If you think your music isn’t good enough, there’s a very high likelihood you’re measuring your progress incorrectly. Most young artists compare their music to the industry leaders who made history with their music.
Never compare yourself by parameters that don’t apply to you. The progress of other composers doesn’t apply to your own personal growth.
The real questions you must ask yourself are these:
Have I made progress since my last composition?
Am I writing better than I was a few months ago?
What strengths does this piece have that my others didn’t?
In what ways can I improve for my next piece?
The only way you should ever measure the quality of your work is based on your own compositional improvement.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. It’s that important. You will rob yourself of ambition, courage, and joy if you are comparing your compositions to the work of Tchaikovsky. You will build confidence in your music if you measure your progress.
Quick reminder, especially for you younger undergrads: Discipline is a skill, not a character trait. And just like any skill, it can be practiced and improved upon incrementally. Try not to get discouraged if you have a day, or multiple days, where you are less disciplined than you would like or need to be. Don’t quit. Don’t spend the next week binging Netflix because you think it’s a hopeless endeavour. Just get up the next day and try again. Each day you try is more practice, and each day you practice, you’ll get a little bit better, and that continual improvement will pay dividends in the long run.
I can’t believe this needs to be said, but the rich are not doing you a service by employing you. They require you. Everything they have is contingent on the fact that you work for them and do what they say. Without you, the rich have literally nothing. Workers have power over the entire economy.
It is actually workers doing a major service to their employers by not unionizing and not starting a revolution, since literally the only thing workers need to do to grind the entire economy to a halt is put their hands behind their back and stop working. That is it. Workers could crash the entire machine in one moment if they wanted.
Stop calling them “job creators.” They aren’t. They literally require you. But you dont require them. You are wealth creators. And you have the power to take it back whenever you want. You just have to organize.

honestly i think the existence of beauty apps and snapchat filters that completely alter the shape of one’s face is probably doing a fuckton of damage to everyone’s attitudes towards ourselves & perception of beauty
