when you think about the fact that besides her dad (who died when she was still a child) jo hasn’t had any prominent male “influences” in her life, it makes sense that she’d latch onto dean, an unexpected and recurring male figure in her life (who didn’t hesitate to approach her). and if the men jo has (actively) encountered have been ash and then men who have “[thought] they could get into [her] pants” it’s not surprising at all that she’d interpret her affection towards dean as something romantic/non-platonic, especially since during dean’s first interaction(s) with her he was not-so-subtly checking her out – which, in turn, brings up the question of the lack of prominent female figures (with no romantic/sexual association) in dean’s life. that being said dean and jo are very “the feeling was friendship, but neither had ever experienced it” to me. am i onto something here or just reaching

just curious: how do you read into the dean & jo dynamic? because i know the show intended to have some romantic (not so) undertones there but to me they've always had kind of older brother & younger sister vibes? thoughts 🎤

i wonder if part of the reason why ivy is so drawn to jason is because jason isn't drawn to her. as we know, ivy's always forced herself to hide under a mask and be someone who's popular and pretty and promiscuous (portrait of a girl). there's expectations others have of her and, consequently, she has set for herself, expectations that she constantly feels the need to meet. she knows what boys want from her and she's willing to give it to them even though all she gets from that is temporary fun and not genuine relationships (touch my soul). take matt, who thinks he loves ivy, but has actually fallen for the portrait of ivy he sees and she presents. but jason, even with his reputation as the successful popular guy, doesn't moon after her or try to sleep with her, the popular girl, every chance he gets. though obviously not the real reason, perhaps ivy interprets his initial hesitation or the slow "warming up" as him not seeing just the portrait of her but acknowledging her as more than her body and reputation, and not as the actual disinterest it is. in touch my soul, she sings "the phone won't ring, and i become some anecdote"; unlike the boys she's slept with before have supposedly done, jason doesn't ignore her when she goes to talk to him and he says that he should've called her over spring break when she mentions it. that may be something ivy hasn't really had before, and adding that to the way jason doesn't just ask for sex and then up and leave, it's possible that jason is the closest she's had to a genuine romantic (to her) relationship. we don't really know anything about their relationship beyond or before the musical, but they have been in the same school for roughly four years, so it's safe to assume that they've had some kind of relationship prior to their romantic (again, to ivy) one. depending on how long ivy's been crushing on jason ("i've wanted to kiss you for so long" in one kiss), it's possible that part of the reason she likes him so much is because he's treated her like a person and/or a friend, not just some piece of meat or the façade she puts up for others. jason is different from the other boys ivy's been involved with ("there's something about you, jason" in one) and she wants to know him better and more intimately ("i can't put my finger on the why, but i'd like to try") while post-act one, jason tries to let her down gently because he's not even remotely interested in that kind of serious relationship with her. and to ivy, this rejection comes completely out of the blue, because in fear of who he really is jason's continued to lead her on ("it's okay, it was cute" in one, after she apologizes for throwing herself at him) by going along with her and trying to fabricate some of the desire she feels for him, even going as far as sleeping with her to suppress the part of him he can't bring himself to accept, to do something that plays to his understanding of right and ideal. i wonder if ivy interprets jason's polite respect (partly born from his disinterest) as him being genuinely intrigued by her and interested in knowing who lies underneath the brushstrokes.

don't mind me just thinking about how silco absolutely falls apart when he finds jinx on the bridge, hurt and unconscious and severely injured and he takes her in his arms and sees vi. thinking about how his eyes seem to tell vi that she's my daughter. stay away. and then he carries her all the way to the undercity to singed, the only person he knows could save her life. thinking about how he's absolutely panicked, and when he hears jinx, conscious again for one split second, he immediately calls her name and rushes to the table she's laying down on. thinking about how he gently cradles her face and kisses her forehead. thinking about how he has to be drugged unconscious because he can't watch jinx in pain. thinking about how when he wakes up again and doesn't see jinx, about him tracing the scraping marks on the table and even in his half-drugged state his first reaction is to threaten singed with a knife because where is his daughter. thinking about them™.
