❝     𝐖𝐀𝐈𝐓…   𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑  ?     ❞       brows knit together in thought.    the remark stuck out to cassandra   —   it seemed another piece of the puzzle ,   gleaming in its importance.   she guessed some parents might take a tendency for over protection to the  extreme ,   but here…   here it slid right into the bigger picture ,   didn’t it  ?    a tower deep in the middle of the woods ,   striking  golden hair and emerald eyes that seemed all too familiar ,   trapped inside that tower with a longing for those lanterns.   the coincidences piled up ,   and cassandra found some of her doubts alleviated.    at some point ,   coincidences stopped being coincidences.

hesitantly,   cassandra pulled herself from her thoughts,   gaze met with the subtle smile which formed on the other’s face.   small ,   yet so very bright…   and for a brief moment it took her by surprise.    that brightness ,   making her blink twice.       ❝     that uh—    that sounds a little extreme ,     ❞       cass replied finally as she pulled herself back to the present ,   eyes trailing out to the forest around them.    she still needed to STAY ALERT ,   cassandra reminded herself.       ❝     i mean ,    yeah ,    the world is dangerous.    a lot of things are.    but if you never face it ,    you’ll never get anywhere.     ❞

eyes trailed back ,   and in spite of herself   —   in spite of her impatience   —   the trace of a smile twitched at her lips.       ❝     i dunno.    i don’t know your mom ,   but…    i do know that if this is what you need to do ,    then—    then you shouldn’t let that worry hold you back.     ❞       the same way she needed to bury her own  :    the too present thought of her dad’s panic   (  or worse ,    disappointment  )    when he inevitably found her gone.    this would pan out ,    cassandra told herself.    it had to.

“Maybe,” Rapunzel rubbed her feet together, uncomfortable with that line of thought. The grass tickled the edges of her ankles, soft and warm in the afternoon sun. Flowers bloomed on the edges of the field. The mossy rock against her back was hard, but sturdy behind her. All around she heard the sounds of the forest- a soft trickle of water from some stream nearby, the rustling of the leaves in the breeze, the chirping of the birds in the trees. It all seemed so peaceful, so welcoming but wild. Nothing at all like Mother had described. 

And beside her, Cassandra...this strange girl who’d broken into her tower. She was a mystery. One Rapunzel hadn’t quite figured out yet.

“I guess...I mean, I know she just wants to protect me, but she can’t expect me to stay in a tower forever, right?” Rapunzel gave an uncertain giggle, but a voice echoed in her ear- you are not leaving this tower! Ever! 

Cassandra was right. She had to do this. No going back!

“Okay. Let’s go! No more crying, I promise!”
