she knows it will pick up the audio. “I’m going in there. I’ll be video taping all of it. It’s something that I’ve got to do. I hope that you all will come along for the ride!”
She clicks the record button off and tucks the camera back into her satchel. Her tail lashes as she starts up the old dirt path to the house on Lemon Tree Lane. She knows all about the stories that inhabit this place. The way that people have disappeared in the past. The things that strangers have seen through the windows.
“Alright, Lizzy.” She tells herself. “None of that matters. You’ve got to do this. No backing out now.”
She adjusts the straps of her backpack and then starts up the walk, towards the house. There’s no one else around. A few old trees, a large stretch of sun-yellowed grass. Her boots drag through the dirt, sending up clouds of red around her.
It stains her fur, makes her nose itch. The dust inside of this place is going to be even worse, and she knows it.
But that doesn’t matter, either.
Lizzy already made her deal. Now she has to see it through to the end.
-*-
Welcome to the final day of the Writeblr Summerfest! We’ve had so many amazing things happen this year – even if there were a few tech problems (thanks, Tumblr!) and I hope that you were able to have some fun, make some friends, and take part in a few events.
Just like we have each Lemon Tree Lane update before, we have a prompt for you today.
Put a twist in your story. It can be a twist ending, a twist plot point, a twist anything. Use your minkie – and consider getting one from Mother, because today’s the last day for it! - or use your own Ocs.
Have fun. Get writing. And always, always think of Lizzy when you visit haunted houses!

MINKIE EXPLORER ADOPTABLES
Hello, everyone! This commission sheet was drafted by @mothersart and sent for posting here, so everyone can see it! She has asked that all contact be done through this blog, to prevent it from clogging her normal inbox.
Mother is kindly doing a special commission for those taking part in the Summerfest this year (or just those that think it’s kind of neat!) and we would love if you could help spread the word and support her. This is our first time having a guest artist at the Summerfest, and we hope to be able to bring in even more of them next year!
EDIT - as of 8/3, Mother has 3 available slots! This number will change frequently through the event, as she completes adoptables and reevaluates her delivery time. Slots fill up fast when they are available, so if you’re hoping to get a minkie this month, make sure to send @writeblrsummerfest a message!
                    MINKIE EXPLORER ADOPTABLES
Minkie’s are a fun humanoid cat critter! They have clothes. They have bags. They have items! This commission for is an ‘explorer’ that goes to Lemon Tree Lane. It’s an ADOPTABLE commission, meaning you get to permanently own and do whatever you would like with the drawn character, but you don’t get a say in what they look like.
The character sheet comes with your minkie character, and a few items that they might have on hand while exploring.
$10 gets you a total grab-bag surprise minky explorer, you don’t get to customize it but you get to own the character forever onward!
$15 lets you pick a ‘theme’ for the explorer; do you love pastel goth? Cottagecore? Skateboarding? Let me know, and it will be the inspiration for your minky (ps, you still own them)!
Message @writeblrsummerfest to claim your Minkie Explorer adoptable! Examples below! Payment through cashapp or paypal!

Free Writing Contest
Welcome to the Writeblr Summerfest’s free writing contest! As the name implies, it’s a writing contest. And it’s free!
It also lasts ten days so make sure to get your writing hat on!
THE RULES
This contest has a 500 words minimum, and a 1k word maximum. It has a prompt, seen below, inspired by this years theme: haunted house. It has three tiers of winners, as most traditional contests do, but everyone who enters will get a free promo. The story must fit the prompt. The story must meet the word count criteria (between 500 and 1,000 words). The story can contain violence, foul language, blood/gore, but should not be overtly explicit.
HOW TO ENTER
Write your story. Post it using the tag ‘summerfest contest’. In your original post, @ the summerfest blog – then send the post as a DM to the Summerfest blog so it can be properly cataloged. Please keep in mind this last step is the most important; if a link to the story post isn’t submitted via ask or DM, the story entry won’t be counter!
THE PROMPT
Your family has just purchased an old creaky house out on the hill. You hate it, but only because it’s drafty, smells like mold, and has a serious leak in the attic. Unfortunately, everyone in town hates it, too. You’re pinned down by someone, who insists on telling you the story of who is haunting the house… The Prompt: what story is told? Who, or what, is supposedly haunting the house? Is it even a ghost? Are they friendly or mean? Is it something else entirely? Take this prompt in as wild of a direction, or as straight forward of a direction, as you would like.
THE PRIZES
Let’s be honest, this is what everyone is waiting for! We’re going to break it down into a few important notes of consideration.
The contest accepts entries between the 20th of August ‘23 and the 30th of August ‘23. The winner will be announced on the 1st of September.
Prizes will be posted/delivered between the 15h of September and the 20th of September.
1st Place: Full body flat color art piece by @abalonetea
2nd Place: A mock cover for a WIP of your choice, along with a comment filled reblog spree of a tag of your choice.
3rd Place: Several moodboards inspired by your story and your characters.
All questions will happily be answered!

We haven't done character questions in a while. Let's change that!
What's your character's favorite thing to eat?
What's their least favorite?
What is a holiday food they like?
What food did they eat the most growing up? Do they still have access to it? Do they miss it?

Let's talk about the weather! This might seem mundane, but we at Summerfest have found that there are often important scenes that take place where the weather is integral to what's going on. Is there a scene like that in your wip?
Talk about it here!
