I’m an american who knows very little of my family history. My father was adopted but my maternal grandfathers surname was Scott. I’ve been on ancestry.com trying to find out more. At least my DNA says I’m Scottish, if my nationality doesnt. I know you and this blog don’t speak for every Scot, but does it bother you when someone like me tries to claim that I’m Scottish?
Heya. So first of all it definitely doesn't bother me at all. As you say I can't speak for everyone but I think some people would agree with me. Finding out about your family history is really interesting and difficult a lot of the time but finding out that your family comes from elsewhere there's nothing wrong with adding that to your identity in a way and wanting to explore it further. We have to remember that a lot of Scottish people did move to America.
I think there are definitely people who object to people claiming to be Scottish through dna and prefer that people use the phrase that they have Scottish ancestry if that makes sense? But everyone has their own interpretations.
