THESIS: the real reason that people stay on this hellsite is not “chronological order” or “the drama” or whatever (per se), but is instead linked to how tumblr, unlike most social media, is not optimised to give content as short of a half-life as possible, but instead is optimised to let content continue to cycle for months, years, even decades. this has in turn led to a more consistent centralised site “culture” in which there is more coherent linkage among different areas of the site, thus also explaining why its content permeates so thoroughly throughout the internet.

Okay, so, today Hozier woke up and chose violence.

Just when it has seemed I couldn’t bear one more friend waking with a tumor, one more maniac

with a perfect reason, often a sweetness has come and changed nothing in the world

except the way I stumbled through it, for a while lost in the ignorance of loving

someone or something, the world shrunk to mouth-size, hand-size, and never seeming small.

I acknowledge there is no sweetness that doesn’t leave a stain, no sweetness that’s ever sufficiently sweet ....

Tonight a friend called to say his lover was killed in a car he was driving. His voice was low

and guttural, he repeated what he needed to repeat, and I repeated the one or two words we have for such grief

until we were speaking only in tones. Often a sweetness comes as if on loan, stays just long enough

to make sense of what it means to be alive, then returns to its dark source. As for me, I don’t care

where it’s been, or what bitter road it’s traveled to come so far, to taste so good.

I feel like Watcher 2.0 isn't for us. It's for SOMEONE, for some other audience or person, but not us.

#this is the kind of shit i'd love to see research papers done on #imo what i think fucks current fandom up more than anything else #is people feeling like they have to participate in a certain specific way or they're getting a bad grade in being a fan #they have to like like like or share share share #feed the algorithm so their show stays relevant or on their friend's pages #(no doubt encouraged by studios throwing out season 1 and if it doesn't get the 'right' amount of views #within the 'right' amount of time they toss it #which is to be clear Bullshit) #but i feel like some people get discouraged or give up because they don't feel like they can keep up with the system fandom has warped into #or they get super dejected because they contribute something to the fandom and it doesn't get the response they've learned to expect #like we all owe everyone else who likes the same things we do a reaction or acknowledgement consistently #and/or we need to be creating things in it for others to consume consistently #perhaps in a perfect world you could do that always but we have lives outside of fandom and different energy levels and moods and tastes #idk i'm from the land of old school forums and fanfiction.net #where i could spend hours guilt free devouring people's art and theories and conversations #and if i didn't have anything to add i didn't and no one gave a shit #i don't know what the fix is there exactly but i do know i still tend to gravitate to the fandom spaces i manage to find here and there #that still feel chill #like a group of rag-tag friends and not a cubicle of networking coworkers #everyone's just vibing in their own unique ways whatever that means to them #and sometimes there's lively conversation #and sometimes it's calm and silent #and maybe that means Our Beloved Series isn't always relevant or trending or whatever #but we're enjoying the view floating the fandom lazy river wherever it's headed next #and we could not stop obsessively loving whatever it is we're obsessively loving even if we tried #so who cares? #fandom
