Time for my @deancaspinefest collab!! 😍 For this one, I got paired with the awesome @samanddean76 whose summary caught my eye in the claims gallery right away and gave me chills.

Their fic has everything: Dean being stuck in hell and caught in a horrible dream that has that classic, not quite right, looming feeling of dread where you're only dimly aware of not being awake; among many others, an encounter with Pizza Man Cas; BAMF!Cas saving Dean from hell and cradling his soul; Dean finally being allowed to CRY a lot of real tears ffs - and so much more. It provided so many prompts I've always wanted to draw anyway, so I did.

Crying Dean, my beloved. If you know me or even have worked with me before, you know that I'm both strong and horrible at my deadline game. (Many apologies go out to @samanddean76 for cutting it so close multiple times, thanks for being patient with me through this whole thing!! 😂) But I actually painted this Dean just a few hours ago and I'm so, so happy with him - I feel like I haven't captured his essence in ages, but now I'm finally close again... 🥺

Without further ado though, please give Well, I Never Been To Heaven a read!

Summary:

Dean Winchester is living a plain, ordinary, and boring life. Until one day a new student shows up in the little town of Spain, SD. It’s love at first sight, but then an unimaginable tragedy happens, and Dean is left alone in his misery. Or is he a student attending Oxford University on a full athletic scholarship who finds a familiar face in his coxswain? Or is he hiking in the desert and attempting to save a known stranger? Or is he a traveler who stops for the night at a cheap motel and finds the pizza man of his dreams? Or is he none of those things? Just an unwitting victim of fate and destiny? Castiel had led the assault on hell, in order to save the righteous man and prevent the first seal of the apocalypse from being broken, lest hell should be allowed to reign on earth. In the aftermath of his disastrous mission, he is being held captive by Alastair, and his image is being used in a final, determined attempt to break Dean. But the profound bond that Castiel feels towards the pure soul won’t allow him to go down without a fight, and he makes a desperate prayer to his very old friend to set in motion a chain of events that might save him and his beloved mortal, or possibly, doom them for all eternity.

You know what? I truly, totally lucked out with my @deancasreversebang collabs this year! Two fantastic partners and two very delightful stories <3

From an artistic POV, one was more of a "faces & expressions" practice for me, while this one was definitely an anatomy challenge. Or an excuse to draw some angel cake? ... xD Anyway, here's my initial "Hockey Players gone Figure Skating" prompt:

I was SO excited when the amazing tiamatv claimed my art!! We already worked together once before and her way of storytelling made me so very happy, giddy and emotional <3

Tia put a ton of research and heart into writing my prompt, and I ended up learning much more about hockey and figure skating than I anticipated when I said, "I have no clue about hockey OR figure skating so don't worry about it, I'd just love an emotional journey!" - Tia managed to do it all, and with an insane word count for the short time she had on top. So the least I could do was provide one more "anatomy practice" :D

I'm actually a bit salty that this month has been so busy that I couldn't draw one more art piece - the story certainly would've deserved it. Well, maybe it'll call me back later :)

For my first of two super fun DCRB24 collabs, I got paired with the amazing sunkenfox <3

When I put in this art prompt that would inevitably lead to both Destiel and JenMish content, I was a bit worried that no one would want to write it - especially because my Reverse Bang ideas are usually very specific. Sunkenfox took on the challenge and exceeded all my expectations though! Whenever I had suggestions or asked for little tweaks, they didn't hesitate to work them in somehow and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. It has (non-explicit but very in love) Cockles, Queen Danneel on board, our boys finally finding their way to each other, and maybe a few fandom shenanigans too ;)

While the promotional posting for this year's Pinefest has been in full swing, I was reminded that I missed doing an art post for @friendofcarlotta's and my collab last year because I really needed the social media break at the time. BUT better late than never, eh?! 😄

Time Travel is one of my favorite tropes and Tina really hit home with that one. I vividly remember reading the draft for the first time and crying my damn face off while soaking in the bathtub. Good memories xD It's really such an emotional ride that I recommend everyone should (re)read if you're in the mood for a lot of pining and a bit of angst. Is there a better way to prepare for this year's Pinefest posting round? I doubt it! :D

The demonic beast that seemed to be reveling in the pain and misery that he wrought on others smiled cruelly, as his thin, greasy fingers threaded through the short, dark wavy hair and clenched tight before they pulled the bowed head up. “Do you see?” The nasally whisper sounded in Castiel’s ear, as he tried to turn his head away, “Do you see how he suffers?”

Castiel did indeed see, truly he did. There was simply no way that he couldn’t. Chained in the heavily warded stockade as he was, looking on as Dean thrashed and whimpered, as he sobbed and cried out for the angel that he couldn’t even possibly know yet. As he pleaded for Castiel to be returned to him, begged that he might be taken in Castiel’s place.

It was all that Castiel could do not to snarl at the godless monster that held them, knowing that it would change nothing, except to possibly make the torture that Dean was suffering to be made even more heinous than it had already proven to be. Alastair was an old demon, one that had been around since the initial waves of demons had been created by Lucifer all those eons ago. His cruelty knew no bounds, and he was determined to destroy the righteous man. To draw him into his web of ceaseless brutality so that the first seal might be broken, so that the demons might be able to take the first steps towards the apocalypse so that they could raise their Lord and Savior from his prison deep within the bowels of hell.

But Dean Winchester had held firm, refusing to surrender to his baser urges and desires. Alastair had been torturing him for almost forty years already, and still, he had remained stalwart in his refusal to torment another helpless soul. Castiel’s garrison had been captured, and he was the lone survivor. Now held prisoner, his vessel’s image being used to cause untold distress in the almost broken mind of the one righteous man in all the cosmos that could bring about its utter destruction.

Castiel knew that he needed to act, and he needed to do so swiftly. Not only to save the mission from certain failure, but to save the pure soul that was being ravaged right in front of him.

“I know, I could always bring you back, and then let him see you die again. Hmmm. I like the sound of that.” Castiel could only glare at the demon, knowing that he was presently helpless. So, it was with a singular purpose that he issued his desperate prayer, knowing that he had been clearly forsaken by heaven. Choosing to seek assistance from the one who would hopefully be able to rescue them. If he were still alive. But more importantly, if he could be convinced that he was still needed. That the world he had forsaken heaven for was worth his further efforts.

And if he could be convinced that he needed to set aside his unhealthy proclivities long enough to see to the continued existence of all the many glorious works that their father had wrought.

“Gabriel, please. *I beseech you.*”

2023 in Review (Or, Holy Crap, I Wrote a Lot of Stuff Again This Year)

Fortunate Son | Rated: E | Word Count: ~150,000 (still posting)

Summary: The year is 1966, the place is Kansas, and Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak are falling in love. But with Castiel under the thumb of his conservative parents and Dean set to ship out to Vietnam, there is no possible future for them.

As Castiel’s life turns upside down and the hell of Vietnam threatens to swallow Dean’s soul, it will take everything they have to find their way back to each other. But some things are worth waiting — and fighting — for.

This is the longest thing I've ever written by myself, and I'm so damn proud of it. I worked hard to do justice to the Vietnam War setting and I grew so attached to every single character in this fic. Also, I'm still in awe of the beautiful banner, courtesy of @basketcasebetty.

The Man in the Rock | Rated: E | Word Count: 7,331

Summary: Five years ago, Dean lost his boyfriend Cas. In an effort to keep his memory alive, he made a statue of Cas that still stands in his backyard, but enough time has passed that Dean thinks it might be time to let the statue go.

The night before the statue is set to be removed, Dean makes one final, desperate wish for Cas’ return, though he knows it’s impossible for that wish to come true.

I started making this list in reverse order, and now I'm stuck with it XD. So this is actually the last of four (!!) collaborations I was lucky enough to do with @xfancyfranart this year! She's such a pleasure to work with and we always have an amazing time together. For this one, she drew not just Dean and Cas, but also Meg and Ava Wilson, and they're all just so hot. The mods of @deancas-stabfest said, "Let's do Dean/Cas and femslash this year," so of course I took that as a personal challenge to put both in the same fic.

First | Rated: E | Word Count: 25,968

Summary: Romance novelist Castiel Novak is recovering from an addiction to painkillers and he’s struggling to settle back into life post-rehab. His therapist suggests visiting a local farm where anyone can spend an hour or two in the calming company of rabbits. The farm’s owner, Dean, is himself a recovering alcoholic… and a huge fan of Castiel’s books.

A story of recovery, romance and rabbits, told in a series of firsts.

So, you know how there's that scene where Dean picks up a rabbit in "Regarding Dean" and is all tender and sweet with it? And that other scene in "Malleus Maleficarum" where Dean is all upset because a witch killed a rabbit? Those two scenes are the reason this fic exists. With gorgeous art by Eliza_Avalo!

You Better Not Stay | Rated: E | Word Count: 17,799

Summary: Recent high school graduates Dean Winchester and Castiel Novak have been friends since childhood, and dating in secret for a little over a year. But their relationship has an expiration date: Cas is leaving town, and Dean… well, Dean isn’t. Not with his dad breathing down his neck and a family business to run.

For their final date, Dean takes Cas to the old skating rink where they used to spend time as kids. What Dean doesn’t know is that when the rink closed down, something else took up residence there. And it won’t let them go without a fight.

I always really liked the idea of writing a fic about Dean and Cas being the dumb, risk-taking couple from an SPN cold open. @deancashorrorfest gave me a chance of making that dream come true. XD I thought long and hard about giving these two an unhappy or even ambiguous ending, but I just ended up being way too fond of them. With wonderful art by @demeters-sketchbook!

Warm | Rated: T | Word Count: 1,427

Summary: It's the zombie apocalypse, and Dean saw Cas die at the hands of the undead years ago. So imagine his surprise when Cas returns to him with a story of hope and recovery.

This was originally a gift fic, and it's very vaguely inspired by the movie Warm Bodies. Some day, I'm going to write that epic post-apocalypse zombie fic I have in my WIP folder. Some day, mark my words!!

The Last Night | Rated: E | Word Count: 14,110

Summary: As a Third Class bedroom steward aboard the Titanic, Dean does some of the dirtiest, worst-paid work on the entire ship. His prospects for the trip improve when he meets F Deck passenger Castiel Novak, a mysterious artist whose spellbinding eyes seem to follow Dean wherever he goes.

On the night of April 14, they finally give in to the call of their mutual attraction. But fate has plans for the Titanic that night — and for the rest of Dean and Castiel’s lives.

This story proved conclusively that I'm completely incapable of writing plotless smut. I really did try with this one, but instead it came out as an angsty story about the Titanic? I got to collaborate with @xfancyfranart again for this one, and she drew some lovely, naked boys. I'm still giggling at the "censor-ships" in her art post.

The Single Dad's Guide to Dating a Spy | Rated: E | Word Count: 29,534

Summary: Single father Castiel Novak feels stuck in his dead-end job and the mindless routine of parenting. Everything changes when an early-morning grocery run throws him into the path of Dean Winchester, a government agent whose mission is tangled up with — of all things — Castiel’s dating history.

I had this idea that someone who's used to parenting a very young child would actually be an amazing spy because they're used to being super sneaky and quiet, and they've withstood SO much torture. Hence, this story. @demeters-sketchbook captured the vibes so perfectly with his art - please take a close look at it to catch all the in-jokes.

Breaking News | Rated: T | Word Count: 3,200

Summary: Dean and Castiel are co-anchors on a local morning news show. Castiel is secretly in love with Dean. Nothing could possibly go wrong.

(aka the fic that is basically the Destiel breaking news meme personified)

Just like literally everyone else this past summer, I saw this tumblr post and thought, "Where is this fic?? I need it!" So I wrote it.

Devotion | Rated: E | Word Count: 29,237

Summary: In a future where Earth has been devastated by angels, the seraph Castiel has rebelled and joined the human resistance led by Dean Winchester. Humanity is on the verge of victory when Dean’s brother Sam learns of the angels’ final, desperate plan: they will send an assassin twenty years into the past — to kill Dean before he can become a threat.

Low on grace, Castiel nevertheless volunteers to travel back in time to save Dean’s life. As he gets to know this younger Dean, his carefully constructed walls come tumbling down, unleashing a love that Castiel has kept a secret for years.

But with an assassin on Dean’s trail, will Dean and Castiel’s future be cut short before it can properly begin?

So my friend @wanderingcas put this throwaway Terminator reference in one of her fics, and my brain latched onto it like a giant, plot-bunny-fueled leech. Because Terminator is the perfect movie for a Destiel AU!! @xiejie-liubo agreed and made gorgeous art for this.

Don't Sweat It | Rated: T | Word Count: 2,673

Summary: In this "deleted scene" from "The Song Remains the Same" (5x13), we find out exactly why (and how the hell) Dean and Cas ended up in the honeymoon suite of that motel in 1970s Lawrence.

This was originally for a Discord server zine that unfortunately never quite came together. The theme was "The Winchester Gospels," and I had fun playing with the idea of Chuck's revisions for this episode.

Here We May Be Free | Rated: E | Word Count: 39,506

Summary: When Dean was eleven, he saw something in the ocean: a boy with blue eyes and iridescent scales.

Almost twenty years later, a spontaneous detour after a hunt brings Dean and Sam back to the town where that encounter took place. And Dean can’t shake the feeling that Castiel, the owner of the local Mermaid Museum, looks familiar…

Mer!Cas with his museum and his mer-morabilia and his novelty shirts might be one of my favorite Cas's I've ever written. And of course, pairing him with Stanford!Dean (my beloved) was absolutely delicious. @hawkland did some incredibly stunning art for this, including a mer!peen that will forever delight me. It deserves to be in a real-life mermaid museum.

Losing Time | Rated: M | Word Count: 7,423

Summary: Harvey Dent is struggling with memory gaps. There are places he can’t remember going, and calls he can’t remember making.

One night, a man calling himself Dean Winchester pays him a visit. Dean claims to have an explanation for Harvey’s missing memories — a strange tale of angelic possession, alternate universes and life after death.

Worse, Dean’s face is as familiar to Harvey as his own. It’s the face of a friend he believed was dead and gone: Bruce Wayne.

I'm still heartbroken over both Gotham Knights and The Winchesters being canceled after a single season. They deserved so much better. I tried my best to do them both justice (as well as connect them with the main SPN 'verse) in this crossover that pushes the Harvey/Bruce agenda I never even knew I had.

The Trouble With Blue Eyes | Rated: E | Word Count: 14,902

Summary: For years now, Dean Winchester has had a mutually beneficial arrangement with Castiel Novak, a fellow private eye. It’s good, it’s easy, and there’s nothing wrong with it.

Well, except for one thing: Dean’s caught himself a bad case of feelings, and Cas doesn’t feel the same way.

Collaborating with aggiedoll is the absolute best. She's not just a stunning artist, but also an extraordinarily productive one. This noir-style fic was originally inspired by one of her art pieces, but she made so much additional art for it that it was almost a graphic novel by the end. PLEASE give her all the love. She deserves it so much.

I absolutely despised this fic when I was writing it because it just would not stop throwing plot wrinkles my way. But in the end, I think the struggle was worth it. These two made me cry repeatedly while I was writing them, and they weren't all tears of frustration. Plus, I got to work with @xfancyfranart again!! (which is always its own reward)

California Vampire Summer | Rated: E | Word Count: 78,327

Summary: It’s the summer before Sam’s freshman year at Stanford, and Dean is tired of his dead-end life in Lawrence. His solution? Move to California to be closer to Sam.

At first glance, it’s the perfect plan: beaches, sunshine and a free place to stay, courtesy of old family friend Bobby Singer. It gets even better when Dean meets Cas, the hot tattooed guy who works at a video store on the local boardwalk.

This is it!! The OG @xfancyfranart collab!! I'm so fond of this story because it was the one that introduced us and marked the start of our friendship. Plus, it's a story about 1980s California and queer vampires and the agony of being young and in love. What's not to like?

So what's next?
