The story behind the world's first cashpoint
The world’s first cash machine landed on a north London high street 50 years ago this week, transforming everyday banking for millions of people all over the globe. On June 27 1967 the cash machine, installed outside a Barclays branch in Enfield, north London, was unveiled. Customers who needed to withdraw money no longer had to rely on bank cashiers, who would close the doors at 3.30pm. Banks’ restricted opening hours at the time were what inspired John Shepherd-Barron, a British inventor and businessman who worked for De La Rue, the banknote printer, to design a machine that dispensed cash. Mr Shepherd-Barron came up with the idea of the “automated teller machine” in 1965 after he arrived at his bank “one minute too late” to withdraw money.
It struck me that there must be a way I could get my own money, anywhere in the world or the UK. I hit on the idea of a chocolate-bar dispenser, but replacing chocolate with cash.
John Shepherd-Barron, inventor of the cash machine.
Two years later the first ATM was installed outside the Barclays branch in Enfield. It was the first of six machines he was commissioned to design. While the original ATM did offer convenience, customers could not ignore banking hours altogether. Debit cards had yet to be invented, and customers had to get special vouchers from the bank, which were processed in the same way as cheques and debited to the customer’s account. Now there are around 70,000 cashpoints in Britain. Many not only let customers take money out, but also allow them to deposit funds in their accounts, pay bills, top up mobile phones or transfer money to other people.

Over 100 people feared buried by southwest China landslide
Around 100 people are feared buried after a landslide smashed through their village in southwest China's Sichuan Province early Saturday, local officials said, as they launched an emergency rescue operation. Some 40 homes in the village of Xinmo were swallowed by the cascading debris after the side of a mountain collapsed, blocking a two kilometre (one mile) stretch of river, according to a statement from the Maoxian government news office. An emergency response "to the first class catastrophic geological disaster" is under way, the statement said, adding that the full extent of the landslide was at yet unclear.
There are several tonnes of rock. It's a seismic area here. There's not a lot of vegetation.
Local police captain Chen Tiebo
Search and rescue efforts were underway involving more than 400 workers, including police. CCTV showed footage of rescuers using a couple of earth movers but also relying on ropes to pull at huge rocks. Mao County, or Maoxian, is home to about 110,000 people, according to the government's website. Most residents are of the Qiang ethnic minority. The village is known locally for tourism and Chinese reports said it was unclear if tourists were among the people buried by the landslide. A report from the state news agency Xinhua said that "part of a mountain" in the Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba had collapsed.

Ron Howard steps in to complete the Young Han Solo film
After the shock announcement that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller had been let go from the upcoming Han Solo movie, Ron Howard has been officially appointed as their replacement. Variety confirms that Howard will begin work immediately on the spinoff, which still has a few weeks of principal photography left and five additional weeks of reshoots planned for late summer. But that schedule could be extended, since Howard now needs to review the script and filmed footage to determine whether rewrites and additional reshoots are necessary.
I've been a fan forever. It's gratifying to lend my voice to the Star Wars universe now.
Ron Howard
The former ‘Han Solo’ directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, were let go just two days ago, with only three weeks left of principal photography. They had already completed four and a half months of filming. But it looks as though ‘creative differences’ between themselves and Lawrence Kasdan, as well as Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy, saw the pair removed from the production. The appointment of Howard, who will also oversee the post-production process, will make the movie's credits very complicated. Lord and Miller may end up not receiving a credit for their work on the film-despite having been attached for two years and filming since February-because the Directors Guild of America frowns upon multiple directors being credited for the same film.
We’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.

Police issue child safety warning over Snapchat maps update
Police forces have raised child safety concerns about a new Snapchat feature that reveals users' locations amid fears it could be used for stalking. Parents have been warned to turn off "Snap Maps" on their children's phones after Snapchat, which is wildly popular among teenagers, introduced the location-sharing mode this week. The feature displays a map of nearby friends, showing their latest location gathered using a smartphone's GPS sensor. Users of the app can also search for locations such as individual schools, with the app displaying public photos and videos sent by students.
It’s worrying that Snapchat is allowing under 18s to broadcast their location on the app where it can potentially be accessed by everyone in their contact lists.
A spokesperson for the National Society for the Protection of Children
While the feature is designed to help friends meet up or attend events together it has raised fears that it could be abused. Preston Police said on its Facebook page: "Obviously this may cause concern for certain users, particularly those who have young children who use the app." It said users could change the settings to a private mode that does not share their location with anyone. Parents can turn the feature off on children's phones by setting the app to "ghost mode". Snapchat said the new Snap Maps is off by default and users must choose to opt in. It said the app is set to share with friends by default, while users can choose who can view their story and posts. It said the feature was not designed to broadcast to strangers.

New York 'gangster' released from prison at age 100
John "Sonny" Franzese, a reputed underboss of the Colombo crime family, was released from a Massachusetts prison hospital on Friday at age 100, ending his tenure as the oldest inmate in a U.S. federal prison, his son and media reports said. Franzese has been in and out of prison for much of his adult life, having been granted parole by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons at least six times, Newsday reported. He was most recently incarcerated, at the age of 93 in 2010, for a racketeering conspiracy involving the shakedown of New York strip clubs. Franzese was acquitted in several murder cases going back for decades, but he was sentenced to 50 years in prison in 1967 for his involvement in a bank robbery conspiracy. (He was released long before he completed the full term in that case.)
Dismember victim in kiddie pool. Cook body parts in microwave. Stuff parts in garbage disposal. Be patient.
CBS reported Franzese as saying
When the half-century sentence was announced, Franzese's estranged wife Cristina told the New York Daily News, "I'd be shocked if he doesn't live to 100. That man can do jail time standing on his head." One of Franzese's eight sons, Michael, confirmed his release from the Federal Medical Center at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.

At least 58 killed as forest fires rage across Portugal
At least 58 people have been killed in a number of forest fires in central Portugal, as temperatures pass 40C. The Portuguese government said many of the victims died in their cars as flames swept over a road. Officials say a lightning strike is believed to have sparked the blaze. Interior Ministry official Jorge Gomes said 16 people lost their lives in their vehicles between the towns of Figueiro dos Vinhos and Castanheira de Pera. The EU has activated its civil protection efforts to help fight the blazes. About 59 people have been hurt, 14 of them seriously.
The smoke cloud is very low, which does not allow helicopters and fire planes to work efficiently, but we're doing everything possible and impossible to put out this fire.
Interior Ministry official Jorge Gomes
Around 600 firefighters are battling the flames raging in the Pedrogao Grande area, which is about 93 miles northeast of the capital Lisbon. Six firefighters are among those injured. A period of national mourning will be announced shortly, Mr Costa said. Spain has sent two water-bombing planes to help their neighbour fight the fires. Some 60 forest fires broke out overnight on Saturday, as temperatures passed 40C in several regions. A number of villages have been evacuated due to the danger but the extent of damage to property is not yet clear.
Unfortunately this seems to be the greatest tragedy we have seen in recent years in terms of forest fires. The priority now is to save those people who could still be in danger.
Prime Minister Antonio Costa
