Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) “The Gleaners” (1857) Oil on canvas Realism Located in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, France
Millet’s depiction of three hunched, female paupers segregated from the laborers and the abundant crop in the distance demonstrates his attention to the plight of the poorest members of the community. And in 1857, with the French Revolution of 1848 still fresh in the minds of the French upper class, the painting was not well received.
