i literally haven't stopped talking about this and i appreciate it being put into words more eloquently than i could have
Can we talk really quick about how great The Spot's character design was in Across the Spider-Verse as he progressed throughout the movie, and how much posture played a role?
The animation team did a fantastic job of changing the same body type from awkward, gangly, and out of shape to intimidating, uncanny, and otherworldly, and a big portion of that was just a color swap and a change in posture.
I don't think it would have worked that well with a lot of other body types, and it's really a testament to their design choices and ability as artists.

so!
i was discussing pickles with my friends and what we could make taste like pickle juice. Rat said we couldn't make a house taste like pickles
but i said yes we can.
Tumblr media
this is 55 gallons of vinegar for 750 usd. easy peasy, add in your dill and allspice and boom, pickle juice- but how much will that cost?
Tumblr media
one package of Marshall's Creek Pickling Spices is 10.56 on amazon, and uses two tablespoons to a quart, itwill make 5 gallons of pickle juice. So we need 11 bags per drum, putting the cost of 55 gallons at $866.16
this info
Tumblr media
says that one drum of this pickle juice would paint any of these houses no problem, especially considering that an average house in the US is 2,261 square feet (as of 2020)
but why stop there?
why not make the white house taste like pickle juice?
It takes 570 gallons of paint to cover the outside of the white house.
If that barrel is 55 gallons, we need 11 barrels, times 866.16 is 9,527.75
let's add another 269.99 for a Harbor Freight Paint Applicator, cause we may as well go all out.
To paint the white house it would cost $9,797.74 in materials.

Isabela Madrigal, Heights and Vine Symbolism
Before “What Else Can I Do?”, Isabela repeatedly physically positioned higher than Mirabel. She appears on the landing when they’re preparing the birthday party in a dramatic entrance and later rolls her eyes at Mirabel’s claims of the cracks on the landing, while Mirabel is on the ground floor both instances. During the argument she stands tall over Mirabel, who she has dragged flat on the floor. Heck, her bed is even on a raised platform with stairs leading up to it.
Tumblr media
This shows the imbalance between them of others and especially Alma’s regard, apparent privilege and implicitly inherent worth. Everyone looks up to Isabela… and she looks down her nose at Mirabel. We sympathize more with Mirabel in these scenes, her feeling to herself and us not just a helpless victim of her sister’s pride, but more reasonable and, well, down-to-earth.
Flowering vine swings in particular symbolize this idea. Her bed as seen there is attached to vines strong enough to lift and swing it. Based on how she lowers it when Mirabel first enters her room, I infer she pulls it up into the enclosing curtains (said by the creative team to represent how she feels trapped) to retreat even further from the world when she’s upset, hiding her messy, ‘bad’ negative emotions out of anyone’s sight and earshot. Besides the bed being a big swing, she’s suspended high above everyone else in the “Did somebody say flowers?” moment; in “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” complete with a spotlight, her vision seemingly the sole desirable one foretelling happiness and prosperity; and in promotional art designed to effectively present her pre-story character, suggesting it’s in-universe a thing she does often and is known for. Her trademark as “Señorita Perfecta Isabela”.
Tumblr media
This demonstrates her skill, strength and precision with her gift, and does a lot to serve her perfect image - and Mirabel’s perception she’s spoiled and has had everything handed to her. It’s an efficient method of transportation that no ordinary person could use. A glamorous, elevated vehicle reserved for a specific individual and allowing them to sit connotes privilege and superiority, like litters. Her being seated, the vines descending from somewhere unseen rather than us watching her grow them from scratch, their smooth, fluid movements and her not visibly exerting herself in the slightest make her command look totally effortless. It’s easy to forget she’s controlling the vines at all instead of getting (more) cosmic help. And look at her gorgeous hair and dress as they swish and flow with the elegant motion! Look at the flowers she didn’t need to add, but did, because all that she touches is beautiful to behold! Lovely Isabela, an angel deigning to visit Earth from the heavens. Perfect Isabela, too good to take the stairs like a normal person. What a vain fucking showoff.
Tumblr media
In the early part of “WECID” when Mirabel isn’t actively listening to her, she uses vines again. Yet it feels different. She sits on another swing to travel to the location of the verse where she explicitly describes the monotony, oppressiveness and exhaustion of growing identical perfect flowers and always keeping up this shallow facade. “I grow rows and rows of roses/Fleur de mayo, by the mile/I make perfect, practiced poses” - oh. It does take effort. It takes energy and time and thought, enough to leave her drained of enthusiasm for life itself. She’s been silently giving her whole self away all these years. Furthering the revelation that using her gift is taxing, actually, she then manipulates the vines to swing her bed not ‘effortlessly’ through her magic but with her arms and weight. The movement is a defiant, forceful pull, as if straining against restraints or alternatively seizing her personal autonomy. The only time we’ve seen force anything like that from her before is…
Tumblr media
emphatically ripping a flower off her own vine while ranting about how the arranged proposal she was going to accept, her ultimate sacrifice in the name of her family, has been ruined.
Now you realize: to Mirabel, the vine swings’ symbolism is that Isabela is better than her. To Isabela, they’re puppet strings. She doesn’t look in control of them because she isn’t in control of her life, merely a pretty doll Alma moves around, forced to be passively pulled wherever the supposed needs of “the family” call her. A precarious position she must constantly work to keep her balance in, lest she unforgivably, irrevocably fall from grace. She literally uses vines as a barrier between her and Mirabel. To try to remove the ‘imperfection’ of Mirabel from her room. They are tools of division, restriction and imposing your will on someone else.
But during “What Else Can I Do?” she thinks of ascension and heights positively. She wants to “climb”, to “rise” right “through the roof, to the skies”, and reflects this with her rising on a growing palm tree and going up to the roof, jumping and riding plants higher than she’d ever been before. What changes?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Instead of hanging, she’s standing on her own two feet. On the foundations of her family home and plants she constructs for herself. When she does swing from vines henceforth, like leaping off the roof and later when racing to save the candle, she does it Tarzan-style, much more active and independent. She even rides on thicker, sturdier moving vines! Initially she leaves Mirabel behind to climb after her, Isabela caught up in the rush of discovering and experimenting with freedom of expression and Mirabel still seeing her as a means to the end of protecting the miracle and family (hey, like Alma does… it’s as if they’re foils or something!), but by the bridge they’re both on top of the palm tree.
They’re both on top of the palm tree because Isabela actively helps Mirabel up. She wants to share her real self with her, for her to be part of this. This is the moment when she directly addresses Mirabel and asks for her opinion and thoughts: doesn’t she want freedom and authenticity too? Mirabel is inspired to really listen to her sister, reevaluate her assumptions about her and process the new side of her she’s seeing. Her conclusion - “All I know are the blossoms you grow/But it’s awesome to see how you rise” - is that she likes, loves, outright admires the true Isabela and wants to understand her and see more of her, probably wishing they’d had this conversation sooner. She chooses to embrace and support her. Isabela even sinks to her knees and Mirabel in reponse sits down next to her so their standing height difference is totally eliminated.
Tumblr media
They finally see eye to eye. They rise together.
Tumblr media
After that, they stay on the same level throughout the rest of the song and movie.
Tumblr media
The toxic imbalances of power and autonomy are gone. They’re equals and respect each other accordingly. At the end of the song, Isabela lets herself fall into a cushioning pile of her new, vibrant flowers, safe in the knowledge she can catch herself.

Happy birthday Mirabel!!!
in honor of her sixteenth birthday, here's what I think she would get from everybody this year
Abuela: A new, state of the art sewing machine
Felix: Felix baked her cake this year. She helped him decorate the chocolate frosting with designs like on her dress
Julieta: A feast
Pepa: Mirabel took a nap with Pepa and Antonio in a tent in his room, where it rained peacefully around them and it wa super cozy
Bruno: Bruno didn't know what to make Mirabel, so he put on a show with the rats and Antonio's help, telling the story of Encanto
Agustin: Agustin gave her a really big tight hug, and that was all she needed from him
Isabela: Isabela felt a bit awkward interacting with her sister this year, but Mirabel found quite a few vases of flowers and colorful plants around the house
Dolores: Dolores and Mirabel have a birthday tradition of picnicking together. This year Mariano joined them and they got to know each other
Luisa: Luisa and Mirabel made a zip line this year, and gave Julieta a heart attack
Camilo: He was the one to wake her up in the morning, sitting on top of her as her, and braiding her hair.
Mirabel: You best believe she made a gorgeous outfit to celebrate
Antonio: He helped with Pepa and Bruno's gifts, but he also gave Mirabel a kitten
Casita decorated the whole house in her colors, and the front door glowed all day

Interesting! You learn something new every day, thank you for teaching me!
Don't think about Dolores
Don't think about her being so overwhelmed as her gift settled in
Don't think about Abuela making her fight through it, to be friendly and sociable and show off her new talent
Don't think about the restless nights for months after as any sound in the house woke her
Don't think about her resenting her baby brother for crying so. so. much.
Just think about her slowly adjusting, learning to focus and block things out as she grows
Think about her finding escape in the mountains around Encanto
Think about her finally being able to control what she hears, think about her face lighting up every time she hears her name somewhere in the village
Think about her sending messages for her family, and making up secret codes for herself just because
Think about her learning to read and appreciate poetry. Think about her writing some, using a Lot of onomatopoeia
Think about her on the roof of Casita, listening to the stars, when her power focuses in on poetry down in the village
Think about her falling instantly in love
Think about her in the square all day for weeks, listening for the voice that had whispered the words to himself in the dark
Think about her embarrassed blush and nervous stutters when she properly meets him
Don't think about the rage and tears that come when she finds out he's to be married to Senorita Perfecta Isabela.
Just think about her finally getting him. Think about her telling him to slow down, because she deserves to be wooed and courted before being married
Think about the ceremony being so effortlessly perfect. Isabela was more than happy to decorate. Think about the feast and the ban on applause. Think about Antonio passing out tiny bells to each guest instead
Think about the wedding being under tents. Think about Pepa being so careful only to make it rain outside said tents, not inside
Think about Abuela just sitting back and watching this time. Think about how it all goes much better without the added stress
Think about Felix walking her down the aisle. Think about Agustin and Bruno and Camilo as best men. Think about Luisa and Mirabel and Isabela as her bridesmaids. Think about her perfect day.

Antonio and his naps
It's confirmed that Antonio does snore in his sleep isn't that the cutest thing agdhjwjdja
His favorite nap buddies!
1. Felix. Warm soft still comfy. perfect. 10/10
2. Luisa. big cuddly comfortable, only problem is she can't stay long. 9/10
3. Pepa. been sleeping on her since forever, but she likes to read and then get sad and then wakes him up with rain. 9/10
4. Julieta. An excellent nap partner, extremely warm, never naps with an empty stomach. 9/10
5. Mirabel. Can cuddle with her but not lay on her (anymore). they used to take naps every day together. 8/10
6. Camilo. Camilo is awesome at cuddles and his poncho makes Antonio feel safe, but sometimes he'll shapeshift while he's asleep and that wakes antonio up. 7/10
7. Abuela. They nap in the same room often, or she'll be in her chair and he'll sleep on top of her. it just gets harder for her as he gets bigger. 6/10
8. isabela. she has a great room for naps, but it's not always antonio's style. she likes napping in the sun, he likes a dark room and rain ambiance. sweet but not super compatible, 6/10
9. Bruno. he needs to make up for lost time, but he's strong and stays very still under antonio while he sleeps. 6/10
10. Dolores. He loves cuddles with her but he can't sleep with her, shes too jumpy and it startles him, or he'll snore and wake her up. 4/10
11. agustin. nothing against his tio, he just doesn't have a napping relationship with him. as a baby though agustin was sometimes the only one who could get antonio to fall asleep. 4/10

Mirabel: Hey, do we have any milk left?
Camilo: Oh, I drank the last of it.
Mirabel:
Camilo:
Mirabel: Foolish of you to think you can keep on containing my power. You'll pay dearly for your milk-stealing crimes soon enough.
Camilo: And who's going to stop me? You and your bones lacking calcium? The milk police?? God??? I have to laugh.

My Headcanons after watching Encanto:
Pepa had Antonio at age 45, so I imagine Antonio was a surprise baby, but a welcome one. He gave Mirabel company after so long alone in the nursery, and Abuela sees him as new hope for the miracle.
A few of the times Felix thought Camilo was sneaking seconds, it was actually Dolores taking an extra helping to leave out somewhere for Bruno.
Camilo used to follow Bruno around as a toddler, and sometimes ride on his shoulders. That’s why Camilo has memories of him as big.
Now, Antonio can often be found tailing Bruno and his rats around the Casita. Antonio has decided he really likes Tio Bruno, and though Bruno already understood his rats in his own way, he still likes hearing Antonio’s translations.
Mirabel was Bruno’s favourite niece, even before he disappeared. She reminded him the most of Julieta, who was his favourite sister.
Antonio’s animals often wander into Isabela’s room. She doesn’t mind, and has even grown a few fruit trees to offer treats from when they visit.
Mirabel implements strict ‘Office Hours’ for Luisa. Outside of those hours, she is only to be called on in a genuine emergency.
Antonio has started accompanying Luisa when she works with the donkeys, so he can ask them to do things and ease Luisa’s workload. He is quickly becoming her favourite cousin.
