Oxfordshire 1362
When Lily Barden discovers her best friend Johanna’s hand in marriage is being awarded as the main prize at a tournament, she is determined to stop it. Disguised as a knight, she infiltrates the contest, preparing to fight for Jo’s hand. But her conduct ruffles feathers, and when a dangerous incident escalates out of Lily’s control, Jo must help her escape.
Finding safety with a local brewster, Lily and Jo soon settle into their new freedom, and amongst blackberry bushes and lakeside walks an unexpected relationship blossoms. But when Jo’s past catches up with her and Lily’s reckless behaviour threatens their newfound happiness, both women realise that love must always come at a cost.
Content warnings:
ATPS contains mention of past emotional and physical abuse, and some mild violence.
It also contains explicit on-page sex scenes.

I feel like the disability character test could use a caveat for the death NOT being related to their disability. Like, if a deaf knight dies defending a castle from a siege, that's just a character living in a story. Or if an immunocompromised witch dies because she fucked up a summoning, or a very old ADHD person dying of old age.
*Nod*
Agreed. But I tried to construct the template (a term I now prefer to "test")* in such a way that allows for character death without falling into "pity porn" (or other exploitative) tropes.
To (somewhat) Briefly Recap, for those who haven't seen the post you're referring (and which has gotten a bit TL;DR over the last 5 years):
The 1,001 Problems Template
There's a disabled character (can be a background character)
Who Wants Something for Themselves (as opposed to being a Motivation/Proof of Good Character™ for the Normate Hero -- as in the problem of "fridging" for female characters)
Besides Cure, Revenge, or Death (So they can die in the story, and still fit the template, but it wouldn't fit the template if their only motivation is a Death Wish)**
And takes active steps to try and get it (as opposed to the Normate Hero giving them a happy ending by getting it for them)
*A Template is a tool to help simplify the creation of complex things to fulfill a specific purpose. You can't "pass" or "fail" a template, the way you can pass or fail a test.
**And if/when they die, their allies should treat it as the tragedy it is, instead of the sentiment I've seen too often in fiction (and, sickeningly, in real life): "At least in Heaven/the Afterlife, they're free from Disability, now. So we can be happy for them.

i love when by the time the story starts The Incident is already well in the past, and yet you can feel The Incident in every word every character says and the past keeps welling into the the present like blood through the cracks of dry and broken skin

Look I'm not saying that stopping in the middle of a sentence on a WIP was a bad idea but what i am saying is that as soon as I get my hands on a time machine past me needs to be ready to square the fuck up

Is it possible to write a monster story that doesn't end up being about identity and learning to love even the darkest parts of yourself?

i love it when characters are unfair, actually. i love it when they’re uncouth and cranky and hypocritical, i love it when they have cognitive dissonances, i love it when they make good and bad choices for the wrong reasons. i love when they’re short to anger and hard to understand. i love it when they’ve destroyed themselves for nothing but can’t even see either part of it yet. i love it when they’re messy and selfish and bad at communicating. i love it when they get convinced of their own ego and stuck in a feedback loop regarding their own warped paranoia. i love it when characters actively make their lives unknowingly harder for themselves. i love it when characters don’t know they’re in a story. i love it when characters are like real people

Me writing a scene with two or more people of the same gender and trying not to get the readers confused, while also trying not to overuse the characters' names or epithets
