“Motionless” - I felt the wind whipping across the fields to the tree-line where I stood, a ferocity of spring hit me and momentarily I was transported somewhere else. Longing for the ability to move freely, but knowing for now that I must remain motionless.

I made some brushes! These are all custom-made brushes that I made to paint "Awakening" (the painting on the preview there), they're all super-nice to use and achieve a painterly look with subtle hue shifts and variation in texture. They're for Photoshop but work really well in Procreate too - find them here!

Inspired by the snowdrops pushing up through the Wintery soil and the dead leaves left from Autumn, "Awakening" heralds the first signs of spring and the renewal to come. 🍃This one took a few interesting turns and I ended up learning a lot about my process and colour. I also tested out my the new brushes I made for Photoshop/Procreate. “Spring in the Underworld” -  I was playing around with the ideas of the softness and darkness contrast in my work and I realised that there was no better place to explore this than the myth of Persephone and Hades, the former of which particularly inhabits both qualities. ⁠

I sketched my thumbnail before reading up on the mythology proper and I was rather dismayed – and pleased – to find my interpretation turned it slightly on its head. I didn’t want to portray the abduction or Persephone sitting in Hades' lap. I wanted to show her worshipped in his own kingdom. Him falling on his knees before her as she tears into the pomegranates greedily, sitting upon her throne of gnarled dead trees, herself a contrast of life in a desolate place. ⁠ Patreon members will get a process video and look behind the scenes!

"Hesta's Garden" - Hesta is a witch that lives in a tiny cottage in a vast garden, she inherited her home from her grandmother who taught her everything she knew about magic. One way Hesta uses her magic is to grow gigantic, edible rhubarb that she sells, makes into puddings and flies around on in place of a broom. She lives with her cat Maurice who subsists largely on rhubarb crumbles and pies. ⁠

My paintings are normally on the darker side, so this was a nice breath of fresh air. Attempting something uplifting and whimsical after a difficult year was a good change of pace, but I think my heart lies with all things spooky and I'll be going back to that soon. I'm looking forward to it.⁠

Thank you to everyone who suggested a name, I whittled it down and finally settled on Hesta!⁠

The rewards for July will be out this week and will be featuring this painting. Thank you for bearing with me while I finished it up for you guys.  I hope you enjoy it!
