Chapter 10: What the Past Can Teach Us

Story Summary: Ozpin works tirelessly in his pursuit: to make Beacon of Hope a safe place for kids to grow up. With a bigger location and more kids to take care of, Ozpin starts to feel the weight of responsibility crushing him, and he plans to carry the whole thing himself.

For Qrow, volunteering for Beacon of Hope had only one purpose: to get Summer off his back for a little while. When he meets the polite, friendly, and handsome man in charge, he wonders if he could actually get something out of this whole ordeal after all.

With Qrow’s support, maybe Oz will be able to reach his goal of turning this house into a home.

OMGGGGG THIS SOUNDS SO INTERESTING. I love that you came up with non-profit ideas that fit everyone's characters so well and I love cute Ozqrow, I'm obsessed!!!!!!

I'll share a bit about my AU, too 🙈

I refer to it as my Halfway House AU. The idea is that Beacon is a non-profit meant to house kids with no home, run by Ozpin.

His core staff members are Pyrrha and Jaune (who end up together), but the staff grows as time goes on.

Qrow is a dedicated volunteer who spends a lot of his time there because he loves kids and really likes what Beacon does (and also he wants to flirt with the handsome man in charge when he can).

Beacon takes care of a bunch of canon characters, including Oscar, Blake, Mercury, Cinder, Weiss, Whitley, Ren, and Nora. Most of the kids are aged down a bit. They are all residence at the same time and become very close friends :)

I actually just finished writing Ch. 20 this morning, but I posted Ch. 10 of my long fic for this AU yesterday 🙈 it's called Home is Where Your Light Shines Brightest (which is Beacon's vision statement in the AU XD)

Muffled screaming. Everyone has it backwards

Oz is Darkness and Salem is Light.

Something something destruction is just the cycle of life. It's to clear out the old and replace it with the new. It's to learn and live and die and be reborn. Oz is Darkness, because he lives and he dies and he is reborn. He tears down the old (abolishing monarchies and militaries) and replaces it with what's new (the Academies, a council). He is demonized every time he does his best to help. He believes humanity shouldn't be punished for his mistakes. He offers choice and even knowledge (but not always; but choice is one thing he values above all else). He offers magic as a gift and a tool to use. He learns and grows from his mistakes. He's willing to concede and admit when he's done wrong.

Salem is Light. She is unchanging, undying. She does not age. She believes humanity is lost without Gods, that humanity, while strong, is a fraction of what it once was. She brings life (creating and modifying Grimm). She heals those who need it (Cinders arm, telling Watts to give Tyrian a new tail). But she's stubborn. She's cruel and terrifies people. She manipulates when deemed necessary. She wants to create a new world, one where she's the sole goddess. She hates Oz's gifts to humanity (possibly aura/semblances if my theory is right). She encroaches on Oz's territory and terrorizes those who side with him, and even those who aren't affiliated with him. She's petty and angry and a hypocrite.

I just. Sits down. They're Darkness and Light. They do hold qualities of the other (Salem is Grimm and destructive, Oz is Light and creates things), but it's like how Darkness can create life and Light can destroy.

Guess now would be a good time to share my answers, too XD. Anyone who's followed me for more than a year is probably not going to be surprised, but my favorite is 100% my Halfway House AU.

It's an AU where I turned Beacon into a non-profit organization run by Ozpin where he takes in kids who don't have a home.

He ends up adopting Oscar while trying to find the other kids safe places to live. That includes Blake, Mercury, Weiss, Whitley, Cinder, Emerald, Ren, and Nora. They are all aged down pretty much except for Blake.

It features Ozqrow as the main focus (because I'm predictable), Bumbly as the secondary ship, and a few background ships here and there, like Arkos and PolySTR.

I also have a whole ask blog for it where you can interact with the characters, @ozpins-halfway-house, and I've been working on a comprehensive long fic for it for almost two years 🙈 I just posted Ch. 10 yesterday! I'll leave the link here if anyone wants to check it out.

I've put a lot of thought into it and had a ton of help from friends and others developing all the ideas, and I just love it so much. It's self indulgent as hell and made especially for me :)

Thank you for checking out the blog, here’s some stuff you need to know:

This takes place right after the events of canon, so after Salem is defeated and whatnot :)

Ozpin & Oscar started becoming self aware after they got shot by Ironwood in volume 7

Ruby, Raven, and Qrow also become self aware later on

Basically anyone with magic is capable of knowing that “hey yeah we aren’t real lol.”

You, the anons and askers, are seen by those who are self aware. You are seen as silhouettes with white irisless eyes and various features. Your features are unique to you, so feel free to explain your appearance with your first ask :)

The duo WILL be freaked out in the beginning, as you all have only been observers who are unresponsive up until now. Simply silhouettes who watch. But now, you are able to talk and communicate with the two (thanks to a force unknown to the duo, cough cough, me 👀).

Yes Salem was self aware too :)

You know what I just realized Oscar was implying when Jaune asked if they would make it?

Oscar: Around that campfire, did it matter?

Jaune: No, no. I guess it didn’t.

Oscar mainly said that to make Jaune feel better but there’s also an underlying implication, he’s also saying that about himself, implying that he’s possibly come to accept that even if he doesn’t make it, that having been around everyone, his friends, making memories with them, (his own campfires, if you will) it doesn’t matter to him, because at the end of the day; he was apart of their lives and they were apart of his and nothing else matters.

It’s a beautiful sentiment that I’m sure Oz also sadly came to the same conclusion himself.
