Hi! I learned some mandarin back in high school but lost a lot of it over the years. I want to start immersing myself again but I can’t find a lot to keep my attention on Netflix (there are some great shows but they use a lot of specific jargon, like crime procedural stuff) do you have any suggestions on what shows to watch/where to find good shows to watch? I appreciate it very much xx
你好!!
I have a tough time finding stuff on Netflix too. I would definitely say to use Kissasian (they have a great selection of Chinese and Taiwanese shows). To avoid jargon and difficult language, I would definitely suggest kids shows but sometimes that can get a little tedious :/ a lot of kids chinese cartoons can be found on YouTube.
As for suggestions, it depends on what you like. It also depends on whether your okay learning Taiwanese Mandarin over Chinese. Personally, I am a huge romance fan, and I don’t care for mainland China shows.
My go-to shows that are on Netflix are Two Father’s and Triad Princess.
HIStory 3: Trapped and HIStory 3: Make our days count (both gay and so SO good-find on Kissasian).
Prince of Wolf (Kissasian)
Did you go to school? (Kissasian)
An innocent mistake (Kissasian)
Boysitter (Kissasian - haven’t seen it yet but it’s on my infinitely long watch list😅)
Drunken to Love you
The Fearless (amazing~ definitely a favorite)
So I don’t have any suggestions for children’s shows but I know that for a lot of them on Netflix, you can change the audio to Mandarin😊
A show with relatable queer characters, chaotic yet supportive friendships, healthy relationships built on quiet intimacy, and 30-year-old mind-reading virgins??? Fucking five-star michelin.
什么时候你说中文在北京 *roughly* Shénme shíhòu nǐ shuō zhōngwén zài běijīng When you speak Chinese in Beijing Usually means : “when do you speak Chinese in Beijing?” But for the sake of the meme...
This joke is particularly funny because a Beijing accent sticks these retroflexes everywhere. 儿 is everywhere when they speak
An English one for y’all to enjoy cuz I’m good like that.
Stating this once and only once for the people in the back : we take no credit for any of the memes unless our watermark is placed at the bottom. Those without watermarks belong to their respective owners and I’m too fucking lazy to look up and credit every meme maker but we thank them for their service anyway.
I just started learning Chinese but I don't know where to start. I've learned tones and pinyin, but should I study radicals? My main source of study is hello chinese, but are there other things I should be doing outside if the app?
你好!A great way to start is by immersing yourself into the language. Music, movies, tv shows in Chinese/Mandarin are all great things to look at. The more you enjoy something, the easier it is to learn. Definitely study radicals first. I have a post dedicated just to that with links on where to study them more in depth ✨link below✨
I’ve never used Hello Chinese before, but I do have a list of other apps and websites that are great resources. Personally my favorite is always Duolingo tho :)
here's a fun way to learn some new things, through a douyin (China's tiktok). this one in particular was especially popular during the new year. also it's very 洗脑了 catchy, so you've been warned.
