Fake-tanuki soup or Fake tanuki-soup?

連濁（れんだく; en: rendaku）is a phonological rule in japanese that makes the first voiceless consonant of a word change into a voiced consonant when used in a compound word. For example, おり ＋ かみ → おりがみ (ori + kami → origami) ("fold" + "paper" → "paperfolding") - the /k/ sound in かみ becomes a /g/ sound (which is the voiced version of a /k/ sound) by adding a voicing mark -> が.

What’s interesting about 連濁 is that native speakers can use it subconsciously as a sort of “order of operations” system for unfamiliar words, like PEMDAS or BIDMAS in maths. A classic example of this is the にせたぬきじる problem[1]. Native speakers can immediately and with confidence tell the difference in meaning between two compound words they have never heard before, despite the only difference being the voicing of a single consonant. Take the three words 偽 (にせ, meaning “fake” or “imitation”), たぬき (tanuki, the Japanese racoon dog), and 汁 (しる, meaning “soup” or “broth”). They can be combined into the following compound words: にせたぬきじる and にせだぬきじる (note the voicing mark, or dakuten, on the latter). Keep in mind, these two words do not exist in ordinary japanese - they’ve been created as part of a linguistics experiment.

You might think the meaning would be ambiguous in those compound words: is it (imitation tanuki)+soup or imitation+(tanuki soup)? Let’s imagine we’re referring to the former. First, we combine にせ＋たぬき. There’s a rule that rendaku can’t occur if there’s already a voicing mark in the second component of the compound, but we’re safe here - たぬき has no voicing mark. Therefore, it becomes にせだぬき. Then, we combine にせだぬき＋しる. Again, しる has no voicing mark in it, so we’re safe to add it in, and we get にせだぬきじる.

Conversely, let’s say we were referring to fake “tanuki-soup”. First we combine たぬき＋しる. This combines safely to たぬきじる. Then we combine にせ＋たぬきじる. But wait, the second component does already have a voicing mark, on じ! So we can’t add one to た. Therefore we end up with にせたぬきじる.

That’s a lot of thinking and linguistic hoops to jump through to make up 2 words, but here’s the thing: Japanese native speakers who have never heard these words before can instinctively deduce the difference in meaning with startling accuracy. They correctly determine the meaning of にせだぬきじる as “a broth made from imitation tanuki” and にせたぬきじる as “a fake version of a dish called ‘tanuki soup’”. Even more surprising is the research findings of Shigeto Kawahara, which show that children as young as 9 years old can consistently deduce the difference as well[2]. I think this shows how incredibly powerful the subconscious mind is at learning linguistic rules, and how bad the conscious mind is at learning them!

Hello, I've been trying to make a name from the word Hammerspace but I haven't been able to make one I'm satisfied with, any advice on how to do it? (I've been using your guides but I feel like I'm doing something wrong)

Other than transliterating the name (ie. use the kanji for "hammer" and "space"), if you're just going for a concept, maybe try different names and related kanjis for said concept, or even a pop media reference. Some off the top of my head:

Pocket dimension

Infinite space

Extra storage

Magic satchel

Hyperspace/subspace

Bottomless pit

Infinite bag of holding (I think that's what they call it in D&D?)

Global storage (that one is a computer science reference, in case you weren't aware that Hammerspace is an actual concept there, so you could use it as a pun in that sense)

Reservoir (it's a bit of an adjacent concept, but since reservoirs are a water supply, you could say something like "[something] supply" using that word? I dunno, I'm reaching) --> actually on that note, maybe "human reservoir" is a good suggestion too given that your character is human (presumably, though if they aren't human that's cool too!)

Heart space/soul space (assuming that's where the hammerspace is kept?)

Tardis (yes, from Doctor Who--you know, "bigger on the inside" and all that)

Pokeballs (from Pokemon, basically a hammerspace where Pokemon are kept!)

There are probably a few others that a little more abstract, but you get the idea right? Maybe if you want something a little more on the realistic side, the kanji 大 "dai/tai" (big or large) is a character that's extremely common in Japanese names (especially for boys) if you want to incorporate that somehow. Like make their name "big container/holding/reservoir" or something.

The alternative is to make their name nonsense kanji and just make it a phonetic pun with an English phrase. I think there were a few characters in the guide that have names like that, but it could be a pun like "Maji Sachie" (though Sachie is a girl's name) for "Magic Satchel". Or you could make their name a more subtle pun like calling them "Poke Daime" so that when people call them politely in Japanese they say "Daime-san" or "Daime-chan" which sounds like "Dimension". Of course, these names in western format make it harder to spot the pun, but that kind of makes it more fun too.

hi! i’m trying to come up with a good surname for a bnha OC, who’s quirk essentially allows them to be physically empowered when in the presence of strong emotions! i was having a hard time deciding.. do either “心地 Kokochi/Shinji” or “心中 Shinjuu/Shinchuu/Shinaka” work? im having a hard time with the grammatical stuff :’)

I'd recommend the first one, mostly because if you look up the second one on Jisho (which I believe is one of my tips on the name guide, which I'm assuming you've seen since you sent an ask unrelated to the actual content of this blog) it has some rather... negative connotations that would better be avoided. It's always a good idea to reverse-search your OC names to make sure what you chose means what you want it to mean. Whichever reading you want to use is completely up to your own preference of course. Names don't really have a "grammar" to them, though, so you really don't need to worry about such things.

Also, as a general reply to everyone else: the guide I wrote was so that people could use it to the fullest without having to ask me simple things like this, and yall don't need to come to me for confirmation on every little "which do you think is better" or "am I using this right" thing. My answer will always be "whichever you think sounds good". Like I said in my guide, the MHA names are almost purely puns/nonsense with only a vaguely similar structure to real Japanese names. There isn't a right or wrong way to go about them, and I'm not an authority on the matter either way.

That aside, I'm glad there are people out there who still find use for the guide, though that was not the purpose of this blog at all. So I look forward to seeing you in the archive someday, I wish you luck with creating your OC!
