This article was originally written to explain how to increase the mouse tracking speed on Chrome OS devices (Chromebook and Chromebook Pixel) but as I was writing it I discovered two other issues that I’m sure others have experienced.

The Problem

After connecting my Apple Magic Mouse to my Chromebook Pixel via Bluetooth I noticed that the tracking speed was rather slow. I navigated to the lower right hand side of my screen, clicked on my account photo and selected Settings. Then I navigated to “Touchpad and Mouse Settings” where I expected to see a tracking option, but none existed!

It Works Perfectly! Though, I would give it a 5 star review, if only there was an option that allowed you to look at the coordinates in a corner of the screen. It is very annoying to look all around when gaming, and i installed this so people don't keep assuming I auto click. See, im guessing that if i DID have autoclickers or some cheat like that, the coordinates would go bouncing all over.

The Solution

Directly above the “Touchpad and Mouse Settings” option is the setting! I simply overlooked it.

The New Problem

Unfortunately, I quickly discovered two other issues though. The tracking speed option really isn’t as fast as I’d like, and Australian scrolling doesn’t work on the Apple Magic Mouse!

If I identify a solution or an update comes out I’ll update this post.

The New Solution

Sadly, I haven’t found one. This is something that will require development to the core Chrome OS. I suspect others have submitted this as a feature or bug report though.

Google have since pulled this update with no explanation.

Google has released a new version of their operating system for Chrome device. Version 27 brings many improvements to the Launcher and File Manager.

Since the Aura Desktop was released for Chrome OS last year, the Chrome team have been slow rolling out improvements. Today’s update sees many improvements and changes to the desktop.

What’s New in Chrome OS 27

Support has been added for Panel windows. This feature lets certain applications, such as Google’s new Hangouts app, to appear ‘docked’ in the Launcher so they can be accessed at all times, regardless of what you’re doing.

The launcher can now be positioned on the left, right and top of the screen; to suit your workflow. Right-click on the launcher to bring up positioning options.

Another launcher-related tweak is the introduction of app lists to open items. Apps in the launcher will now display a list of all the open instances of that particular app and the “Chrome” icon will display a list of all the open tabs (think of Windows 7 jump lists).

If your trackpad supports it, you can use horizontal three finger scrub to move between tabs.

The File Manager now has a new folder hierarchy display, making it faster to navigate to the right folder. Also, the search field will now autocomplete.

Hardware support has also been improved in this release.

Memory management optimisation has been achieved on low memory devices, benefitting users of the early Chromebook models.

Enhanced support for common wireless touchpads/mice has been added, including the ability to display battery indicator of a wireless mouse. Users of Apple’s Magic Trackpad and Magic Mouse will be pleased to know that these are supported, too.

Additionally, Pepper Flash has been updated to 11.7.700.202-r2 and GTalk plugin has been updated to 3.15.2.0. The Chrome Office Viewer extension has also been updated.

Finally, this release includes many bug fixes, performance and security improvements.

Like with every Chrome OS release, it also includes the latest updates to the Chrome browser. Check out our news post about the Chrome 27 update which is included in this release of Chrome OS.

Chrome OS 27.0.1453.103 is available now for all Chrome devices, including the Samsung Chromebook. Devices will be receive updates over the next several days.

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis is a 2016 memoir by J. D. Vance about the Appalachian values of his Kentucky family and their relation to the social problems of his hometown of Middletown, Ohio, where his mother's parents moved when they were young.

Vance describes his upbringing and family background while growing up in the city of Middletown, Ohio, the third largest city in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. He writes about a family history of poverty and low-paying, physical jobs that have since disappeared or worsened in their guarantees, and compares this life with his perspective after leaving it.

Though Vance was raised in Middletown, his mother and her family were from Breathitt County, Kentucky. Their Appalachian values include traits like loyalty and love of country, despite social issues including violence and verbal abuse. He recounts his grandparents' alcoholism and abuse, and his unstable mother's history of drug addictions and failed relationships. Vance's grandparents eventually reconciled and became his de facto guardians. He was pushed by his tough but loving grandmother, and eventually Vance was able to leave Middletown to attend Ohio State University and Yale Law School.(1)

Alongside his personal history, Vance raises questions such as the responsibility of his family and people for their own misfortune. Vance blames hillbilly culture and its supposed encouragement of social rot. Comparatively, he feels that economic insecurity plays a much lesser role. To lend credence to his argument, Vance regularly relies on personal experience. As a grocery store checkout cashier, he watched welfare recipients talk on cell phones although the working Vance could not afford one. His resentment of those who seemed to profit from poor behavior while he struggled, especially combined with his values of personal responsibility and tough love, is presented as a microcosm of the reason for Appalachia's overall political swing from strong Democratic Party to strong Republican affiliations. Likewise, he recounts stories intended to showcase a lack of work ethic including the story of a man who quit after expressing dislike over his job's hours and posted to social media about the 'Obama economy', as well as a co-worker, with a pregnant girlfriend, who would skip work.(1)

The book was popularized by an interview with the author published by The American Conservative in late July 2016. The volume of requests briefly disabled the website. Halfway through the next month, The New York Times wrote that the title had remained in the top ten Amazon bestsellers since the interview's publication.(1)

Vance credits his Yale contract law professor Amy Chua as the 'authorial godmother' of the book.(2)

The book reached the top of The New York Times Best Seller list in August 2016(3) and January 2017.(4) Many journalists criticized Vance for generalizing too much from his personal upbringing in suburban Ohio.(5)(6)(7)(8)

American Conservative contributor and blogger Rod Dreher expressed admiration for Hillbilly Elegy, saying that Vance 'draws conclusions…that may be hard for some people to take. But Vance has earned the right to make those judgments. This was his life. He speaks with authority that has been extremely hard won.'(9) The following month, Dreher posted about why liberals loved the book.(10)New York Post columnist and editor of CommentaryJohn Podhoretz described the book as among the year's most provocative.(11) The book was positively received by conservatives such as National Review columnist Mona Charen(12) and National Review editor and Slate columnist Reihan Salam.(13)

By contrast, Jared Yates Sexton of Salon criticized Vance for his 'damaging rhetoric' and for endorsing policies used to 'gut the poor.' He argues that Vance 'totally discounts the role racism played in the white working class's opposition to President Obama.'(14) Sarah Jones of The New Republic mocked Vance as 'the false prophet of Blue America,' dismissing him as 'a flawed guide to this world' and the book as little more than 'a list of myths about welfare queens repackaged as a primer on the white working class.'(6)The New York Times wrote that Vance's direct confrontation of a social taboo is admirable regardless of whether the reader agrees with his conclusions. The newspaper writes that Vance's subject is despair, and his argument is more generous in that it blames fatalism and learned helplessness rather than indolence.(1) Bob Hutton of Jacobin wrote that Vance's argument relied on circular logic, ignored existing scholarship on Appalachian poverty, and was 'primarily a work of self-congratulation.'(5)Sarah Smarsh with The Guardian noted that 'most downtrodden whites are not conservative male Protestants from Appalachia' and called into question Vance's generalizations about the white working class from his personal upbringing.(7)

A 2017 Brookings Institution report noted that, “JD Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy became a national bestseller for its raw, emotional portrait of growing up in and eventually out of a poor rural community riddled by drug addiction and instability.' Vance's account anecdotally confirmed the report's conclusion that family stability is essential to upward mobility.(15) The book provoked a response in the form of an anthology, Appalachian Reckoning: A Region Responds to Hillbilly Elegy, edited by Anthony Harkins and Meredith McCarroll. The essays in the volume criticize Vance for making broad generalizations and reproducing myths about poverty.(8)

Film adaptation(edit)

A film adaptation was released in select theaters in the United States on November 11, 2020, then digitally on Netflix on November 24. It was directed by Ron Howard and stars Glenn Close, Amy Adams, Gabriel Basso(16)(17) and Haley Bennett. Although a few days of filming were planned for the book's setting of Middletown, Ohio,(18) much of the filming in the summer of 2019 was in Atlanta, Clayton and Macon, Georgia, using the code name 'IVAN.'(19)(20)

In a democracy, the people have to have some faith in two propositions: First, that we can change and change for the better. With reason and collective action, we can order our society and progress. Second, that the mechanics of government are comprehensible to the layman. That is, that a non-politician can govern.

Dr. Acton was the loved “Dr Amy” to many — a wholesome, upbeat, dedicated public servant. To the far and reactionary right, she was a scolding schoolmarm, the personification of the nanny state. Alas, she exited public service, and the Senate race, because to be any sort of public figure these days is to invite character assassination and vilification. She couldn’t take it, and who can blame her? Harry Truman’s hot kitchen has become a hell.

But if the normal, sane person cannot take the heat of today’s politics, how are we to test the second proposition? How do we hang on to the ideal of self-government?

While your PC is restarting, take the time to also refresh your network connection. To do that, you want to unplug your modem and/or router from the power outlet or strip for about 30 seconds.

Disable your antivirus and/or firewall.

For some, disabling their security software like antivirus or similar fixes Remote Play issues. If your computer’s firewall is active, you should consider turning off that too for testing purposes. Or, you can make an exception in your firewall settings to allow Remote Play to establish a connection. Use Google to know how to do this suggestion.

Delete and reinstall Remote Play.

If all the possible causes have been checked and not one of the solutions above has helped so far, consider deleting and reinstalling Remote Play.

Unity WebGL needs to be hosted on a webserver. If you want to use compression, and I strongly advise you to do so, you have to configure your web server to host those files with the correct content-type as described here. The place for aspiring game creators to share their latest WebGL creation. Gain inspiration through ongoing showcases and find thousands of FPS, Karting, 2D Platformer and other creations with Unity. No experience needed, just jump in for the chance to be featured!

Every amount of screen-space a player gives you is a gift – it’s a horrible waste to present your webGL content using the Unity default templates. It would be much nicer to have our game fill up 100% of the window space we have available: a full browser window Unity webGL game.

An example of what I’m talking about is here (with an extra header and footer).

It’s easiest to set this up starting from the ‘minimal’ player template, but you can add this onto any template, or better yet make your own.

The Set-up Process

All you need to do is add these rules into the “style” tag in the head of the index.html file (or create a new CSS file and link it in if you prefer to keep things professional).

The first part removes all padding and margins, to make sure nothing is adding extra white space. Browsers want even unstyled text to be readable so by default there is spacing around elements that we need to remove.

The second part tells the canvas the game is rendering onto to stretch the full size of the browser window.

The “position: absolute;” rule stops your game from trying to maintain its aspect ratio, allowing the height to fully stretch.

If you have any other divs or whatever objects wrapping your canvas, make sure to give them “height: 100%; width: 100%;” as well.

That’s all there is to it!

Tips and Pitfalls

The internal resolution of your unity build will automatically update as the browser resized. This is good because you don’t need to worry about manually setting the resolution and maintaining the aspect ratio, but on the other hand it does mean you have no control over render resolution and performance will decrease as the window size increases.

Don’t forget to give your body a “background-color” as well, otherwise the screen will flash white before your canvas loads up.

If you’re using a slightly different structure and have problems with scrollbars appearing and messing up your document, add “overflow: hidden;” to the body.

Setting these CSS rules through the web inspector to test them doesn’t always work for me, but when they’re in the file it works fine.

This styling makes it nice and easy to embed your build as an iframe, letting you choose a resolution later. This is great if you plan on uploading your game to Newgrounds, Kongregate, etc.

The resolution you set in ‘player settings’ will now be completely ignored, so don’t stress about it.

Hopefully you now have a working full browser window Unity WebGL build – shoot me a message if something’s not working! Next time I’ll write about how to replace the default progress bar.

The pipeline problem

A major challenge for marketers responsible for marketing high-value goods like cars and luxury items is the need for multiple content production pipelines. These are needed to support numerous endpoints (e.g., mobile apps, mobile web, desktop) for product configurators, resulting in duplicate efforts. These pipelines are costly to create and maintain, especially with the frequency of product updates. In the end, work is repeated and paid for multiple times.

Quality Profiles with Unity Forma

Through a feature called Quality Profiles, you can manage multiple model resolutions, material representations, and graphics settings of your product configurator. This unlocks the ability to create experiences for multiple endpoints from one master model.

Instead of multiple projects, you can centralize this work into a single content pipeline and drive major efficiencies. It paves the way for significant cost savings, product consistency across all marketing touchpoints, and a more holistic customer experience.

Unity offers Scriptable Render Pipelines to match the performance of the target device at the best quality. Unity Forma manages these inside a single project.

High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP)

HDRP is one of Unity’s pre-built scriptable render pipelines. It delivers performant, high-fidelity graphics on high-end hardware, including PCs as well as web browsers using our Furioos cloud streaming service. You can see an HDRP configurator running on Furioos here. HDRP offers the highest rendering quality and also includes features like real-time ray tracing (Preview).

Universal Render Pipeline (URP)

URP is the other pre-built scriptable render pipeline, offering full platform reach on all targets supported by Unity, such as mobile devices (Android and iOS) and PC. It does not replace or encompass HDRP. It delivers powerful graphics and real-time performance on performance-constrained platforms, while making tradeoffs in regards to lighting and shading.

WebGL

With optimized assets, the Universal Render Pipeline content can be deployed to the WebGL platform to run interactive experiences from Unity in a web browser.

For the Unity Forma Sample Project, we’ve created a WebGL profile that showcases the interactive car configurator of the AVIERA vehicle model (provided courtesy of Genesis Design). With this highly optimized asset, Unity runs directly in the browser. This is not an export to another WebGL renderer. The experience is especially great on mobile devices (for iOS, iPhone 7 and later are supported).

WebGL profile: How we did it

To create this WebGL profile, we worked with our friends at Light & Shadows. Monday to do list. We invited them to share their data optimization process in their own words. Read on to learn how you can use tools from Pixyz, a Unity partner, to automate this work in your own projects.

For our team at Light & Shadows, Unity Forma is an intuitive tool capable of creating high-quality marketing content. Indeed, it makes work easier and faster.

To power interactive content on Unity Forma, it is important to prepare and optimize the 3D data as much as possible. This process reduces the weight of 3D files (e.g., FBX, gITF, GLB) so that they can be used on different platforms. The more the file is optimized, the faster it will load on a platform.

Our team at Light & Shadows pays particular attention to this phase because it is pivotal to the end-user experience. Indeed, in addition to size reduction, the optimization enables files to be usable on WebGL and mobile platforms – whose limited capacities prevent the processing of large files – without compromising quality.

The first thing we did was tessellate the CAD file with a quality adapted to the needs of the project (a heavy mesh and a less heavy mesh in terms of quantity of triangles) without sacrificing the visual rendering. This process was performed in Pixyz Studio, the leading solution for preparing 3D CAD data. It was thus possible to export a high-quality FBX file, suitable for all 3D content creation software (3ds Max, Maya, Blender, etc.).

Low mesh

The next step was the preparation in 3ds Max. We cleaned up the last useless meshes weighing down the file. Then, instancing was used for all elements allowing it. Technically, the idea is to produce an identical copy of a mesh and its properties, thus reducing the final size of the file.

For example, we chose to cut the vehicle’s length to make a symmetrical instance from the exterior. We also instantiated the wheels of the vehicle because rim meshes are heavy elements in terms of the number of triangles and file weight.

Finally, since the initial project was created in HDRP, a URP profile was needed. For that, Unity Forma automatically assigned all the materials by naming patterns and kept the variants, logic, and cameras between the profiles in sync. To run the demo on iOS, a Gamma lighting workflow was chosen. For this, 3D artists had adjusted some materials and the environment lighting. Unity can define texture resolution per platform, and lower resolutions were selected to run within the limits of a mobile browser. The post-effects were disabled, and instead, occlusion maps were baked for parts of the model.

German infosec bod Mike Kuketz spotted LastPass's trackers in analysis produced by Exodus, which describes itself as 'a non-profit organization led by hacktivists (whose) purpose is to help people get a better understanding of the Android applications tracking issues.'

The Exodus report on LastPass shows seven trackers in the Android app, including four from Google for the purpose of analytics and crash reporting, as well as others from AppsFlyer, MixPanel, and Segment. Segment, for instance, gathers data for marketing teams, and claims to offer a 'single view of the customer', profiling users and connecting their activity across different platforms, presumably for tailored adverts.

LastPass has many free users – is it a problem if its owner seeks to monetise them in some way? Kuketz said it is. Typically, the way trackers like this work is that the developer compiles code from the tracking provider into their application. The gathered information can be used to build up a profile of the user's interests from their activities, and target them with ads.

Even the app developers do not know what data is collected and transmitted to the third-party providers, said Kuketz, and the integration of proprietary code could introduce security risks and unexpected behaviour, as well as being a privacy risk. These things do not belong in password managers, which are security-critical, he said.

Kuketz also investigated what data is transmitted by inspecting the network traffic. He found that this included details about the device being used, the mobile operator, the type of LastPass account, the Google Advertising ID (which can connect data about the user across different apps). During use, the data also shows when new passwords are created and what type they are. Kuketz did not suggest that actual passwords or usernames are transmitted, but did note the absence of any opt-out dialogs, or information for the user about the data being sent to third parties. In his view, the presence of the trackers demonstrates a suboptimal attitude to security. Kuketz recommended changing to a different password manager, such as the open-source KeePass.

LastPass to limit fans of free password manager to one device type only – computer or mobile – from next month

Do all password apps contain such trackers? Not according to Exodus. 1Password has none. KeePass has none. The open-source Bitwarden has two for Google Firebase analytics and Microsoft Visual Studio crash reporting. Dashlane has four. LastPass does appear to have more than its rivals. And yes, lots of smartphone apps have trackers: today, we're talking about LastPass.

Password managers are essential for most users since the number of passwords to be managed exceeds our ability to remember them, and the complex passwords needed for security are particularly hard to memorise. Using the same password across multiple services is poor practice because it increases the impact if a password is stolen or inadvertently disclosed.

The discussion about trackers in LastPass comes at a bad time. Earlier this month the company (which is owned by LogMeIn) crippled its free offering to support only a single device type, and many users have said they would switch as a result – like user Mattias Ahnberg, who wrote on Twitter: 'This means I will finally migrate away to 1Password instead of being blocked by such a limitation that you're adding.' Losing free users may even have been the intention, but the tracking issues affect paid users as well, which would be more of a concern.

A LastPass spokesperson told us: 'No sensitive personally identifiable user data or vault activity could be passed through these trackers. These trackers collect limited aggregated statistical data about how you use LastPass which is used to help us improve and optimize the product.

'All LastPass users, regardless of browser or device, are given the option to opt-out of these analytics in their LastPass Privacy Settings, located in their account here: Account Settings > Show Advanced Settings > Privacy. We are continuously reviewing our existing processes and working to make them better to comply, and exceed, the requirements of current applicable data protection standards.' ®

Monday Todoist

Todoist has been my task manager of choice for a few months now, and while I still find that I’m missing some features that would make it even better (URL schemes, Start Dates, etc.), I still find that it has a lot to offer that many task managers out there don’t (which I outlined in an earlier post). But perhaps the thing that I’ve found most appealing is the ability to use multiple labels for a task.

I treat Todoist’s labels as modes, as per my productivity approach The NOW Year Formula. Other apps (Asana, for example) use the term “tags” rather than labels or modes, but I treat them essentially in the same manner. Modes are what add real value to my tasks, and the labelling feature in Todoist really lets me add a ton of value to each and every task I add to the app.

I have used energy levels as modes for a long time (ever since Sven Fechner delivered a talk that drove home how useful they are when used as GTD contexts), and with Todoist I can now attach more conventional modes/labels to a task alongside energy levels.

Here are some of the categories I use when creating labels:

Location

As you can see in the image above, “Share Mikes on Mics” is a task that requires Low Energy and the location that I can complete the task in is “Social” (as in “social networks”). I can’t do that in OmniFocus, although I could create Perspectives that shape a similar workflow. Still, creating perspectives in OmniFocus can be challenging for the novice user, whereas adding additional labels to tasks in Todoist is incredibly simple.

I define locations as places that exist both in the offline and online world, mainly because I spend much of my time working from home. I only use “Home” as a label for tasks that live in the project “Household Maintenance” because it allows me to clearly separate my work life from my home life. I don’t use a label called “Work” because I find that to be too vague. Instead, I’ll use labels for the apps I need to be using for certain tasks (Evernote for idea management is a great example) or I’ll use a more generic label like “Email” or “Calls” for tasks that require me to use a phone (landline or mobile) or email (Postbox or Dispatch). All a location-based label is designed to do is tell me where I need to be to complete that task, whether it’s a physical space or an app.

Time

I only started using time-based labels recently, and it was actually after dealing with a few Productivityist Coaching clients who felt that they would work well for them. After experimenting with them myself, I found they can be really beneficial for those moments where you don’t have much time (between meetings, during a commute, etc.) but want to move certain things forward.

Useful labels that are time-based can be as follows:

@-2 or @-2_Minutes: This aligns really nicely with the GTD mentality of doing something if it takes less than two minutes. That said, you probably should have done it when you captured it – or if you’re using The Strikethrough System it shouldn’t even make its way into Todoist if it takes two minutes or less. (Note: I use the “less than” sign rather than the minus sign, but doing so here adds weird markup text.)

@-5 or @-5_Minutes: This works well for those tasks that wind up in Todoist because they will take longer than two minutes, but won’t take a ton of time to complete. I find these are most commonly used when making certain phone calls or sending certain emails.

@25+ or @25+Minutes: This label is great for tasks that you know will take some time to do, and I use 25 as the minute value because that means it will take longer than one “pomodoro” to complete. Reserve these tasks when you know you have the ability to work on them for an extended period of time. (You can use this label as a guideline to help you time chunk in your calendar as well.)

I tend to pair these labels up with my energy level labels because I can really hone in on what tasks I can do with both the energy I have in me and the time I have available. I use time-based labels sparingly, but have them there for when I do need them. You may want to use them more often, especially if you’re inclined to have a time-based mindset over a task-based mindset (which a task manager, when used effectively, should help to shift).

People

When working with others, you may not always be ready to assign them tasks. This might be because you’ve yet to fully commit to the task or you don’t have all of the information they’ll need to do it properly available yet. That’s when using a label for individuals can come in handy.

In the image above, you’ll notice that the label “@ZA” is used, and that label represented by Virtual Assistant that I had hired through Zirtual (which has since shuttered). I actually assigned that to her at this point (as indicated by the red “ED” at the right hand side of the row), but if I hadn’t assigned the task then I’d still be able to search for tasks that I think I may want to assign to my assistant through the label. I try not to be specific when using labels for individuals because when it comes to assigning tasks I can easily see who was assigned it in that red box. So I’ll use labels that represent departments rather than individuals.

I also create projects that revolve around those departments, or will share specific projects with individuals so that they can work on a variety of tasks related to that project. In the example above, I have a project called “For My Assistant,” which is where every task I assign my assistant goes. There are certain projects she doesn’t need to see (or want to see, really), so by creating a project exclusively for her and using a label associated with her, I can decide across all projects I have which tasks might be good for her to work on, and then I simply move them to her exclusive project when I decide to assign them. I keep the label attached regardless because then I can search for the label and see everything I’ve assigned to her, along with everything I may assign to her down the road.

If you haven’t already, really look at how you’re using labels in Todoist and evaluate whether or not they are adding real value to your tasks and helping you build an achievement structure and workflow that will help you move things forward exceptionally well. The effective use of labels can stave off overwhelm, make your to-do list more manageable, and allow you to make measured progress on the things that matter most to you every day. Take the time to work on your labels, and your labels will make your time work much better.
