The lord had made his demands, and even as you watched him leave, you knew what would come next. You'd seen it all before, long before you'd come here. Long before you were cursed.
After the demands, would come the threats, and after the threats, would come the fire. You still remembered the glow and heat from the fire that had consumed your childhood home. It burned in your memory just as it had burned the only life you'd known at the time. Some Lords saw it as their right. If they couldn't have it, no one could.
You frowned to yourself, contemplating. You did not wish to put the town at risk, after all, they'd been good to you given your condition. A fire would pose a risk to all of them, and you'd worked hard for this home, for this land, you'd poured blood, sweat, and tears into it for years to make it what it is today. Your soul was here. Working like this kept the wolf peaceful.
Leaving wasn't an option. A moon was almost upon you, and it had been a long time since the wolf has been free at night. You had little doubt of what it's reaction would be.
Sighing, you pinched the bridge of your nose. Both staying or leaving could end in catastrophe, which is what you'd chosen the simple life for to avoid. You were angry too, there was little doubt about that, this lord demanding your home, your life, simply because he had status and wealth? No, that infuriated you beyond belief.
The thought flickered in the back of your mind for a moment, of what would happen if said lord should suddenly disappear, but you were quick to chase it away. A lord's disappearance would not look kindly on anyone that knew him, and would no doubt bring wrath down upon the whole town.
A little miserably, you looked at your home, at the life you had. Many things you'd done yourself, yours hand calloused from all the work, skin sunkissed from many days under the hot sun, and while it had made you strong, it also made you feel vulnerable to think that all this could suddenly be taken away.
Someone softly cleared their throat behind you, making you turn. It was the mayor's son, the one who liked you, but it was a thought you could never bring yourself to entertain, knowing just how dangerous it would be for him. Although he had never said anything, it seemed he understood that.
"Now is not really the best time I fear," You said, your eyes pinching a little in discomfort. "It seems I have a big problem on my hands without much of a solution."
He smiled, and you could see the affection in his gaze. "We know, Father was informed this morning of the lord's intent. A council has convened and I was sent to tell you the news not to worry."
You blinked, not understanding. "Oh? I did not realise the mayor had the power to supersede a lord in these matters?"
"He doesn't," he said with a casual shrug. "But we all know what being here means to you. We will do all that we can to ensure it stays yours, we just ask for your trust in return."
A laugh left you. "If I did not trust you, then I would not be here. You have all been far too good for someone of the likes of me."
"Then it's settled," he said with a nod. "You do not need to worry about anything. Attend to your home and work as you normally would. We shall handle everything."
"Why?" You asked before you could help it. "Why do this for me? Surely there is some considerable risks to yourselves?"
He thought for a moment and nodded slowly. "There is, but we've all come to care for you, in our own ways, and we protect our own, no matter the cost."
You'd heard similar words before, from the pack you'd once thought were your family, but you could see it in his eyes that he meant it. He was speaking the truth.
A little speechless, you nod in thanks and he gives a polite bow before walking away. You'd had many strange days in your life, and this was certainly becoming one of those.
Still, you decided not to dwell on it and finished your work for the day. You knew a few of the townsfolk would be around at dusk to start bordering up your home, as they would for the next few nights, so you had to ensure all necessary tasks were done.
As dusk gave away to night though, no townsfolk came.
You weren't worried, knowing that something had probably come up, it had happened before. There were still several nights before it would be truly necessary.
The next day was the much the same. You worked all morning, the lord came and threatened you once again at lunch, this time it was the town doctor who came and reassured you not to worry, all was in hand, then again, no townsfolk came.
You knew that they said to trust then, but worry was creeping into your mind. Normally when they missed a time of bordering, they would apologise the next day. This time, nothing.
So as the third day dawned, you grabbed some of your harvest and took it into town. As the moon was in two nights, you were going to miss your usual schedule after all, not that they ever seemed to mind, but if they were sorting this out for you, it was the least you could do in providing it early.
Many people greeted you as you rode, and you felt the warmth and comfort of friendliness and familiarity. You smiled in return, casting them a wave, and it helped put your worried mind to ease.
It wasn't till you got to the centre of town though, that you were taken by surprise. The church, the general store, and the sheriff's office had all but been bordered up bar the main doors. You froze, staring, as it finally dawned on you what the townsfolk were about to do.
The sheriff came out to greet you. "Hope we're not taking you too much by surprise. We've given that idiot lord ample warning, but he just refuses to listen."
You stared at the sheriff. "I am not one to be used, sir, especially not like this."
He nodded slowly. "Myself and the Mayor were going to come and explain it to you this evening. No use intended."
"You already have a plan though," you said, frowning at him. "That seems like use to me."
The sheriff shook his head. "We're merely being prepared for all eventualities. We'll come see you this evening and explain, I promise."
It didn't sit right with you, but you nodded and decided to wait.
The sheriff was good on his word, the mayor by his side as they knock on your door.
"We know how this must look, but I want to assure you that we have no intent of setting you on this lord." The mayor said, taking a sip of tea that you offered. "Tomorrow, the townsfolk will come and border your home as usual."
You frowned at this, looking between the two of them. "So what is your purpose of bordering the key buildings in town?"
The mayor gave a small smile. "Did you never wonder why we would allow a werewolf to stay on our doorstep?"
It had occurred to you on many occasions, but you never wanted to voice it for fear of earning their ire.
"You are not the only werewolf here," the mayor said gently, reading your expression. "We have known how to deal with your kind, or curse if you prefer, for many years. The only reason we have kept this from you for so long is we were not sure whether to trust you with it. We know it can be...a touchy subject."
You swallowed, unsure of how to feel. "Who?"
"My son," the mayor said. "He recognised you for what were are immediately, I am rather surprised you did not do the same."
Heart racing a little, you sat there very still, staring at the two of them.
The mayor cleared his throat, and only continues at an encouraging nod from the sheriff. "My first wife was out late one evening and the moon had risen early. We heard the howls and went running, but it was too late by the time we got there and fired our guns. The creature fled but my wife critical, and there was little the doctor could do."
He drew in a deep breath. "There was little he could do, but save my son. She had been eight months pregnant at the time, so his survival chances were high, but it was not...an easy decision. Once we were certain he would survive, it then became the next question of whether he’d been affected, which was answered for us unfortunately quickly.”
When the mayor fell silent, the sheriff took over. “Given the tragedy, we wanted to protect the boy, we built a way that he could be safe and secure whenever the time hit. Given all the circumstances, he has come through it all remarkably well.”
This was a lot to take in, but it was the more pressing matter at hand that you were currently worried about. “So...you are going to...what exactly? Unleash him on the lord?”
“He wants to do this,” the mayor said quietly. “And he is in decent control these days. I’m not sure of your own circumstances, but embracing...certain aspects of the wolf have allowed him less wild time when he turns. This is his choice, and we are agreeing with him. We all know what happens when these lords think they can take over, your home would just be the first.”
“As we’ve said, you let us handle it.” The sheriff said. “We’ve got this organised and within control, and we have no intention of using you or your wolf. The townsfolk will keep themselves locked away in the church and sheriff’s office for the night. In the morning, we’ll deal with the damages.”
“But the risks...”
“Are worth it,” the sheriff nodded, as if confirming it with himself. “Don’t think we haven’t thought this through.”
“Why would you not mention any of this to me?” You asked. “Why would he not mention it?”
The mayor smiled. “I’m sure you know that werewolves can be fickle creatures. At first, we did not know whether we could trust you, then, we simply did not wish to risk your reaction should you know another of your kind was around. It has been done simply as an act of protection, on all sides, but now it has become a necessity for you to know. He would’ve have come and told you himself if there weren’t so much preparation still to do.”
“And do not think we are entirely heartless,” the sheriff said. “We have warned the lord of what is out there during a full moon. If he is foolish enough not to prepare, then that is on him.”
You stared between them, floored at the truth before you, and uncertain of what the next step  may be.
The mayor cleared his throat and stood. “Well, we best be off. We will finish securing the town tonight, and in the morning the most able bodied will be here to handle the usual bordering up of your home. You get a good nights rest and let us take care of it all.”
They left, leaving you to your thoughts. You would not rest tonight, you never did this close to the moon, and as the night slowly ticked by, you came to your decision.
As dawn broke, you rode into town, many of the people seeming surprised to see you.
“I wish to help,” you said, your voice carrying in the near silence of the morning. “You have all done so much for me that it would be in poor taste of me not to offer something in return. Take today to rest and prepare. Do not border up my home.”
There were murmurs through the small crowd of people, and the sheriff, doctor, and mayor shared a few words.
The mayor nodded at you. “Thank you. My son is at the other edge of town if you wish to speak to him.”
You left without another word, feeling the tension in the air but choosing to ignore it.
He was waiting for you but does not look around as you approach. “I hope you can forgive me for not telling you.”
Following his gaze, you see the home the lord had made for himself, disgust twisting in your stomach. “No forgiveness necessary, I completely understand.”
He glances at you. “You need not help if you are not comfortable.”
You grimace slightly. “You say that as if this isn’t the first lord I’ve killed.”
Looking at you fully, you can read the surprise in his expression, causing you to sigh. “A lord tried to take my family home once, but my father was determined not to leave, after all we had been there for several generations. In response to the unwillingness, the lord trapped my family inside, and burnt it to the ground.”
For a moment, you swore you could feel the black smoke filling your lungs again, but you let out a slow breath. “A pack of werewolves just happened to be close by at the time. I’m still not sure what possessed them to do it, but they did not fear the flames as they broke in and got us out. The damage had been done however, and I was the only survivor. I was barely six at the time.”
His hand rested on your arm and you met his gaze. “You do not have to tell me this if you do not wish.”
You smiled sadly though. “I have been holding onto this for a long time now, it’s okay. They took me in as one of their own, turning me to protect me, and they raised me as one of their own. When I was sixteen, they pointed me towards that same lords home and let me loose, the same home that he’d built on top of where my family used to live. When I came to in the morning, when I realised what they’d done it and why, I knew they were no true family, no matter what they said. The bodies in that building weren’t even cold by the time they’d move in.”
Silence sat between the two of you for a moment.
“What happened to them?” He asked quietly.
“I don’t know,” you said honestly. “I stayed until I felt strong enough to be able to survive on my own. There were threats of course, plenty of words said that showed they only ever wanted to use me, but I got away, and never looked back.”
He nodded slowly, and looked back at the house. “Thank you for telling me, I know that can’t have been easy.”
“I wanted you to know,” you said, and stretched out your neck, the aches settling on early. “It seemed appropriate given the situation and what we’re about to let happen. I’m just glad it’s my choice this time.”
“It almost seems strange, doesn’t it?” he said quietly. “To be able to choose in a situation like this after so much was control was taken away from us to begin with?”
You gave a small laugh. “Perhaps, but this is necessary, because we’re not the real monsters here, are we?”
He met your gaze, and for once you were both on the same page and comfortable, no secrets needed to be kept anymore, and neither of you needed to protect the other.
“No, we are not,” he said. “The town will be locked up by this afternoon, everyone will be safe. Except that monster in there, of course.”
You nodded, and turned away. “Well meet here at dusk then. I suggest bracing yourself, because no matter how easy you think this will be, it never is, no matter what we think of them.”
You are a werewolf and everyone in the village knows. When its nearing the full moon they all help you baricade yourself in your home since you are the only wheat farmer in town. Everything was fine until some self righteous lord takes over and demands not only your land but your home as well.

Hi guys.
So, I’m doing this far earlier than I expected to, but there’s been a few recent things happening in my life that have basically forced my hand. To cut a long story short, I lost my Mum to cancer two weeks ago, and Mum was unfortunately the main income earner in the family. Dad and I now having to move on top of dealing with our grief, and with the cost of living not getting any easier, we need to try everything we can to get there.
Even just a share helps, but I’ll be slowly updating @picturesfromkitchenator so that it makes more logical sense, but this may not happen till I’m in a much better headspace.
I also just want to reassure you all that I have not quit writing, even though it’s been some time since I’ve posted anything regularly. Again, once I’m back in the right mindset, I’ll be back to writing and posting for you all.
Thanks everyone!

In The Shadow Of Wings
Summary: Saving an angel should’ve never been on Crowley’s mind, he should’ve never even thought of doing something like that. Yet, that was exactly what he did. It wasn’t even Castiel, which would’ve made more sense to him, no, it was an angel he’d found in trouble, and something about her had compelled him to help. Essiel had her own problems of course, eventually leading the two of them into a rather large problem, one that threatens both their lives especially when sharing a vessel. A decision lay before them, but can both of them come out of such a call, and if they do, how exactly will it change their lives?
