The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, Wyoming 296, links the town of Cody with the Beartooth Highway and the Northeast Gate of Yellowstone National Park. The route crosses the Shoshone National Forest through the Absaroka Mountains to the Clarks Fork Valley.

Awwwww-ters!

One of nature’s most social and playful creatures, river otters have big personalities and even bigger appetites. Otters most often eat fish, frogs and crawfish, but will also consume worms, insects, mice, bird eggs, nestlings, crabs, and more.  

Often seen in groups, or romps, they can be observed hunting and frolicking year-round at Grand Teton National Park. Most of the year, they are active at night, dawn or dusk but they become more diurnal during the winter. Observing them is a rare treat.

Stories shared by Tribal communities, especially those of the Great Plains and Black Hills region, indicate that the Tower was and still is a sacred site.  

Many Tribes still utilize the park for traditional ceremonies. Visitors will observe prayer cloths and prayer bundles attached to trees around the park, especially along the Tower Trail. These represent a tangible connection which Native people still maintain with this area. Please do not touch, disturb, or photograph these cloths.

Connections to this place are as important today as they were for generations before it became Devil’s Tower National Monument.
