So I've watched Cuties
And while I don't think I will rewatch it, I found it absolutely worthy of the watch. It's an extremely well-executed movie that made me engage deeply with it and had some highly emotional moments. It was also much darker than I had anticipated.
A couple of things in no special order:
Cuties is not about the empowerment of girls via twerking. In its core it's about a young girl being torn apart by a world that forces her to grow up too soon - something most people can probably relate to. Both at school, where she and her friends try to deal with the pressure of sexualizing themselves long before they'r ready bc that's the message the world sends them, and at home, where her mother's grief forces her to leave her childhood bubble sooner than she is ready to.
The main conflict does not come from a oppressed muslim girl discovers twerking and becomes happy narrative, it's Amy's escalating escape attempts from the pain and the helplessness she experiences from her mother's problems. She witnesses firsthand how her mother battles her own pain when her father takes a second wife. I don't know about you guys, but to me nothing was as paralysing, as fear inducing in my childhood as watching my mother cry. There is a primal fear associated with watching the person who is supposed to take care of you fall apart and become vulnerable. I felt strongly reminded of that in the movie. Everything Amy does, each more and more extreme step she takes, is basically an attempt to deal with that issue. The conflict resolution comes not when Amy stands on stage and wins a contest, but when she runs home, confronts her mother, and her mother listens to her and responds to her, opening a way to a better understanding between the two.
The movie doesn't sexualize the girls, the girls try to sexualize themselves and fail, that’s the whole point. It's meant to be raw and terrifying to watch and it is. There are so many moments when I was so worried for the girls. Now, this movie is French and I'm German, so I grew up with a different cultural approach than US Americans towards creative boundaries, one that allows for a much more honest depiction of difficult material. Many non-US approaches (and that's by far not limited to European ones) understand that art is supposed to show all the sides of humanity, including the darkest, most horrible ones, and places much more responsibility on the audience to make necessary connections themselves and to apply sensible critical thought to what they are watching. If your knee-jerk reaction as an US-American is to say that your way is better, then I consider that a you problem, not a me problem. Don't expect the rest of the world to cater to US-American whims.
If you feel like the girls in the movies were too sexual, then that is something you should reflect on wrt yourself. Also, you're literally parrotting the worst US republican senators like ted cruz and trump jr., so congrats.
The director, Maïmouna Doucouré, is a muslim, Senegalese French woman who spent over a year researching social media interactions of young girls in order to make this movie. She has worked together with a child psychiatrist and the parents of the actors were all aware of what was going on and supporting her. She had an intention behind the movie and she managed to execute that intention extremely well. She did not fail to deliver, just because people who haven't watched the movie or who have watched it with the intention  to hate it failed to apply basic media analysis to it. Also, I have seen accusations of racism and islamophobia levelled towards the movie. Maybe consider who made it before putting your foot in your mouth (then again, I have seen a post saying it doesn't matter that she's black and muslim, so maybe you just like to spew right-wing rethoric after all)
You don't have to believe me, but I'd recommend listening to this very cool youtuber giving a poignant analysis.

In Star Trek TOS, s1 ep24 where the planet fights its wars digitally and then kills its citizens, Spock sees a small chamber with one door and goes, "an entrance, but not an exit. They go in but never come out." and, yeah, he was right, they got disintegrated in that chamber, but also, has he never before seen an elevator??

threatening your spouse with divorce over minor inconveniences such as farting or leaving a plate around when they're in on the joke is pretty funny actually, but you know what's even funnier? Threatening with divorce AND to take their parents in the divorce. You get new parents and they end up an orphan. Checkmate.

how is it that everybody who gives Manner of Death a poor rating on Mydramalist lists the fact that the women (Jane, Rung, Nam) carry most of the plot as a negative when imho it's one of the coolest things about MoD?

It’s The Mermaid, a Chinese movie from 2016 and the whole movie is as funny as this scene!
I just watched it and it’s got great execution, every scene is memorable, and the characters are funny as hell.
You have a mermaid

an octopus who is not into vore
Tumblr media
dude who gets poisoned, receives the antidote, and immediately drinks the rest of the poison

dude who changes his mind every .5 seconds (and that’s a fake moustache)

Me, complaining about how long it takes to draw comics and how I want to start a webcomic but it’s going to take so much time
The waifu: “Hire an artist then.”
Me: “Ideally I should make some money before I have to spend money on someone for something I’m not sure is ever going to pay off.”
Me: “It’s not like I could just go and post an ad ‘Artist wanted, works for exposure’.”

I’ve decided I suck at drawing and need to practice and so this happened and now I don’t even want to look at it anymore, ugh!
Anyway, it’s supposed to be Wei Wuxian.
I’ll go... practice some more...

Wei Wuxian returns to life after 16 years and the first thing he and Lan Wangji do is adopt a gaggle of teenager. Meanwhile the teenagers are just like "Yep, those two are our new dads."

Sure, Wen Ning showing up whenever Wei Wuxian needs him is pretty cool, but can we talk about Lan Wangji showing up the moment he senses Wei Wuxian is in any kind of danger and just immediately attacking everyone and everything that might be threatening his boyfriend?

Drunken Lan Wangji immediately looking for something to give to Wei Wuxian even if the first thing he finds are two roosters and then just being like "They're for you" and then proceeding to tell Wei that he regrets not rebelling againsth is clan to stand with Wei since the beginning and THEN waking up the next morning and for a horrible moment being scared that he actually confessed his love for Wei Wuxian while drunk only to find out that he only confessed his love for bunnies it's like
The show didn't have to smack me down so hard, but it did and I will watch it at least ten more times.

OP's entire rant sounds like they're just looking for excuses to complain about the fact that people post smut on AO3 which is like... one of the best features of AO3 imho...?
It’s so fucking infuriatingly frustrating that so many of ao3′s userbase is so adamant that ao3 is nonprofit even though it’s owned by a corporation so that shit is a fucking lie in of itself, like. They invest in stocks and constantly people try and push this stupid as fuck idea that there’s no ads!! :)) it’s free!! when it’s been in beta for literal fucking years with one of the worst filtration and blocking systems I’ve seen to date and rampant disgusting nsfw that’s unregulated and crops up to previews for themes anyways so why do we constantly have to have mile long posts defending such a fundamentally bad website from it’s core instead of actually thinking critically for once I fucking hate all of you.

But I’ll try to be around here more often.

the only believable explanation why star wars didn't make either finnpoe or finnrey canon is that star wars is traditionally built upon unhealthy as fuck relationship dynamics and both finnpoe and finnrey would have been too healthy to uphold that tradition.
which brings me to my next point. huxpoe should have been canon,
