You know I was wondering the same. I've seen speculation that it might be him literally putting a line in the sand. Refusing to accept the order of things. That it was him making a cross? I really don't know. His love is about to kill herself so it could be all sorts of things. I wonder if they explained this in the post episode podcast.

They're being cowards. They won't stand up to Ishido. Look at what happened to the regent who did. I think Mariko made it very clear with the execution of crimson sky that Ishido is not looking to protect the heir. He's in it for power and control. And yes, though they are told they can leave as they please, can they really?

Mariko's life was so tragic, she deserved more periods of happiness with John :( He could have been her escape for a little while...

But there were so many more happy moments between them, they just chose not to give them to us. 😭 Anna even said as much in a recent interview that she wished we could've had more happier times between them. We were just getting a taste of it before it was taken away. So cruel. 🥺

I mean do we even need to do anything? She's done all the heavy lifting. Her work has been beyond incredible and the film industry would be blind and dumb not to see it. It's still very early in the year, but I would be shocked if she doesn't snag a nomination.
